i think the definition of a good dj is:

* technically nailed
* ability to read the crowd
* quick reactions
* creativity
* adaptability

a very good dj is a guy who can play a track you hate in a way that will make you beg to hear it next time (among other things)

And if I may add 1 more..

* not a complete jerkoff

yes, its important not to be a twat.

although it does actually work for some DJ's. Richie Hawtin is reknowned for being a big headed twat, but i will still go and see him play because he is wicked!

Impressive answer and totally correct.

The only other thing that you need to add to the list is the ability to put something of your own personality into what you are doing. Then it's up to people if they like it or not.

I would also say that you need to be able to make the crowd go crazy time and time again if your able to do that then I would say you qualify as a good DJ.

Yup, but I think that is more the end result of being a good DJ rather than a component.

i think when the crowd has a good time and dancing alnight, to do this .. i think you require some things like .. reading the crowed, good track slection, good mixing ... and dont forget smile to the lady's :P

If you can walk into a room of random people and have the dancefloor rocking in only a matter of minutes, then I say you are a damn fine DJ regardless of what you keep in your bag of DJ tricks.

As well as what tu_face says (all of which is very true)

I think a good DJ should also be a good producer of his/her own music and be able to use his/hers own productions along with other artists productions in his/hers sets. DJ'ing for me should be about being individual with music as well as being able to DJ for DJ's sake.

Sounds a bit life of brian, maybe I should change my nick to Loretta...

i dont think production has anything to do with whether or not you are a good dj.

unfortunatly a lot of people seem to bundle the two together because of people like armin, who only really started djing to promote his own productions and others from his label. i agree that yes, if you produce as well then it adds something to your arsenal, but i certainly wouldn't regard anyone as a better or worse dj because they do or dont produce

you need to be in it for the sake of djing, you need to have only 1 motive when going behind the decks, and that is to make people go barmy. nobody will really care if its your tune or not at 6am
