The Conet Project
Has anyone encountered this before? Freaky shortwave radio broadcasts that use short musical loops, number sequences and phoenetic alphabetics but their meaning is indecipherable. No-one knows who's broadcasting them or who they're being broadcasted to. They do sound pretty cool, though:

Whenever I listen to them I always imagine a lone radio, broadcasting them from some dark, dusty, abandoned (possibly haunted?) shed or something. They make for some addictive listening, but I wouldn't recommend listening to them before going to bed (I did that last night and my thinking was all out of whack - random tonal and number patterns reverberating through my head). I recommend the Swedish Rhapsody and Lincolnshire Poacher broadcasts from the first disc for sheer freakiness.

(Fwiw, this isn't some sort of X-Files, tin-foil hat conspiracy - you can actually listen in on these broadcasts if you're close enough and have the right equipment. Still, no-one's sure what they mean or what they're used for, so it's sure to get the conspiracy theorists going at some point. Personally, I just think they sound cool.

lol that was some freaky stuff

blah i seen freakier stuff than that. No way Italy have scored its 2-1, anyway...yeah.. i nodded my head to some of the stuff on there.
Yeah those are pretty weird. Some musical artists were actually influeneced by these "number" stations. Check out Boards of Canada - Gyroscope and Stereolab - Pause.
Yeah, it's cool stuff. When I was into electronics building and amateur radio about 10 years ago, I could pick up these stations late in the evening and just listen to some woman reading the same numbers sequence over and over. Very creepy.
As far as "conspiracy," I don't know if that's the right word. The best guess is that these are legitimate spying ops for many different nations.
Track 6, Disc 1, "The Lincolnshire Poacher" is my all time favorite.
Wow, I would never have expected a thread on this to feature on TA!
In all honesty I though it was a UK only phenomenon. Ive really wanted to tune into number stations for ages now, but I dont have the right radio setup to tune into them. Plus, Ive never noticed sight nor sound of them around my neck of the woods. Listening to online recordings hasnt got the same haunting atmosphere as listening to it though the radio.
cool music on track 6
wait, whats with the numbers, omg, wtf!
this shit is wierd.
Whoa. More links? :P

*Whimpers... *
I live by myself... and I listened to it, alone... before I went to sleep!
Does anyone want to sleep over?
No seriously....

ok, the very first one, The Conet Project - tcp d1 1 the swedish rhapsody irdial
at 3.08, wtf is she saying? it sounds like she keeps saying "Logan" which, creepily enough, at 2.35 AM, happens to be my first name. anyone know?
That's some freaky stuff...
Wonder why its illegal to listen in the UK?
Never again will i listen to that....

Err.. whys everyone shitting themselves over this? Its clearly just a way for spies to receive encrypted messages easily and anonymously. Whats the big deal?

Taken from another forum:
Ahh yes the Conet Project i too once thought it was freaky...until one day back when i used to phreak i came across an interesting article by the head phreaker himself Captain Crunch.. Now mind you this was back in 1989. I dont have any article to quote from so i will do it best to my memory. *Takes Deep Breaths* Phone systems world wide use 'Tandems' to link one network to another. For instance and i see this a lot at work. When getting a call transferred from India some times i'll hear Transfer tones sometimes i'll hear tones like that one with the czech lady. This is nothing more than to tell one phone system to the other where to route the call. So what you are listening to is phone lines TALKING to each _other_ *hows that for freaky *... the recorded voices with the numbers... is just the human form of translation so the phones can talk..while the tones you hear are the 'tandems' that LINK your call to the otherside. What YOU are hearing is a myriad of TEST sequences done WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY back and continue to do today as they update tandems, switches, and routers globally.
