A shelf is pretty easy to make. I made a combo CD and DVD shelf. All I used was a crap load of 1x8 inch boards, some screws, and a little bit of wood glue (just to make sure the frame held). Oh yeah, and a saw, a cordless screwdriver, and some measuring tape.
Unless you're trying to get artsy with it, a shelf is basically just a bunch of right angles. as long as you make sure everything is the same length (for your shelves) it's just "glue and screw."
I hope that helps, if not, I apologize for wasting your time.

Shelves are easy to build.
Building a chair is a real bitch, easier to build a bench or something.

Database took more brains than brawn. Building houses takes brawn, but if you're the lead carpenter laying out the rooms, etc. according to the blueprint, you have to have some brains as well. Dabbled into architecture, you have to on additions, but I can tell you I've built some pretty shitty homes based on the blueprints. The more you build, the more you get a feel for things.
