I'll say

France 2 - Greece 1
England 1 - Portugal 2 (Rooney is gonna be marked by 2 at all times, and if Owen plays like he has been playing.. no goals for the English)

France 4 - Greece 2
England 9 - Portugal 1

bias meter:

portugal [.....|....X] england

If France thinks Greece is going to be an easy ride than they have something else coming. I haven't been too impressed by France as of late but they will take this I should expect.

Portugal is gaining momentum but England have been quite consistent and its payback for Euro 2000. This should prove to be the game of the tournament so far. Can't say for this. Perhaps a draw at full time. Anything is possible after that.

yes, because our midfield never score any goals, *cough* 4 goals from midfield in 3 games *cough*
What about Pauleta? he's done literally nothing so far, and the rest of the Portuguese team, on the evidence against Spain, are interested in beating a few players then crossing in to an empty (of their 'attackers') box. Their attacking threat seems really tame to me, it took a shot from nothing, albeit a good one, to score against Spain despite getting up to their penalty area for most of the match!
Add to this the fact that Sol Campbell & Terry are going to prove more difficult to beat than whichever old boys were in the Spanish defense, and you've got a clean sheet heading England's way.

i think that'd be brilliant if that happened. owen will score sooner or later he is still a class striker and if he has space he will score and then like sector.30 said, we have plenty of attacking midfielders.i think if england play well they will win but im not sure they can keep a good momentum going for 4 games therefore it will hinge on how well portugal play.

Posted by evil_bastard on Jun-22-2004 01:23:

Portugal can't afford to put 2 men on Rooney, England have 4 midfielders who can come forward and threaten goal, as well as Owen who is just lacking a bit of confidence.

if england plays with the same confidence and calamity james (the keeper) doesn't fuck up , they'll go easily to the semi-finals !!

GO ROONEY BADGER !!

weren't you an england hater not too long ago?

Seriously though, it seems that a lot of "football fans" like to mix football with politics. "Oh I hate Blair's politics so I hate Beckham's guts". This is the rationale of a lot of my Arab friends which is, if you ask me, complete and utter bullspit.

"Oh no, France colonized us a long time ago. How can we support them?" boo fucking hoo.

The beauty of the game is that it transcends races, creeds, and religions.

who said anything about politics??

i don't like the english team because of their stupid attitude, and frankly because they don't play as team.

Politics always has a little bit to do with it...let's be realistic. Same reason I never cheer for the Yanks or the Germans at anything.

And what's wrong with England's attitude? They seem to be clicking together to me. You must be thinking of Holland, whose players have blatantly refused to play certain positions.

France and Portugal will go through!
C'mon England sucked yesterday! Croatia was playing a terrible game but the still managed to score goals! I must admit that Rooney is absolutely stunning but ur not gonna reach the semy-finals with that kinda game

btw England never reaches the semi's (oh yeah Tim Henman does...)

Yeah cause England scoring as many goals in one match as portugal managed in the entire tournament so far is really sucky

Posted by Tim81 on Jun-22-2004 08:37:

What the hell is so special about Rooney?
I can't explain why he scores 4 goals already in the tournament... while the best attackers of the world: Vieri, Raul, Pauleta, Owen and Figo haven't even scored one goal! I don't think Rooney is a brilliant player....

Nice quarter final by the way: Portugal - England

Alright Portugal isn't playing very well either, but I think the way you guys talk about England is a bit over the top, they didn't play attracktive football and they have a weak defence!

They didn't play attractive football? Ok then, right. So England so far being the top scorers in the tournament with 8 goals, that isnt attacking is it? Or Rooney being top scorer? 4 goals? and this being his first championship? Naa course not, England are boring and defensive, oh wait, but we are shit at the back?

We expect allot from the boys because they are all good players. We don't play as a team? Did you see the boys holding arms around each others shoulders? I dont think you have any players picking the team like Holland does, or any disputes like Figo saying he don't like Deco, which he stated publicly!

We play the England way. We have been spot on in all 3 games tactically. We;ve been outdone 4 times from set pieces, and we need to work on that, but not been beaten any other way. France we nearly held out in the end, Switzerland only look dangerous at set pieces and crosses, which as said gotta work on it, and Croatia the same, and we sat back after going 2-1 up and hit them on the break. You gotta remember this was a make or break game for Croatia. They sent players up attacking in 7's and 8's. Rooney and Owen were then left with just 2 or 3 players to beat, hence how Rooney scored his 3rd goal.

BTW we do reach semis, Euro 96

Don't write England off against Portugal. They've been nothing but dissapointing so far, having lost against Greece, poor against Russia and it took them till they scored their goal about 60 mins gone against Spain to finally look decente. They're in a transitional period, kinda like Germany, so they arnt as strong as they were 4 years ago when Figo was at his Peak, just like Pauleta, Nuno Gomez etc..

I don't think Italy and The Netherlands will make it to the next round!!
