To all those who didn't vote on Monday
100's of thousands of people today in Hong Kong wish they could trade places with you. Think about it....

Not that I'm against what you are trying to say but...It's a democratic country no? You should do what ever you want...if you didn't want to vote...we don't need anyone to make you feel guilty about it

I had no idea this was possible until this very moment, but i just realized that your neverending political threads make me sick. You seem like a cool guy, but i'm seriously considering adding you to my ignore list because it seems like every second thread i see is one about politics, usually by you.

just think of it this way:
jayx1 is TOTA's resident political analyzer.
dont understand?
jayx1 is to politics on TOTA as to you are to pointless threads on TOTA.
there, that should make sense now.
and just for the record, i don't care either way; it's something to read when i'm bored.

What he said...
Jayx1, you seem to be turning into the annual summer attention-whore. You should be proud...

Voting is, and always has been, optional. Some people just neglect to realize the impact of the government on their day to day lives... that or they don't care and don't think their single vote will make a difference... it's a good thing we all don't think like that.

i couldnt vote for anyone, they all sucked

As to voting, I say use it or lose it. Vote or lose citizenship.
I like Australia's system of compulsory voting actually.

yes but the argument can be made about how democractic compulsory voting is.

Voting is still a responsibility of Canadian citizenship, but theres no punishment for those who dont vote. Come on, at least spoil the ballot if you dont like anyone. I just ranted at my friend for an hour because he didnt vote.

well if we had regular voting day or just had any voting day declared a holiday then wouldnt you think it fair to expect people to vote? if not they get taxed an extra amount that year, its millions of easy dollars for the 1st couple of votes for any government which is good and if you have the whole day off can you really not get off your ass and vote? the polling stations are usually (at least in toronto) pretty damn close to your house
thats another reason i am for regular voting though, they could declare a voting day in the middle of june every year, so that it is warm out and people are more likely to go out in numbers
and i have to ask all the people against compulsory voting....what if (lets go out on a limb here) people really stop caring and one election, except for the candidates, nobody voted? what then? anarchy? dictatorship maybe?

Hey.. if ya didn't vote... you have NO right to complain.. that's the way I look at it

I dont agree with this. Consider this
People are different. People have different interests. Some are interested in politics and make a concerted effort to follow the issues. These people think about, evalutate and understand the implications of thier votes. But, of course, not everyone is like this. This is especially true, more and more, in developed countries where voting differences have little impact on peoples day to day lives. Forcing people to vote isnt going to make them interested and able to make an educated decision. So I ask whats better for a country: Having few politically educated people voting, or diluting those educated voting power by forcing non interested, non motivated voters to choose.
One of the problems with democracy is that non politically educated voters seem to be far more swayed by emotion and less willing to appeal to reason and search for accurate information. There are countless examples throughout history but the best one that comes to mind right now is south america. I am living in Chile right now and I have travelled through some very politically unstable countries. I just passed through Bolivia where there is a referendum to completely nationalize the country's natural resource industries stop exporting their resources. (this is what people have explained to me anyway). The country has been fucked around alot and the people have a legitimate reason to be pissed off. If passed, the vote (whether right or wrong) would likely shatter the delicate economy and ruin whatever progress they have gained in the past 15 years. But the vote is extremely popular with many in the lower class because its being pushed by unions and interest groups using fear and anger as an extremly powerful weapon. Whether you agree with the vote or not Knee-jerk reactions like this fueled by emotional campaigns are extremely detrimental to developing country's growth. The decisions needed for improvement almost never have immediate results and if politicians are getting kicked out every two years there's no way they are going to be motivated to make the proper decisions.
Democracy isnt perfect. People are human and make bad choices. It makes a politicians job much harder to sell to a hundred thousand educated when they know and understand the facts than 5 million who are swayed by platitudes and unreasonable promises. Forcing people who have no interest to make a choice doesnt do anyone any good. Ideally everyone would look into the issues and make an educated vote. But thats not going to happen. If you dont know who you are voting for and why you are voting, dont vote. It only hurts the country.

I agree but thats why i say there should be mandatory voting with a none of the above option. Then at least you have to make an effort to not care, be uneducated or whatever other excuse people use to not vote.
Posted by dnmr on Jul-03-2004 00:15:
they should let you vote over the net or something....its the whole going down their part....im way too lazy
Posted by Jayx1 on Jul-03-2004 02:25:
^^^^^^^^ is the reason why we need mandatory voting
LOL
