Sasha is no longer spining Prog or using vinyl!

This thread is dedicated to none other than Richard Raiban I got this out of the NYC Forum:

DJ Sasha dismissed reports on the web this week that he been angry when a record he ripped off the decks struck a girl in the face, telling Skrufff that hed actually been larking around, when a dirty record got stuck in its groove.

I was two thirds into my set, the place was going off and I was enjoying myself when the record started jumping, said Sasha.

By the third time it happened, the whole crowd was cheering and I ripped it off and threw it up in the air in an overly theatrical way, certainly not in frustration. I was just being a bit silly and theatrical and I guess the record boomeranged onto something and hit this poor girl on the head.

The incident happened at Cardiffs Time Flies event, and effectively finished the party there and then, though Sasha was also keen to refute allegations that hed been subsequently manhandled from the decks by bouncers.

Her boyfriend grabbed hold of me, thinking that Id thrown a glass at her or something and took me backstage and I went into this room with him to see this poor girl there with blood all over her face, he continued.

After Id seen that I was freaked out, I didnt know how the girl was and I didnt want her to think I didnt give a fuck (care-slang ed), by going back on and playing. I was flipped out by the whole thing.

Sasha said hes since been in contact with the girl whos now fully recovered and will be entertaining her and her boyfriend at his next Fabric gig in July. Coincidentally hell also have ditched using vinyl altogether by then as well as much of the music he used to play, he said.

In about three weeks time Im ditching vinyl and CDs to go out on the road using my computer and thats going to allow me to mix anything with everything, said Sasha.

Im now actively distancing myself from that progressive sound that was previously attached to me, because it really doesnt hold much interest for me anymore, he revealed.

I think its time to move on, maybe Im looking back to 85 instead of 95. He added.

If any of you actually follow Sasha's works you'd know that he hasn't spun progressive house for 11 years. His music is always evolving, which is why he's been around for so long. Most artists and djs are too linear to do what he's done. He said in another interview (or maybe it was part of this article but was cut out) that Involver was his new "experiment". If I'm not mistaken Sasha used Ableton Live (yes the very same program BT uses for his laptop symphony) to do much of the mixing and reworking for Involver.

Im not sure what he means by "Im looking back to 85 instead of 95" (maybe synthpop! ) but I can only imagine that whatever he moves on to will be gold!

It's a shame some people are not as open-minded towards music as they think they are.

In either case, Sasha has been my fav DJ since I started *really* listening to EDM and no matter what style he chooses next he'll still be my fav. If his future doesn't proove to be successful, it doesn't change what he's done in the past.

p.s. quite personally i don't think he'll stray too far from prog house

hmmmmm

^^ could've been a little more elaborative.

Back in the early to mid 90's his sets were different from what most people remember hearing from sasha. Then he spun trance, then prog house (then he made ADD which is still my fav artist album) and I believe Involver is his next step.

Even his style in prog house has changed over the years. As Mecha has pointed out many times he used to spin lots of unknown tracks but recently has been spinning more popular prog tracks.

(I probably missed something inbetween)

I just don't think he'll change his style so drastically (like going from prog to nu skool breaks or anything) because even with his changing styles over the years they all have similarities.

anyways there are 3 other threads on the board regarding the exact same article

ahhh, now i understand

Posted by DigitalMP on Jun-21-2004 16:24:

I'll speak for Richard Raiban, since he's probably still weeping in a dark corner, as I've gathered from Karen's smoke signals off the roof of their building, that I can see all the way in Buffalo.

Sasha IS progressive house, and he'll continue to pioneer that genre for years to come. Yes, he has been spinning some popular trakcs as of late, but, as the first 3/4 of Involver shows, he's still running the show and taking it in new and exciting directions.

agreed.

and regarding the other half of the article, I believe Sasha will be using Ableton Live (like BT) for his sets. Should be interessting. Normally I'd say stick to vinyl and a little CDR but I think Sasha has already prooved his beatmatching and mixing talents so I think this is a good move for Sasha

Posted by DigDeep on Jun-21-2004 18:50:

I highly doubt Sasha will be ditching prog completely. How could he when everything hes been associated with has been progressive based!?!? The vinyl thing i believe, since there are a lot of dj's that feel this way. And i dont think he used a single vinyl at Labour of Love last year either.

You can sense the denial already

Oh yeah... death to prog

Posted by BTG on Jun-21-2004 19:36:

whats so bad about prog? why does everyone hate it? its so damn good!

Posted by malek on Jun-21-2004 20:02:

Progressive is where's it at!

I can't believe that Sasha will stop mixing a genre that he helped so much bring forward.

What will this guy spin? techno? epic trance ???

Posted by Pett on Jun-21-2004 20:06:

I saw sasha in barcelona last week and he still spins boring prog and still loses the crowd in the first 15 minutes..fear not prog fans.

Posted by Jayx1 on Jun-21-2004 20:21:

Going back to 85? Could we see a return of acid and vocal styles of house in a modern context?

WOOOOHOO!

It always comes back to house!
