If you don't believe in God.....

....if you're in court and you don't believe in God, do they ask you to swear on the bible? Or do they even do that anymore? And if they do and you lie, is it bad?...because you don't believe in God, remember?

Random side throughts to follow:

God and whatever form most people believe it to be is so widespread that you can't get away from it. It's on our money and in the Pledge of Allegiance. Since church and state is supposed to be separate, why do Atheists have to deal with this? I mean...I'm cool with people who have faith. To each their own, right? But I don't force my views on them, so why are theirs forced on me?

I hear ya man, I'm the same way, people can believe in whatever they want, but don't force it on me, put I look at it this way, if I was in court and they said "Do you swear to tell the truth, so help thee god" (or whatever it is), I would be like "sure", then lie out my ass about everything.

an fuk it, I need more beer.

Posted by Eis on Jul-02-2004 00:19:

Here in Finland you don't have to swear on the bible in court, if you are not a member of christian church, you just have to give your word that you're telling the truth ;9

it's frightening, but by far not the only dumb entity in the world that has power over the way things are...

Well there really isn't any possible way not to force one's beliefs onto other people, if you make everyone romove all signs of religion from flags and money and stuff, people will think that athieism is being forced on them, and they would be right. There is no way to please everyone unfortunately. I dont really think that the word God written on someone forces anyone to beleive anything tho, just dont read/say it.

This is coming from an agnostic, so im kinda nutral in this argument, hehhee

if you wanna blame someone, blame Constantine the Great...after him, the world wasn't quite the same... and if you have no clue what i'm talking bout, please research before leaving some lame response... i'd do the same for all ya'll...

well... I just testified the other day in court, and there was no bible, just raised my right hand and agreed to what the lawyer said. although she did end it with 'so help you God.

if you lie on the stand it's still illegal, so whether you get smitten or not doesn't matter.

meh.

did you do jury duty? i've always wanted to get selected for a trial...that'd be awesome. of course...they don't choose lawyers because they know too much about stuff and can influence the jury...

Posted by davinox on Jul-02-2004 01:06:

actually, atheists can swear under "penalty of law."

I don't really think you want to be selected for jury duty.

What if I am polytheistic? I would be offended by pledge and currency bills.

please, you would be offended by being asked to coexist with em? chances are, if you're of a religion that doesnt support peaceful coexistence, then its not all that reputable religion to start with, and the government and powers that be will have your number in a while anyways. I dont remember where, but it says somewhere in the bible, "obey your earthly masters". This came into effect during the days of Martin Luther, and the peasant uprisings. It's ok to go for change, but not at the cost of chaos and death.

Posted by djshan on Jul-02-2004 14:22:

to begin with, im an athiest.. so therefore i believe its stupid to make them swear on the bible when in court... suppose you lie, will you be caught? hell no!

p.s. no offence to anyone

Some interesting thoughts about forcing views...
Consider this, for instanace. I attended two catholic schools during the last 5 years. I am an atheist. It was an unforgettable experience, especially religion classes. Comical, ironic, amusing as hell. I recommend it to anyone who is suffering from lack of adventures in school.

Believe in God or not, youre going to get hit under perjury laws if yah lie

Heres my viewpoint.
I dont beleive in the one "God" as most do. I was raised catholic and dont really have a problem with organized religion except for the fact that they all think they are right.
How the hell, can you all be right, almost every religion is based on something that happened thousands of years ago.
Anyone remember the "telephone" game you'd play in kindergarten?
After a while the message gets distorted and people change it to what they want others to hear.

They(religions in general) have the right idea, respect yourself and others.

My belief is that, there is no one god because that is impossible.
All living things have magnetic fields, or atleast they give off energy. Therefore in my eyes, those who chose to acknowledge it, are part of the collective conscious. Thats why sometimes you'll finish a friends sentence, or think of something the same time as someone else. Thats why pyramids were built all over the world in varying styles, yet none of the builders saw the others.
If i'm not mistaken calculus was invented by 2 people at the same time in different parts of the world as well.

Its not being psychic, its knowing. Its very hard to explain, especially on a forum, but I know theres others who believe as I do, and they know what I'm trying to say.

Because studies show that humans are using a small % of their brain, just reinforces my theory (atleast to me it does).
Start learning to use that other 95%

Hahaha, true. Anyway, for all you atheists and agnostics, I really recommend you read this book:

Patrick Glynn - GOD: THE EVIDENCE

It's not the book you think it is, it only gives you a bigger perspective on things, and everything is based on true facts, unlike the "big bang theory" and so on. To tell you a little bit of what it talks about : Cientists have proved all around the world that there are specific measures and constants (gravity, electromagnetism, general physics, etc.) which only end is to make life on earth possible. But what is this all for? or better yet, who made this possible?

I don't think jurors testify, I just had to go as a witness to an accident.

Even though I semi-agree with you there are some rather large holes in the reasoning there.

I mean, I'm not Patrick Glynn, I can't answer all your questions, and he can't also, but read his book, it really explains things without all the "rather large holes in the reasoning"...
