Does tolerance mean tolerating intolerance?

There's adieu these days about "tolerance." After all, we live in a multi-cultural society, a pluralistic western democracy. If you've taken University courses, especially in the liberal arts and social sciences, you've probably had the concepts of multi-culturalism and tolerance shoved down your throat, relentlessly, by activist groups and profs alike.

However, it seems as if we've reached a point that the emphasis on tolerance has become meaningless. It seems as if we must be tolerant, but only within the framework of a liberal/leftist mindset.

A few examples:

The Khadr family, here in Canada, was openly sympathetic to anti-western and terrorist causes. In fact, they had direct connection with Osama Bin Laden (the sons were themselves terrorists). The mother stated that she would be delighted to have her sons become martyrs. Yet we allowed them back into our country to bask in the benefits of our freedoms and tax payer funded medicare when it was convenient for them. This is tolerating intolerance.

Several Liberal party members in this country have made blatantly anti-American statements such as "damn Americans, I hate those bastards" with impunity(Carolyn Parish, Mississauga MP). Yet if someone made anything remotely hinting of hatred to any other specific group of people, it would be intolerant. Here again we tolerate intolerance.

Benjamin Netanyahu (sp?) the former Israeli PM was to give a speach at McGill University a couple years back but was not allowed to do so due to threats of violence from palestinian activists. The speaker was not allowedto the intolerance. Again, in Canada, we tolerate this sort of intolerance.

On these message boards, I have had people post things such as: "if you're a conservative than you don't belong on these boards." Also, during some discussion re: the upcoming federal election, a post stated that Stephen Harper should be "stifled." THis doesn't sound like the inclusiveness and equality espoused by leftist/liberals. It's typical of the hypocracy among these people.

I can think of many more examples.

Welcome to the dark side of a PC world. Fuck tolerance. I call 'em like I see 'em. I have found that people prefer I be honest with them rather than walk on eggshells around them. At least be transparent.

As for the people who say "damn Americans, I hate those bastards", I'm all for their free speech. I just wonder why, if they hate it so much, why do they stay? It's not like anyobody's forcing them to.

Do you tolerate crime? Do you tolerate pollution? Do you tolerate irresponsibility?

Tolerance is a nonsense concept to begin with. You can't tolerate everything or you endorse anarchy. But the only other option is to arbitrarily pick and choose what you want to tolerate and what you don't - which is what we've all been doing all along!

What "tolerance" is really about is power. Certain groups want to tell everyone what they should tolerate and what they shouldn't. Control the mind, and you control the man. The brainwashing is already in its advanced stages...
