Thread on DJ Santana's message board...please give feedback!

Ok...I am copying and pasting a thread from my best friend's message board on www.djsantana.com

As most of you know...my best friend is DJ Santana...a trance DJ here in Tampa. I would like to get your feedback because I plan on posting it back in that thread. The thread is regarding Paul's June mix. Here is the track listing:

01 - Kane - Rain Down On Me (tiesto remix)
02 - DJ Cor Fijneman ft Anita Kelsey - Healing (vocal mix)
03 - Passiva - Clouds Like Heaven (faraway project remix)
04 - Marc Dawn - Random Walk (nu nrg remix)
05 - Signum ft. Anita Kelsey - Come Around Again (extended vocal mix)
06 - True Form - Forbidden Colours (original mix)
07 - JS Ten - Elements (naxos project remix)
08 - Jono Grant vs Mike Koglin - Circuits (original mix)
09 - Cloud Nine - Transmission (g & m project remix)
10 - Matt Darey - Nocturnal Delight (sandler mix)
11 - Dumonde - Cold (original mix)
12 - Abel Ramos - Aquarius (randy katana remix)

Now here is a response from someone followed by our responses:

I thought this mix was horrible. You would think a successful Dj would play what the fans wanted to hear but I guess all that is changing in the years 2000+. Not trying to bash you Santana but personally I feel you have gone downhill ever since you quit spinning breaks. I know trance is your new thing but you are running off fans that have liked you forever. Take this how you want, whether is a critique or whatever, but I personally dont like the new trance faze people are going through. Some of your older Progressive mixes were good especially the Bonus Mix but here lately Im not feeling it!

Its amazing to me how you can listen to the bonus mix and like it and not like this mix. They are the same genre of muisc. BUT thats Ok like I always say...
You can't please em all, all the time.

Santana

Theres alot more vocals in this mix that I really dont care for. Its to trancey where as the Bonus Mix was more progressive sounding.

Hmmm...vocals makes it sound more "trancey"? That's a first. Vocals tend to take away from the feel of trance sometimes. Can't say I have ever heard someone say that vocals made something sound more trance like. I have heard vocals can make a trance song sound more like "cheese", but that's another conversation in itself. There are enough breaks DJ's in Tampa and the surrounding cities...dime a dozen if you ask me. Trance isn't his new thing...he has been spinning it for years. A successful DJ doesn't exactly spin what the crowd wants to hear...he spins the style that he wants to be defined as (as a DJ). It may seem like he is spinning what you want to hear when the truth of the matter is that you chose to be a fan because of the style that he is spinning. It just seems like he is spinning what you want to hear. It should be that fans like the DJ for what he is and stands for...not what they want him to be. If not, then you are a DJ for all the wrong reasons. Spin what you LOVE or why even bother? To please other people that wouldn't support you otherwise? Doesn't make too much sense if you ask me. If you aren't spinning what you LOVE then your heart will never be 100% into and after a while it will take its toll on you. You will always feel like something is missing.

Keep spinning what you love Paul. Your true fans will support you. I wouldn't want you to have bandwagon fans...fans that only support you when you are spinning what they want to hear and then bitch when you spin what you love. No thanks.

Keep putting out mixes like the February bonus mix and the January mix. Neither mix has vocals...they kicked ass...and they are the true definition of trance.

I am copying this entire thread and posting it on tranceaddict. I would love to see feedback from some trance fans (err...people going through a "faze") and then post it here.

I kinda agree with him, Santana you're a great DJ and I'll always support you whether it's trance or breaks, I'm more of a dance person so personally I do dig breaks more, But. I also love trance mostly for the vocals, I'm a vocal junkie, without vocals it just isn't complete, I can't listen to a beat go on & on and be sattisfied, on the other note, I could see where he is coming from about you losing fans cause you're a trance DJ now, cause mainly it was your cd's & mixes that got me so addicted to that type of sound, now I can't get enough of it. Trance is great music don't get me wrong, but for me it's a bit too commercial some ppl will say that about breaks also, but you honestly can't go out in a cd store & buy a breakbeat mix cause it's more underground, now you can go out and find any trance mix pretty much in any store. I really dig your breaks rmx's that you do and I luv the trance breaks you do as well. But I'm not gonna say you're losing a fan just cause you choose to be a trance DJ now that is your preference. But I will say that I miss your breaks mixes, keep doin what you do Santana! You're always #1 in my book. And when is your new record comin out I heard Mark Sanchez play a rmx of Ong Diggi Dong @ Icon when Infiniti played, is that your mix? Damn I luv it! Great job!!

Breaks will never die

haha! Breakbeat is NOT underground! I can't get away from it! Trance CDs are primarily imported...apparently because there is a demand. Tampa is just stuck in a time warp.

Tell me what trance DJ is spinning here in Tampa...other than Paul? I will give you a huge list of all the breaks DJ's...it goes on and on. Most of the vocal breaks that you love were initially trance songs. Without them you wouldn't have the breaks version.

Yes it will, because I will kill it.

The tracklist I saw had lots of titles by great artists/producers. Enough said.
Well done, DJ Santana. Keep 'em coming TRANCE-style. Cheers.

Anything Armin and Nu NRG is always good. Whats great is evry week theres a new tune coming out on A State of Trance. This week Markus Shulz presents Elevation - "Somewhere b/w Clear Blue and Envio remixes of "Time to Say Goodbye" I cant get enough of this music. If only there were a club in Tampa that would allow a trance night on a Friday or Saturday. WOW! That would be tha shit.

BTW...just thought I would point out that it was never a "team up" in the way that one might think. Fred Baker is the person behind all of the Mr. Sam productions. That is all his work...his creations. Need to give credit where credit is due. Yes...once again...I am biased.
