state of dance in nyc

ok, we all know that the state of dance in nyc has been kinda depressing latey but i was so disapointed to find 2 mailers in my inbox saying the following:

this weekend at spirit:
"The lower level features house and trance by WKTU's Louie DeVito."
And sats new residency is Jonothan peters.

If matters could not be worse i see that the club formerly known as Exit/exit2/black is now called IKON (w/ the k backwards to be exact)
Why dont they let that building just burn down! We lose great venues like vinyl/arc and are left w/ this?

im afraid to look at the crobar line up but i hear it is pretty mainstream. Sooo aside form the occasional rave, underground party, or central park event where do you all go for good consistant dance music? i thought the matter/form sullivan room party was reliable but last time i went it was not exactly trance or techno--more electro.

im afraid im gonna be hanging up my dancing shoes for a while. :-(

The people in charge of Spirit, in my book, are the dumbest bunch of people around. They should do a background check of what happens to all the clubs that JP had residencies at - not a good track record if you ask me.

PvD was probably the last time Ill go in Spirit, unless they get their act straight.

Here HERE! This is the exact reason I joined this board ( 4 days ago to be exact) Because I'm kinda of dissillusioned with the NY scene. Few friends tried taking me places but these were hip-hop lounges.. or Pure KTU crap dance rooms.. and I was completely turned off. I know theres more to the scene, but thats Why I joined on here. To find "People In The Know." Moved out here from Anaheim about 3 years ago.. and I want to find my scene again.. A trance scene that never fails to inspire.. that echoes of the DJ's that I know and love Armin, Tiesto, Marcus, J00'F,Gitelman, Hardwick,PVD.. Gotta Find my sound .. and U guys (TA's) seem to know where that sound might be.

Yea I was thinking more of Friday and Saturday nights.. beacuase my weekdays I give to THA MAN!

Posted by sunnyval on Jul-09-2004 06:18:

tahstthe thing that kills me! you can find good parties on sunds, and weekdays. in particular i like the Tronic lineups on mondays and thurs nites seem popular as well. But the Moola is on fri and sat and the clubs are catering to big money=mainstream dance and hip-hop. I understand y they do that from a money perspective. As a group edm listeners are small compared to other genres but we are loyal. We gotta find a way!
On a side note anyone here ever go to albion/batcave? Its goth but the downstairs techno room is SICK..when i went there was 3 people in the room and i had the space to my self. its a differnt crowd very different.

KTU SUCKS!

Posted by BitchBoyNYC on Jul-09-2004 13:41:

So far, the club of my choice would have to be Crobar. Good music most of the time and the crowd is pretty cool imo.

Posted by trunks1022 on Jul-09-2004 14:27:

crobar has a pretty decent lineup from month to month. june had sander kleinenberg and sasha in two consecutive weekends, roger sanchez this weekend, james zabiela next. i'm not sure if u'd call it mainstream exactly but they show variety in their week to week lineups. i'll have to admit it, but avalon does bring in the talent as well. u have an eclectic group of djs (tiesto, j'00'f, dave seaman, emerson, pete tong, sasha, carl cox, etc) that have spun there, the only problem with it is the space in that joint, and it's too small for some of the DJs that have been there in the past. spirit was doing ok with lineups but i'm not understanding the JP thing. what happened to black? why isn't he spinning there anymore? so i guess this was spurred on by the direction that spirit is taking now.

that being said, i wish arc was still open, i could always count on that place for an afterparty of sorts if the night didn't pan out at an earlier venue. i wish i could check out made at cielo events, but as they are on sunday, i think i will have to miss out on howells and lavelle.

Posted by madhattared on Jul-09-2004 14:31:

yeah i'm giving avalon a 2nd chance with Marco V on the 23rd, but I don't think that it will be nearly as packed as Tiesto was last month. it better not be or you can cross it off the list.

It's the summertime folks, time to venture to the outdoors.

PS1 : http://ps1.org/exhibits/exhibit.php?iExhibitID=7

Festivus : Sunday 12 - 8 pm in Battery Park, on the tip of Manhattan.

With the Statue of Liberty in the background, under the sun and in the grass, come play with us. This year it is on the big grassy lawn, not on the pavement.

More than just a party, it's a summertime experience: great music in the open park, unlike any other vibe, unlike any other party.

Delivering Music this time around:

Dan Barnes
Brendan Benke
Gaby Dershin
Dave Hollands
Nathan Leonard
Matt Licata
Melvin Moore
Danny Morales

Prepare for the Festivus Games including feats of strength

Bring blankets to sit on.

At Festivus: Please, please clean up all your own trash including cigarette butts and bottle caps. We will not be allowed to do another one if we leave any trash at all.

Vendors in the park sell water and other things. Nearby resturant/bar sells liquor but Be very, very careful with alcohol consumption. City officials will be monitoring us. Suggestion: bring a mcdonalds or burger king cup with lid and put your beverage in that.

Trains: 1,9 to South Ferry 4,5,6 to Bowling Green N,R,W to Whitehall J,Z to Broad Street

well then...this is def the BEST time to check out those places, thanks for mentioning it...i think the smaller venues are better since only the hardcore/informed ppl will attend those... i gave up on more mainstream venues ever since ARC closed.

Posted by MaDDHatteR on Jul-09-2004 19:38:

sooo.. Crobar??? thats it .. ? And JP residency.. well shit thats not encouraging now is it?

First off im a sis not a bro, and i have gone to sullivan room, if you read my post you saw that. Its not a reliable party on fris and sats. I love Tronic so i give them that. I will go to matter/form events i have even gone to see dave hollands at delaguarda as well. recently i attended a cancer bennefit in Coney isle so i am educated. i follow Djs not clubs so i go where they go. As for cielo- i rem hearing it was an upscale tight door so ive never tried them out perhaps they have loosend up a bit? and Ive never heard of table 50. Feel free to enlighten me

as for that battrey park thing i wish i could go god damn sundays i think im the only person in the world that works sundays-- o well gald to have my fris and sats instead.

later

table 50, tuesdays and wednesdays! place of choice
as for spirit, many expectations since it is the same address as a place so many people obsessed over....so understand the disappointment, but yeah management there sucks. they had good connections for a bit but then opted for what you see now. go figure. crowd there always suck so i guess they are trying to make sure the steady stream of bad crowd keeps coming back.
