Just be confident in your skills and it will help ease your mind, making things easier.

Most likely nobody will even listen to you.

I was playing out for the first time to a group of 10-20 friends and friends-of-friends and nobody really gave a shit 'cause they were too busy drinking.

Just focus on giving people a good time, and my guess is that if it's not a group of trance lovers then you may have to compromise a little.
Think of it more as a DJ experience than a trance experience.

Cheers

check this out. spin what you want. be different. i spun at school once for an hour party and some guy told me to turn this trance shit off and put on some 50cent, so i reached in to my pocket pulled out 2 quarters and threw it at him and told him to fuck off, my best advice is spin what your use too. and some one will like it. and if no one gives you you the respect you earned then hit stop pack up your gear and tell your friend to put on a cd or something and just leave. dont change your style for anyone but your self. thats what i say

Just think of it as practice and even if you make a mistake or two, it won't matter because they probably won't even notice it. Just do your best and have fun!

Yeah, that's fine if you want to lose your audience...

audience........... well if you spin trance and your going to a house party with straight rap then i guess that it doesent matter? does it because the rap house isnt your 'audience' anyways.

Have fun is the best piece of advice. If you mixing is a bit iffy etc. who cares its only a house party, so enjoy yourself.

Try to set up your stuff earlier and make sure that the surface you are using is sturdy... a few weeks ago I did something similar at a friends house and I didn't realize how unsteady the table I was using was until I started. Everytime someone jumped around near it, the needles skipped. My first set sucked because I would have the two songs in sync, and then the needle would jump and they would be completely off. My second set that I did later in the night was much better because everyone was relaxed and not moving much.

Some other things to look for is to just make sure you plan out everything like where you're going to run all your cables etc, out of everyones way so nobody trips on them. Also you might wanna try to figure out how loud you're going to be since you don't want any neighbors complaining.

Most importantly, when you're actually spinning, don't be too nervous and remember that everyone there is out to have fun, and they most likely won't be judging your every move. If you mess up, chances are they won't be playing close enough attention to notice, so just remember to move on and try to have fun.

although i have utmost respect for the manner with which you dealt with the f00l, i think you do have to reach a happy medium. especially if you are playing somewhere where you know that not many people are down with the music you like.. but the question begs to be asked, if that was the type of audience, why where you asked to play?

back on topic, its always a safe bet to put some secret weapons in you record bag, as in tracks that you know will send people barmy. then if the worst comes to the worst and things don't go too well, you can always perk it up a bit with one of them

Lol allright. It will be a rap group that I will be playig to but since I do not mind some of the better rap (blasphmey I know ) I will def drop some of that. However, since my true love first and foremost is trance and edm in general I will definitly base my set off of it. I will only throw rap in because I feel that as the Dj, even if I know of better music than what my audience wants and I like other music that what my audience likes, I should still play some of the stuff I know they will like because I am there to get the audience movin and having a good time IMO. But I think I will definitly be opening a few eyes tonight when I mix a hour long set of pure edm. Anyways, thanks for the advice and as long as I stay relaxed I should have a great time.
