Irony: Muslim Soldiers Fighting for France Graves Defaced With Swastikas

Now I'm no genious, but someone please explain the logic as to why a frenchman would deface the grave of a muslim soldier fighting for the French against the Nazis with swastikas. Assuming that they wanted French independance of course ...

But wouldn't a jewish star be more appropriate or something?

Muslim graves defaced in France

A total of 48 gravestones were vandalised
Vandals have daubed swastikas on the graves of Muslim soldiers in a military cemetery in Alsace, eastern France.
Seven gravestones were also smashed in the attack on the cemetery in Hagenau, north of Strasbourg.

The graves were those of Muslim soldiers who died fighting for France in the first and second world wars.

President Jacques Chirac condemned the attack, describing it as "an insult to the memory of the soldiers who gave their lives for our country."

Vandalism spree

Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin also denounced the graffiti, urging people to "rally against hatred."

The desecration of the Muslim graves is the latest in a string of similar incidents in the Alsace region.

About a dozen graffiti attacks have been reported in recent weeks, some aimed at Jewish and Christian sites.

Earlier this month, 60 graves in the Muslim section of a Strasbourg cemetery were defaced.

According to local Islamic leaders, there were seven such attacks on Muslim sites in April alone.

Dalil Boubakeur, leader of France's Council of the Muslim Faith, on Thursday urged the authorities to track down and punish the perpetrators.

He described the latest graffiti attacks as an "unbearable Islamophobic event."

Hitler did recruit Middle-Eastern armies in his quest to exterminate the Jews. I don't know if that's the reason for the swastikas though.

Pictures taken in 1943 of the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem Haj Amin el-Husseini reviewing Bosnian-Muslim troops - a unit of the "Hanjar (Saber) Division" of the Waffen SS which he personally recruited for Hitler.

mmmmmm, chaos. tastes like chicken!

Only thing I can think of is pro-nazi people put the marks there not to show that the Muslims were nazis but to show their nazi hatred for what the Muslims did in WWII...

There were quite a few that fought with Hitler though in WWII as well as defending France so its quite confusing but the best guess I can make. http://www.srpska-mreza.com/library/facts/hanjar.html

Perhaps its just children who don't know what they doing. You see that a lot here in the US where kids just deface gravestones and turn them over without thinking about it and rather because of being bored.

Heh yes but how many pro-Nazi frenchmen are there? You don't meet very many people who want their country invaded (not vichy frenchmen they're different ... they only surfaced after the invasion).

Posted by BadBadNeil on Jun-24-2004 21:22:

Yes true

However there are quite a few pro-nazi people here as well even though sometimes they are hard to find. Perhaps they sympathized with the Nazi doctrines and wished their country would be part of a Nazi European regime. Beats me though, im guessing way out there on this one!

he's right. it's not so much about the specific history, but the ideals, the movement.

When will folks wake up and realize that the war on terror is a war about religious beliefs? There is a radical right Muslim faction and that is the heart of terrorism. The French are communists with leftist views.

Ape is banned again anyway.

And I agree that organized religion is the root cause of most of the problems in the world today.

I like that smokeape. He has a point. The terrorists seems to be religious fanatics. Everything they do is for jihad or Holy War.

The nightly network news is fairly equitable - CBS, ABC, PBS, and NBC, however the cable news networks are pure drivel.

CBS News is a separate entity from Viacom (they are allowed free reign over the stories they air without Viacoms hegemony), so Id say they are probably the best.

They uncovered, among other muckraking stories, the Enron tapes after Ashcroft refused to release them, and also the torture pics.

As opposed to this guy?

http://www.capitolhillblue.com/cgi-...ive=20&num=2884

:P

I see little difference between some of these folks and Islamic Fundies:

quote:

Protesters burned copies of six Supreme Court decisions they said had dealt a setback to religion, including 1973's Roe vs. Wade, which legalized abortion, and the high court's decision earlier this year to strike down a Texas sodomy law.

They both share the common goal of controlling people's personal ideology and sexuality through repressive means.

I think the only link between this and the war on terror is that the war on terror has caused an increase in the levels of islamaphobia. And to say that the French are lefty commies is rediculous when Jean Marie LePen was so successful at their last elections. The far right in Europe is on the increase and, despite what Israelis and Americans may think, they are not like the old Nazis that mainly targeted the Jews, they are now mainly and anti-Muslim group of people. I think in the 19303/40s they were anti Jew cos that was the biggest ethnic minority, now it is Muslims they are against them...(as well as any other "foreign" minority)

religion is a belief. u want to abolish groups who believe and practice what they believe? u have a religion yourself. there is no such thing as no religion. unless u dont believe in anything, and just sit there with opinions whatsoever.

and what do you mean by "groups". the abolishment of religions centralised hierarchy will benefit humankind insurmountably, but if christians want to sit in a circle and worship a cross and slaughter a goat (or whatever they do nowadays) that's seems reasonably benign

There's a big difference between religion and belief. Belief doesn't necessarily rely upon supernatural omnipowerful beings.
