The new Prodigy track for download!

The Prodigy are to release the track 'Memphis Bells' as a digital download available in a strictly limited edition of 5,000. Each of the 5,000 downloads will be a unique variation of the track, accompanied with a unique variation of the artwork. 2 pounds is a little steep for one bloody song isnt it? I dont care what song it is.

I will say this is a mighty fine cool idea though!

Posted by Floorfiller on Jun-25-2004 21:26:

so wait...they made 5,000 different versions of the song?

Posted by ++ EGO ++ on Jun-25-2004 22:06:

I strongly support this idea. The price seems fair, as Mr. Howlett seems to be putting a lot of effort on this (as far as I've understood) and he once mentioned about this goal of "changing the tune every now and then" (I guess he was talking to someone from Underworld, as they're know for changing their tunes when playing live).

If they allow bank debit from my bank (which I don't think it's likely to happen, unfortunately), I will sure try to buy my copy.

I like the sound of this. It is certainly a novel idea not unlike Prince's recent CD giveaways at concerts to count for sales in an oblique way, but I do wonder:

Are each of the 5,000 downloads individually "hand-crafted" by Liam himself or is this in fact the work of a computer program, which customizes the raw audio data by slicing and dicing 8-bar sections and crossfading and whatnot as necessary . . . and then encodes the music into a conveniently downloadable format (like MP3) for your final enjoyment?

Likewise, it sounds to me like the different mixes for different playback media may be variations on a theme, processed by a selection of EQ settings. 5.1 surround sound can be downmixed to stereo, and as for the DJ mix, "pump up the bass", as is commonly said.

I am interested nonetheless.

agreed. howlett has always been looking for unique ways to engage the listener and tweak their listening experience. looks like this is it. thumbs up.

this would make for an extremely pricey boxed set.

i wonder what the mp3 scene will do with this one,,, release 5000 diffrent versions of the same track?

Posted by ga11agher on Jun-26-2004 13:31:

I'd be interested to find out exactly how 'unique' each one of these tracks is (i think however it will perhaps only be slight diferences in structure of track, eq settings ect.) - we will see, I hope I'm plesantly suprised

wow, that sounds crazy, who's actually going to buy it? (people on TA I mean)

That's what would happen if the file size varies by a kb, but can't see 5mb worth of differences. Must be more to the slight variations.

thats an amazing idea!
curious how they came up with the idea and worked it out

not my music taste, but i'm sure the real fans will like it!

Not going to spend money on an mp3 download.
Not used to buying from internet anyway.

point being?

Posted by noikeee on Jun-28-2004 19:36:

i'm sorry but this is very lame. it sounds like you're on ejay choosing what loop to pick. haven't heard the whole track of course but it doesn't seem any good.

Posted by Prism on Jun-28-2004 19:43:

The 5000 versions of the track were downloaded instantly, selling out in about 15-20 minutes, you telling me this isn't a good idea?

Posted by noikeee on Jun-28-2004 19:47:

comercially yeah, and you gotta aplaud them for trying out something different, but i don't think that musically it turns out being any good

Posted by Floorfiller on Jun-28-2004 19:50:

this is stupid because what if i want a certain version out of the 5,000 that i hear them play live or something...then i get buy it because its lost in 4,999 other versions of the track?

Posted by Aldrian on Jun-28-2004 21:53:
