any way YOU choose...arrange it in a way where u know where your tracks are is all. There is no proper way

I organize my music kind of by genre/sound so I know where to look while spinning. I guess if the majority of your records are trance, then organize them by more progressive/uplifting/psy/etc., etc.

I organize by rough mixing genre and within that, alphabetical order. Breaks and Prog together, Drum 'n' bass, and then other random stuff. Each of the three starts over again at A. It works alright so far. I don't really have enough records to make it a big deal yet.

My are in a random order... I just keep digging and searching till I find what I think will go with whats playing...

I have two big trance crates, one techno, and one prog. I keep the newest tracks along with my favorites towards the front. Simple.

i used to do it this way too.. but it can take entirely too long to find a good song and you can't remember EVERY song you own, so you end up missing out on some good mixes.

i found the best way to organize my records is by label. although, i tend to stick to the labels that i really love (anjunabeats, platipus, lost language, ministry of sound) so i don't have a hundred labels to organize. when you set up your records in this fashion, it makes it much easier to find the songs you're looking for.

we organize by key since most the records we have are prog/trance. the ones that aren't keyed yet are organized by genre in bins.

I also organise by key. Just helps with set progression and structure.

though my collection is a mess currently, everything is everywhere... i used and would recomend to anyone the following, as long asyou mix by key and whatnot...

first if you have half and half of house and trance that you wouldnt put in the same mix, keep them separated in different crates or whatever, it just makes it easier to not look at your DnB albums when looking for a good trance one

next, start by bpm, usually the slower at the start and faster at the end, but vise versa works just fine also.

then by key, of which i usethat harmonic mix guide which sorts it all out in 1a, 2a, blah blah....

then after you get all your records organised like this, picking your next track should be very fast, easy, and FUN!!

if you have no idea about harminc mixing goto:

thats the best way ive foud to do it thus far.

The short answer is: whatever works for you and helps you find the records you want quickest!

If you're a DJ, you've got two issues - how you organise your collection at home and how you pack your record box. Packing your box is the important bit because you've sometimes got to find the right tune at the right time fairly quickly. I mix by key so I organise my box by key, with tunes in 'C' at the front, tunes in 'Db' behind them, tunes in 'D' behind those and so on. I'm a piano player so I have my records in chromatic order starting from 'C', like the keys of a piano.

As for your collection at home, you just need to keep it tidy so that the women in your life (girlfriend, mother etc) don't start complaining. I keep mine in A-Z order by artist because I find that stuff's easier to find like that. Again, whatever works for you as long as you can find what you want when you want it (like when your mates come round and you want to play them that wicked tune you bought the other day).
