Picture of the earth at night

Saw this pic in the wallpaper thread and found the original:

I like the way the Nile is lit really brightly.

Funny how Puerto Rico in the caribbean is one complete glowing island.

We are seriously over populated

this made me realize...Where's Canada?

Posted by websley on Jun-30-2004 19:17:

Impressive
Even Third world countries like India are that shiny!
I think there are 3 "main" zones in this one: US, Europe and Japan.

Impressive, though!

I can see my house lights from here.

Posted by Floorfiller on Jun-30-2004 20:35:

for the original picture...what did they do...take two pics and put it together or just make it on a computer? because obviously it can't be night time everywhere at the same time

Posted by Krypton on Jun-30-2004 20:38:

look at korea. s. korea brightly lit, and north korea only has pyonyang lit. a good place to have an observatory would be in the himilayas. way high up and no lights.

what was the sky like in new york city with no power>?

what constellation is that looks familiar?

Posted by cviper on Jun-30-2004 21:06:

You guys realize that a geostationary satellite is always above the same spot of the earth?

That is if the pictures were taken by geostationary satellites, there must have been several. Or a single satellite was used to take several pictures. Either way several pictures were taken at different times and then merged into one.

Well,

I like how the supposedly power-devoid region is pitch black... even darker than the ocean or anything else on the earth. Real believable picture... maybe a black hole lives there

Posted by TranceSeeker on Jun-30-2004 22:41:

LOL yes, how can one picture be taken if it's not night everywhere on earth on one moment?...
Must be joined together I suppose...
Nice pic without doubt though...
