front room at system

there is something about the front room at system that is very bothersome, and what is so bothersome to me is the colour of the lights. red is my favourite colour,,, but,, those lights drive me nuts,, they are really irritating. i find it to be extreamly uncomfortable to be in there, it kind of feels like i am in a cell, which sucks because a lot of djs that i really like spin there and i like to watch them. i have talked to some other people and they have agreed with me. I do go to OCAD and have taken some courses on colour and colour theory,, a test was done on coloured rooms in prison, and red was aparently the worst, and orange was the best. red is a very agressive and angry colour.. i think that a better colour choice for the lights would be,, a mix of blue, purple and pink, because they are sort of cool colours and more relaxing. the blue and purple are cool and the pink brightens up the room a bit. the red makes it feel very hot in there. i think with those colours people are more likely to stay in the front room for a longer period of time and people would be more comfotable dancing there, because right now it feels like people are just aching to get out of there, once the main room opens up everyone goes in there. i would like to see more of the front room djs get more recognition, and i want to see more people dancing in the front room. what does everyone else think? i say get rid of the red!

Maybe that was the look they were going for?

I agree. I find it really uncomfortable dancing in there as well. Most nights at SYSTEM, if it were not for the fact that I really want to be supporting our own in the front room, I would be avoiding it altogether. Too stark, too bright and just not inviting. So it's the red lights taht make me angry in there...and here I was blaming the vodka for my behavior.

Invisible Grin

It could be the fact that they painted their concrete walls stark ugly white. I feel like I'm in an insane asylum in some screwed up movie. With red lighting for ambience... You know just after they hack open the oh so brave and curious white dude.

yea same here! i try to avoid the room as much as possible. i even hate going there at the end of the nite just to pick up my coat!

those birght white walls and that colour of lighting makes u cringe and wanna run away! i def can't find a comfortable niche to dance in there or to SIT!! hopefully something can be done cos it is a shame for the dj's spinning in there. they might start thinking there's something wrong with them! ...

Yeah I hardly stay in the front room for that reason as well. The lights bother me for some reason. *shrug*
It also may be the fact that I think to myself, "wtf am I doing dancing infront of the entrance". And I go to the proper dancefloor.

Posted by The Highroller on Jun-28-2004 19:34:

to be honest, i don't really like it either. it's waaaaayyyy too bright in there.

Posted by lipstick on Jun-28-2004 20:06:

wow, i didnt know so many people felt the same,,,, yeah it is way too bright in there,,, thats why i thought blue purple and a bit of pink colours lights in there would work better...

I think they could do two small things to improve the feel in this room. Dim the lights number one, and number two...change the tint of the color to a clear or and other lighter shade. I agree, way to bright in there.

i actually do miss the old vip room too,, it was a good place to chill and sit down too... i remember one time,, i was in the mainroom and i was trying to make my way to the bathroom and some dude accidentally jabbed me in the eye with a few fingers and i had to sit in the vip room with ice for like an hour.
at least you could sorta talk in there and say hi and chat... WITHOUT RED LIGHTS!

Very good points here.........if this is truly the opinion of most people, I cannot see how our or other's feelings regarding the room will not make it's way to System management.

We know from experience that if enough people speak up, they are open to change (remember the giant spliff-smoking space monkey in the breaks room?)...that was an experiment that people's opinion quickly brought down. Remember too that the front room is good in that the sound is much improved and for the most part, the booth gear is far more reliable too.

They just need to address the lighting/shading issues and IMO, the unfavourable traffic sense and flow (the latter is tougher as they've committed to making that room access to entrance/exit/coat check and that seems only fixable by some well placed walls)

Hope good solutions can be found regardless

No door between the bathrooms and the DJ booth is sorta gross also...

I totally agree about the VIP room and the front room. Last time I was waiting in the front room it was like a sauna and I nearly fell asleep before getting into the main room. Definitely could use some softer lighting in there too! The VIP room was real cozy and had COMFY chairs.. now it sort of looks like a cave/dungeon. Who's next on the RACK ?

i duno.. to be honest. i don't like system at all now after the renovations. it was awesome the way it was before... it was a sketchy old basement.. system! it was cool. after the renovations its was nice at first.. change, but then i really got bored of everything there. i just dont like the new setup they have, and the sound hasnt improved all that much either.

ah well... goodbye system!

FOREVER!!

I think brynne should break into system on sunday, and paint the front room while nobody is watching.
tra la la la. I just made your colour scheme better.

that would be classic.

Posted by lipstick on Jul-01-2004 16:00:

well maybe i will break into system and paint it! and change the lights! i dont mind the new renovations,,, well i like the main room.... but,, i dont like the look of the breaks room,,, they need an airconditioner in there.. and they took out the seats! i think they should put some seats back in there... i think they should pur more seats back into system in general... the only real problem i have is the front room really.. they need to paint it and change the lighting.

I have never been to system, so I can't comment on the design, BUT I am an interior design student...

This mood they are trying to create with the red lighting, it is known as a no no in design, unless used in a space where people will be for a short period of time (like a hallway, or a bathroom). A space is suppose to make you feel happy or energetic in a club, it's not suppose to make you feel angry.

Either they hired some sketchpad designer, or they just came up with something on thier own. Obviously not effective. I want to go there now just to see it !

Posted by lipstick on Jul-02-2004 16:18:

i agree with you 100%. the lighting is all wrong,, what kind of lighting would you suggest for people to be comfortable dancing in for a long period of time?

Posted by disko-kandi on Jul-02-2004 16:32:

blue haze! i always feel comfortable with the blue ... maybe some organe like the sunlight at sunset in b/w is nice too.
