Sad Tiesto Review in Chicago 06/26/04

Whats up everyone!!

I have been reading all the posts from TA for quite awhile and I must say this is a great site. I was so pissed at Tiesto's performace in Chicago that I thought this would be the perfect time to give everyone a update about the night. This is copy of a post I put on Tiesto's web site as well.....

I must say to my very very sad disappointment that my favorite DJ in the world Tiesto came to my home town of chicago last night only to suprise me and the people of Chicago with a very uninspirationed and unenguaging show. I was hoping to hear Tiesto play some beautiful trance and high energy songs; similar to his DJ sets in Ibiza , his DVD set, songs from Just Be and ,aybe Nyana. However, Tiesto( surprsingly) for 2 1/2 hours just played very simple hard beats. It was only at the very end of the show ( the last 45 min) that the Tiesto that has inspired many did show up. I am not sure why Tiesto played the way he did in chicago. I personlly feel that he should stick and feel confident in playing the songs he plays in Europe in the States as well. I just felt that he might has changed his style when he was playing tonight beleieving that the Chicago crowd would like hard beaty stuff. Tiesto is a fantastic DJ when he inspires and creates a level of passion and energy in his music. I am not sure if Tiesot himself is just losing his passion and energy for the music or if it was just a bad performance. I just hope that Tiesto is reading this message and realizes in his heart that his performace in chicago was a a poor show and not a true reflection of his outstanding artistic and music ability. Please come back to Chicago again but this time be true to yourself and change the music scene and culture in this city for the better; dont infer or seek advice from other people at the club on what to playand/or falling prey to the dogma that since chicago is known for house music that hard beaty stuff is the only stuff people listen to hear or will enjoy. Your music and your performances in Europe are amazing. A true artisic expressing feelings and passion in the music you play. Please come back to show not only Chciago but America what Tiesto and Dance Music ( a new classical music for this era) is really about.

Best,

Dave P.

P.S. I was the person at your Chicago concert holding the Just BE Album cover on the right hand side of you. I was wearing black glasses and a light pink shirt.

In response:

Tiesto did look and act very tired. I just think in the future if Tiesto hopes to contiune to gain popularity and maintian his fan base he should only schedule gigs for shows he feels he can perform up to his standard. I personlly think the touring around the US in each city in a month was an extremly ambitious project which ultimely lowered the perforamce of Tiesto and his music selection. In the future Tiesto or other dj's should just pick a few very large venues and just play theior hearts out instead of this current trend of visting tiny club to tiny club. This is true with Paul Van Dyk as well. It would have been worth the extra $$ and time to drive to Washington D.C. to know that the real Tiesto would show up. It just really sad ( not only with Tiesto but with other dj's) who over book themselves to the point where their dj'ing and artisitc talent become lowered. I persoanlly think the attempt to focus on trying to make money as quickly as possiable without reguard to the music quality and experience will ruin an artist's career. I was hoping that a DJ like tiesto would not fall prey to such a philoshoy but it seems that this "greed" for $$$ is universal amongst the "more talented" dj world. I just would like others to sympithize with those of us who for some time were eager and excited to see Tiesto in concert in Chicago but were ultimetly disappointed. And Ill be very honest with you , tiesto is not the only dj. I spent big $$$ to fly to central park this past friday to see Paul Van Dyk perform in Central Park only to see and hear a very tired and unispired performance. Obviously PVD's performace angered me more because of the $$$ I dished out to see him live but like I said this menaltity now to travel all over the world in such a small amount of time to quickly cash in on a trend imo has effected what I saw as a moment to really push electronic music ( especially in america) in a direction which would be appericated by many people. I envisoned a day when electronic music would be seen a true and expressive form of music today. A combination of music's old and musics present. Electronic music to me was oone which created a universal level of energy, passion, and emotions unlike any other music expereinced since the time of classical music. It was fitting to see DJ's and labels from Europe begin this new trend in music since it was these countries which also gave us classical music. I think in Europe this trend is still alive because of the performaces and exposure to this music. Just look at the Tiesto DVD . Obviously in this perforamce he didn't look tired or just quickly come to the conclusion that tommorw Ill be playing in a dome. Tiesto carelly planned this event and planned the set for a certain energy levles. A really showing of what electronic music is about. Here in america our hope was for dj's like Tiesto and Paul Van Dyk to break down walls and show the uninformed clubbers and laymen/women that this music can give someone a natural high and take someone to an elevated state of being. that this music should not be associated with drugs, or ravers, and should be seen a musical form. But with performances like Tiesto's in Chicago this June this day when artist and music are finally appericated at this level will take awhile to a culturally accpected in the States. Muisc should always be about passion and love. When this is lost , no matter which musically form we are taking about the music suffers! An interesting example is Hip hop. In its early stages this music form was an extension of energy and passion for the african american community. However, as its popularity blossumed $$$ and greed took hold and artists and labels were created not out of passion or love for the music but to exploit this trend of following in hip hop. and it has ruined the current sound of this music. Listen to any music that you love and you can hear the passion, the orginallyity, and feel the energy it provides. AS A DJ one is supposed to find music which encompasses this , reguarless if its 145 bpm or 87 bpm. The DJ was to be a composor of life , selcting and discriminating music which opnly provided this sound unpressured by record labels and $$$. A true form of artisitc expression and freedom. This said can we honestly say after Tiesto's Chicago performace exibited this? The obvious answer is no. A man being driven to play everywhere to make $$$, now hoping to sell more dvd's to make more $$$, and playing tracks from his record label wiht the hope to continue to make more $$$ is not at all like the man that I did admire and love . If Tiesto is reading this please follow your heart and do what you think is best for you and the music.

