Party Hat TUTORIAL : Mixing down & Mastering

I've been hammered with mastering and mixdown questions over the last few months, so I decided to make a tutorial on it.

You can find it in the Tutorial section of www.rebirth-productions.co.uk

It's an in-depth tutorial covering the different aspects of the mixdown and mastering stages.

Hope it helps some of you guys.

Pierre Pienaar eh? What a great name you've got!

Nice, will have a look at this tomorrow, but always a good thing when people share knowledge!

(BTW off topic but my friend is changing her last name to pienaar next month as she's getting married, so one more enters the world)

Wink Absolutely DYNAMITE!

Hey thanks so much! You know I ALWAYS read a mastering tutorial. ALWAYS. They all pretty much say the same thing, but sometimes someone has enough balls to say THIS is good and THIS is bad...I like that you make recommendations rather than just say "experiment to see what's right for your mix". PFFFT. Like my mix is gonna need drastically different measures than yours, right?
Really great Pierre! Nice site too! *Sigh. luv to hate you.

P.S. Whats bosots ?

Great Job you did there m8

I was particularly interested in the mix-down part of the tutorial and now things are more clear to me. Thank you for that m8

All the best!

Cheers!

One more question:

You say,

Also remember that you shouldnt mix your track with the compressor onIt should only be put on as the last step before exporting.

Do you mean dont mix the track with the compressor on THE MASTER CHANNEL?? or on the sends?? what?

No, it should be on the master channel, but it should NOT be on while you're working on the track. You should only turn it on or enable it once the track is finished and you're done setting your levels. Putting the compressor on is the last step you have to do before you export the track.

Did that clear it up ?

HEY REBIRTH...

Do you have any recommended default settings or sidechains when it comes to using WAVES in your mastering?

Obviously every case is different but do you use presets? Or have you come up with something that works really well?

thanks!

Posted by ReBirth on Jul-01-2004 18:35:

Hi mate,

No I don't use presets. I just start the plug-ins up and program them from scratch. The guide settings I gave in the tutorial should give you a general idea of where your settings should be tho.

Cmon...no presets? not even PERSONAL presets?

Geez...why u gotta make my life so hard!

Thanks for the great tutorial, rebirth! Are you going to add anything more to the mastering section? Any more tutorials planned?

I'm going to try and do a tutorial every month or so if I get the time.

The next one will be on creating acid lines from different types of VST plugins.
