Google Email (gmail)

Well, I just got a gmail(google) e-mail account.

I'm sure most of you heard about it. They offer 1GB of storage. The service should be made available to everybody for free by the end of the year.

Anyways, IT'S ABSOLUTELY AMAZING !!!

Kicks hotmail's ass ! So much faster and easier to use than Hotmail. It is also much simpler and more intuitive.

I absolutely love it! Finally a great alternative to slow and buggy hotmail which offers only 2MB of storage(though MS plans to increase storage in July in response to Google's offering)

Since march?? Interesting. They've only publically announced it on April 1st.

I thought they were not accepting any new users.

^^ i think the way gmail's beta invite works is every time they want a new wave of beta users, they give out more invites to thier existing users to send to thier friends.

I've got a gmail account too - its some good shit. The speedy web interface with keyboard shortcuts really helps it out, by far the best web interface email ive used.

A few useful Windows programs if you're using gmail:

BTW Yahoo has recently responding to Gmail's service by increasing the space quota for its free accounts to 100 MB, and 2 GIGs for its paying customers. Crazy!

As far as I know every registered gmail user can send 3 invites to other people.

Google employees can set invites to unlimited number of people.

If you really want gmail account now, invitations are currently sold on ebay for about $10 USD (they are sold by people who have available invites, and not by Google). Surprisingly enough, many people buy invitations instead of waiting for a few months. I read a news story about some 20 year old dude who bought a bulk of invites for $300, and then resold those invites individually making more than $1000.

there is no such thing as a free lunch

google offers 1gb but it always reserves the right to scan your emails for keywords which it can sell to other companies...

Kickass, sounds like something i woulda done 5 years ago

Ilyia - Apparently the distribution of invitations to give out has become randomized. I know some people who've gotten a bunch and others who didn't receive any at all.

Gmail's fun and all, but Micro$oft has had me hooked on Hotmail for ages now, making me rather reluctant to switch over altogether. (Add to that the MSN Messenger factor. )

For now, though, my Gmail account just sits there to look pretty.

Please don't post misinformed statements such as this.

Google's software does scan e-mails, but it never sells anything to other companies. What they do is is display ads that are relevant to the content of the message. Your e-mail remains private and nobody else sees it except you.

What most people don't understand is that ALL e-mails are scanned by some kind of software - be it mail server, SPAM control software etc.
So if you are really concerned about privacy you shouldn't really be using e-mail at all, or you must encrypt all your messages.

As soon as one of my 3 gmail accounts gives me the opportunity for more invites I'll send you one. Let me know if you get one earlier though so I don't waste it.