This said I still love the music Tiesto has made that has touched so many in a special way. It was just sad to see a man who I admired for some time come to my hometown and gie the perforamce he did. I hope a revisit to Chicago this summer can mend my heart

P.S.
I agree with the comment about Vision. What a horriable place. The crowdedness was expected but the rudeness of the staff was unexpectable. All I wanted was for Tiesto to sign an album cover I carried with me the whole show and they are just pushing people around yell at them to get the f*#$ out!! Outragious.

Hmm, it sucks he played a bad show for you, I saw him here in Boston 2 weeks ago and he blew my mind...

Posted by XtacyDance on Jun-28-2004 22:17:

It so not him to play bad, He was in Miami on the 18th of June and he honestly out mastered himself. I love every second of his 4 hour set.

I quite surpised to see on Tiestos forum website than many other tiesto fans also felt disappointed in his performace in other cities as well.

What the most intersting bit of converstation on the forum was the debate as to if the whole #1 thing has gotten to Tiestos head.

I definetly noticed in Chicago that Tiesto seem to be more interested in holding conversation with the bar whore next to him than trying to enguage the crowd. this really pissed me off since I was expecting the Tiesto seenon his DVD.

To be very honest with you all I think Paul Van Dyk takes the entire dj/ artist thing more seriously and I love that about him.You never see him drinking or conversing with people next to him the entire show. He is just so into it. I also think ,like PVD, armin and ferry are very fan friendly and don't think of themselves as celebs. Take time to sign autographs and take photos. Its funny to see how fame and $$$ can fu$# up an artist. Let hope Tijis takes some needed R&R to think through was he is doing. A side note: Tiesto is making another DVD of him touring the USA ..gezzzz.. if this isn't cheesy than I dont know what is!another $$$ making opportnuity I guess. But like PVD said " Once the focus is on drugs, or the club, or the money the music ultimimtly suffers. This is just crassy tasteless society that I am not interested in." True words spoke from the real king of trance ----what a class act indeed

saw Tiesto in cleveland, ohio the 18th of june, amazing!!!! great performance!!

here in dallas he started out in a very soft way and the worked up to a very energetic and powerfull set.

he played for 3 hours. after the first 30 minutes he started blowing up the club! amazing set!

