I've gotten into his stuff more and more over the last few days playing castle wolfenstein at the same time (the Richard D james album)

he has inspired me to start making music again.

Drukqs is one of my absolute favorite albums. Selected Ambient Works 85-92, Richard D. James Album, and I Care Because You Do are all pretty good.

Posted by meneedit on Jun-21-2004 03:38:

what about selected ambient works vol.II?

That one -- SAWII -- is really minimal. Hailed as a masterwork but not my kind of thing when it comes to ambient -- it's definitely a solid collection of some very synaesthesic, synthethic, ominous atmospheres.

I have favorite Aphex tracks... albums on the whole I don't jive with, personally, but here are some of my faves:

-Girl/Boy Song
-Flim
-ICCT Hedral
-Heliosphan
-Nannou

I tend to like the RDJ music which has catchy melodies juxtaposed with something odd and alien, like stuttering beats or crafty use of samples. I didn't like most of Drukqs because the beat programming on the over-the-top tracks (which are also very hard to spell!) is skillful but the music didn't end up resonating with me after repeated listens. Something like "Girl/Boy Song", on the other hand, took on that drill-n-bass weirdness early on but attached a suprisingly hummable tune too!

I was reading some classic Aphex interviews lately. He is truly a genius.

RDJ album is very good as well as some tracks on I Care Because You Do. Havent really listened to many tracks from either Selected Ambient Works though.

Come To Daddy is definately one to start out with, then the RDJ album. It depends on what you're going for, the Ambient RDJ, or the more experimental RDJ. SAW1 is a really good comp of RDJ's Ambient side.

26 Mixes For Cash is also something to look into. Disc 1 is a more laid-back, almost chill-out disc, whereas Disc 2 goes into the harder Aphex material.

I hear that RDJ has a new album coming out this year. Has there been any new info released on it?

ummm, come to daddy isnt on CD

Posted by Dojomaster26 on Jun-22-2004 16:32:

Yes, it's on CD. You can order it from the Warp Records' website, and I can get a copy on CD from my local Media Play.

Whatever the format, it's still a great EP.

Richard D James album is one of the best.

The first song is arguably my favorite song of all time.

Aphex Twin - 4
