Urs Meier forced into hiding

Meier forced into hiding Wednesday June 30 2004 Swiss referee Urs Meier has been forced to go into hiding after a hate campaign waged by the English media following his decision to disallow Sol Campbell's goal in the Euro 2004 quarter-final. Meier has seen details of his private life splashed all over The Sun, who also published his e-mail address and laid a giant England flag outside his home in Switzerland. He has received death threats and a barrage of hate mail after being held accountable for England's exit from Euro 2004 with his decision during the clash with Portugal. Meier has even called upon the police to protect him and his family. "I am taking these threats very seriously," said Meier in The Guardian. "I'm absolutely shocked by the media campaign against me and the attacks from the supporters. I always thought the spirit of fair play was important in England, with respect for officials. I never expected this reaction. "I had a wonderful tournament with three fantastic games, and I'm feeling good about that. But the English newspapers, especially The Sun, have caused a big problem. It is really a big shock for me here in Switzerland. "I have security problems and this is not the right way to handle referees' decisions, whether they are right or wrong. "The police are here with me now as we speak. I'm not going to leave Switzerland but am somewhere where nobody knows me." http://euro2004.itv.com/latest_news/story_117452.shtml |
The Sun's reaction:

| Swiss declare war on Sun By CLODAGH HARTLEY WAR-dodging Switzerland finally went into battle yesterday against The Sun. The nation of clock-makers, who declared themselves neutral way back in 1815, went cuckoo over our jibes at bungling Euro 2004 referee Urs Meier. A radio station urged listeners to BOMBARD Britains favourite newspaper with phone calls and we were hit by a BLITZ of emails. The fearsome broadside came after we poked fun at the man who robbed England by disallowing Sol Campbells goal against Portugal. We laid out our giant Cross of St George flag outside his household appliance shop in Wurensol, near Zurich. And we urged readers to boycott Swiss rolls and Swatch watches. Zurich radio station Energy NRJ hit back by launching The Big Revenge. DJ Roman Kilchsperger told listeners to Give the s*** back to the English. He gave out our phone number on air and goaded fans into making abusive calls. Then they came in their dozens many of them from the DJs own foul-mouthed colleagues. Now YOU can get your own back on cocky DJ Kilchsperger by phoning his mobile on 00 41 793440922 or emailing him on [email protected]. Or call the radio station direct on 0041 1 250 90 00. Give em hell! http://www.thesun.co.uk/article/0,,...300994,,00.html |

i think asda should offer free head examinations to british nationals for making the sun "britain's favourite magazine". you have to be super-shallow to pay money for that crap.

Disgrace indeed. Nobody should suffer this kind of treatment for simply doing their job.
Well if he did his job right there wouldn't be a problem. I'd get fired for doing such a shitty performance. He gets what he deserves.
