Electrical Apprentices

Umfortunatley i had alot of shit to deal with and missed out on the Union's registration...and have called them asking several times whens the next sign-ups

Which they all answer check the sites...VERY HELPFUL...BITCH!

Anywayz i wanna know is there anyone here taking this trade as an apprentice?

Or can anyone tell me what to do?

Like im fucked...i need work and they havent givin me any specifics on when they will start-up registration again.

I would also like to know if there are anyone doing this trade through OYAP?

ull never get in thru the union..what u have to do is go to a an electricion company go in talk to the owner and ask for a job..for the first few months ull be working a shit job prolly in the shop moving boxes and so forth..but then they will get u signed up with the union and then u can start ur apprenticeship...all unions never accept u if u go to the union yourself...do as i say and ull be in...

But IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers) does not work like that...the method of joining is to go through the JointApprenticeship Council (JAC) associated with IBEW. They want u to come in with the normal papers (who u are,where u live, etc) and they hire u...and direct u to an Master Electrician/Contractor

This information is stated on the site...and i know first hand experience of this because i have called roughly 43 contractors MattAmy Homes, Holley Electric. etc which they all say...we hire through the union...meaning i need to get into the union before i can get a job...not the other way around...which is what they have told me (the secretaries)

My question is

For the people that have taken this trade and followed it through IBEW how does it work?

how often they start registrations?

and what should i do now?

sorry man..i was just saying this cause this is how i got a job in my trade...i went to the union everyday and got brushed off so i just found myself a company that was willing to take me and after 1 month they signed me up thru the union..same thing went with a few of my friends that i got into plumbing...it was quick all i had to do was sign a paper. but electricians are a bit different i know u have to do 2 years of trade school before u even get to go on the field...good luck...

Well about the 2 year trade thing...i was told that there is like 3 months of time u get off from the contractor to do like semester shit...

I've seen the prospects of this job...Coffe Break at 8 am/driving about 3-5 hrs/1 hr lunch break/2 hrs of actual work

I figured this is the best job for me...the pay...and the effort but whats even better for me...is i can bring my laptop...and maybe work on a production

we need someone at our new place to hook up a working doorbell and porch lights (as our landlord can't seem bothered to arrange this for us). wanna do it?

usually you can do your apprenticeship two diff ways. either get hired as an apprentice with a company and do the part-time courses (like you said 3 months a year part time for like 4 years or something) or goto college/trade school for 2 years (i think most trade courses are 2 years). I'm starting Tool & Die making at George Brown in the fall. it's a 2 year course (4 semester).

with electricians its different...u have to go through the union first in order to get sign-up...the rest follows...mentioned before

lol i could prolly fix that...but funds r low and dont have any transportation...but Home Depot should be able to help...they give free Basic Electrical repair seminars...that should help u bigtime

My father works for the TTC and apparently they have apprenticeship programs available. The pay is pretty good. I work for a home builder...Losani Homes in Stoney Creek and I think they're taking part in OYAP.

You cant just become an indepedent licenced electrician and work for yourself? fucking hell... and people wonder why i always say we are a communist state.

you think im gonna trust u putting electricity into my house without any training or education on the matter? you think the workers health board would let u play with live wires when u have no training or experience or education? ur fucked up.. this isnt fuckin drywalling electricity is fuckin dangerous...you can be independent once u get ur license \..then u can work for yourself all you want. but till then u need education and training and experience...makes sense to me..its abt the safety of everyone..has nothing to do with communism...

P.S. Liquidchick thnx for the reply...in regards to OYAP...its kinda of escaping my intention because all it does really is get me my license...

but with IBEW i get benefits...gotta keep the teeth white and spine striaght jew kno

I'm a bus mechanic for the TTC and yes they hire in-house appretices BUT I've heard that they are gonna start hiring people off the street that have finished school..Now I have no idea how it works for electricians in the TTC but that may be an option for you to check out...

I think that it may work the same way for electricians. My dad keeps asking me to get my boyfriend to take the apprenticeship program. Last time he told me about it, he said they were looking for electricians. I just asked him about it right now. He said to go down to personnel down on Bathurst or call Local 2.

Thnx RobbieG n liquidchick for the advice i've seen the site and it seems pretty interesting...the hourly wages r between 18.75-27.75 an hr which is pretty good

What is discouraging tho is that they want u to have a DZ license...sigh...

But im calling them during business hrs tomorrow to see if its nesscessary

P.S Liquid chick - now there saying i should fax or email my resume...the advice ur pops said (tell him thnx btw ) about going down to the station...is faxing the resume ok?...or should i go for a meet n greet?

I would fax my resume to Human Resources which is on Bathurst and I would find out how to get in contact with Local 2 and give them a call to find out more about getting into the program. Hope this helps and best of luck...let me know how everything turns out.

Hmmm....When I was hired on (9 years ago ) I only had my G license & the TTC taught me to drive buses & they got me my CZ license...I also heard that when the TTC hires mechanics that there is an aptitude TTC test that you have to get %80 or better...ANyway check it out OR drop by the TTC employment office

Well i contacted someone at TTC regarding there apprenticeship course...and they want someone who has a DZ license

I asked if they would accept someone whos in the process of getting there DZ...and he said they dont

Well thnx liquid n rob for the advice but unfortunately it cant work out...but i'd like to give a sincere thnx