I think the mood of the Dj, as well as the vibes he fells when on the club influence a lot on the outcome of the set

like PVD isnt commercial. He made motorola tunes, had a number 1 hit in the dutch charts (NOT the dance charts but the normal pop chart. he reached the number 1 spot in a bit weird way.)PVD was on the dutch TMF awards event, the tmf awards event targetgroup are female teenagers listing to crappy idols music. Dont you call that commercial?! Every big name trance dj is commercial!

Well PVD is a more shy guy, tiesto is when he is spinning more open and friendly. It is just their personality.

his DVD set

please dont overrate his concert. THe dvd is edited in such way you see the best parts. Music wise the concert was at some point pretty boring. Although it was a special night, with a great lighting an visual show. But at Ferry Right Way Of gig Ferry played a much better set then tiesto!

If you ask for my trance dj top 5 then tiesto is my number one! But the thing with tiesto is, and he said that in multiple interviews: When he plays it is everything or nothing. You have a great night or a boring night. There is nothing in between.
So tiesto didnt get you going, well these things happen. It is not fun when you paying a lot of money to see him but yeah that is a risk you always will have. But dont call tiesto a commercial moron or something. I saw him a few weeks back at his Just Be release party and he blew the roof off!

Thumbs down DJ Tiesto Chicago 06/27/04 - The Club Excalibur sucked!

My views:

Tiesto spun alright. I enjoyed the DJ's before him better. Although they were bad mixers they did however, have a few good beats.

What really took my mood off - was the venue "Excalibur" The staff was extremely rude. The place was exceedingly over crowded; there was no place to move. I had a guy's ass trying to grind right in front of me, and this girl's tits right on my back.... it was gross, I couldn't even get off the freakin' floor cos I was so trapped. I'm NEVER going back to that club again! and I suggest Tiesto to make a better choice when it come to location... Further, I think someone ought to contact the manager there; his name is "Shawn" and tell him that he seriously needs to reduce their "We're at capacity" size by like 20%. I dont mind paying more for the tickets as long as I can get my space on the dance floor to move a few inches.

All in all, it was a waste of my money & time (I drove for 4 hours each way, and spent the night in Chicago too.)

P.S: Im someone who thinks Tiesto has awesome music with out the skills to put on a good show at some sort of a decent place.

i guess it all deoends on what Tiestpo sound your into because he has a few sides of him and I guess that is what always made him so special.. he can play hard, melodic and dream like and sometime she is inbetween...

This time in NY I was not in love with him... but I thoguth what he played was better than his Set for WMC at Space because his soudn was al ittle different over there then I had been used to listening in NY... but at the Ultra Music Festival he was insane...his music was mind blowing.

Tiesto's NY set actually got better towards the emd because he played things like Saltwater-Legacy
ATN-Miss a Day
Mark Noran-Phantom Manor
Tiesto-Forever Today

Those songs were the highlight of my evening and that was already towrds the end...

But hey no matter what I will always Love Tiesto his is an awesome person and when I met him I thought he was so Nice and he was everything I ever thought.

As lon as you hear "Forever Today" we know that the Tiesto we love is still out there

I know that he has been touring a lot and I have to say I am on his website and we all write all the time how we need him to come back here and rthere and well on this tour he really went out of his way to make that happen for all of us. He has not been to NY in a a year since may 16 2003 and already I was so desperate.

Love is in the air

I wish I could have gone to see his last US Show. But time, money and work would not allow it
How ever I did see Tiesto June 2nd in SD, June 4th in SF and Both his LA shows June 5th and 6th. Now that was amazing. Every show was diffent. With every city he showed them what he can do and is capable of doing. He tore each club up with his Track selection and his ablity to mix and work the crowd.
I am sorry that he was a disapontmet to some. But Tiesto has changed is sound over the years makeing it his own. This sound is a lot harder more techy; but still unbelivable! You also have to remeber DJ's have bad days too, and can make mistakes.
He is #1 in the world and for good reason imo.
