String Instrument

Any TAs out there that play stringed instruments? What insturment? How many years of study? What are you currently working on?

For me, I have been playing the Double Bass for about six years. I am currently working on Konzert in E Dur by Karl Dittersdorf, Sonata in G minor by Henry Eccles, and various other college audition pieces.

I'm working on Bach's Suite No. 2 in B minor. That is a fun one! Especially the Badinerie portion at the end.

Actually, I played through that one a few times today.

Violin. Playing for 15 years. Working on all sorts of things but mainly Lalo - Symphonie Espagnole. I've also played some Mendelssohn concerto in E minor on the side.

Don't feel to bad when you suck horribly when you first pick it up. Just remember: perfect practice makes perfect.

ok, cool

yeah i used to play piano i ended up skipping step 2 and 3 and did grades 1,2 and 3. Then I stuffed up on my grade 3 exam and decided to stop playing. dont know about a guitar though... cant seem to hold those damn things properly

Sometimes I use some old shoelaces and string them between two cans.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've been playing violin for 7 years now. I'm not a virtuoso for anything but now that I'm getting more serious about playing I've gotten much better. It sounds corny and I didn't use to believe it, but it really is true that you can't force the music. I've learned in the past year that you just have to play from the heart and its so much better and more fulfilling to play when you do.
Some pretty sounds come out when I'm "emotional"...yeah okay, I;m gonna shut up now.

Pieces working on...

Tchaikovsky- serenade for strings - pezzo in forma sonatina + walzer

it's alright, but I really need some new music

*oh yeah, and getting a new violin in Poland kinda helped when I got rid of my shitty one*

I absolutely love Tchaikovsky! His piano pieces, to me, are ranked up there with Chopin. I especially love the Finale to Symphony #4.

I need to get a new bass and bow soon before college auditions . I just don't have $15,000 to spare at the moment

You might want to take a look at some music by Mark O'Conner.

He, Yo-Yo Ma, and Edgar Meyer compiled a CD called Appalachia Waltz. It is like contemporary appalachian music.

Lots of violin shops will lend you a fine bow for a week or two so you can play on it before deciding whether to buy it or not. (audition week)

string instruments are for queers

Huh, I never thought of that. None-the-less, I still need my own decent bow.
