And yes, I've used the search, but I'm still pretty much a noob when it comes to all this production stuff. Just to be 100% clear, a midi controller basically just acts as a physical input to a digital synth (such as cubase), correct?

Anyways, if it matters, I'm running win2k pro (might get xp tho soon) and I'll probably be using it mostly with cubase, though if it can do other programs or other fancy things, thats definately a plus.

I'm using the Edirol PCR-30 and it's pretty cool. Cost me 125 of those lovely English pounds.

M-Audio Radium series. 49 key for $159, 61 key for $199. Basic MIDI controller, but a pretty decent piece of gear. Check musiciansfriend.com
