Why do many trance fans ignore the 'psychedelic' side?

The question is simple enough... with such a huge worldwide community of trance fans why do so few dip into the 'psychedelic' side? I use the word lightly because there is such a wide range of sound to be found - you can essentially tack on the prefix 'psy' to techno, progressive, house, breaks, chill-out, and other genres and will have some aspect of "psytrance" covered. With such a wide-range of sound and arguably some of the world's highest production standards, why is it ignored? Infected Mushroom and Shpongle may have broken through, and plenty of people remember Astral Projection... but there is so much more out there and it all seems to go un-noticed by the masses.

No need to tell me 'hey I like psy' cuz I know there's a lot of trance fans with cross-over tastes... the question is really why the myriad varieties of psychedelic trance aren't embraced on a *wider* scale?

Discuss...

Some psy stuff is really good, There's this psy trance outfit here called Nano records, I've listened to some of their stuff and it's quite good.

Btw. Does psy only come on cd's? I've never ever seen anyone play psychedelic trance on vinyl, and the psy sites i've seen offer only cd's... Mind you I haven't really gone out in search of psy tracks just something i've noticed, could be wrong though.

The psytrance scene is bigger than the trance scene here in Sweden..

Posted by Fresh Prince on Jul-13-2004 22:39:

Honestly, I don't like it

It may be that it's not as "catchy" as normal trance, it could be that a lot of the stuff isn't on vinyl, who knows.

Hello! In Mexico

Here in Mexico the psy-trance scene is really big. For me it's quite hard play trance tracks (worse if we talk about upligting...) in some parties beacause people is always asking for some psy-trance.
For most people here in Mexico the psy scene began some years later than in Europe, so a lot of producers like Infected Mushroon, Skazi, Sphongle, Kox Box, and much more found a good place to make live presentations with some regularity.
Also, there are many mexican psy-producers and labels, just ask if you'd like some info.
Personally, I'm waiting only for the moment when trance arise above psy...those gonna be good days...!!!!

Yes... Psy-trance comes on vinyl aswell...

I can garuntee that Astral Projection and DJ Guy Salama (to name a few) use vinyl and they spin purely psytrance...

I like it, actually going to see Astral Projection this weekend. I think that it gets thrown in with trance in general and thats MIGHT be why you don't hear much about it..

Yahel is mediocrity at its finest. It's not trippy; if i took it on 4 drops of acid i'd probably still yawn.

hehehe

Personaly, i cant stand psy, but i do actualy like yahel. well, depends, some of his stuff :P

Posted by TweeK on Jul-14-2004 00:39:

what is this psy trance you speak of?

J/k Astral Projection Rules Some trance is way to girlie so thats when Psy trance comes in to play

Posted by icedale on Jul-14-2004 00:42:

Yahel isn't that good.
There are way better producers in Psy Trance.
I don't like everything I hear. Yet, some of it is reaaaally nice
And I'm getting kinda bored of [regular] trance as well.

i just started listening to psy but it's very good! don't know of many producers/songs but 1200 Mics - Renaissance Superman is top seed! for some reason i just can't seem to find psy records anywhere, i've mostly seen it on cd's like someone else mentioned. if i knew more places to check i'd definitely have a nice collection of psy on vinyl

Posted by Psiweaver on Jul-14-2004 01:24:

psy trance is very good. i've heard some awesome psy trance sets.

Posted by mety333 on Jul-14-2004 01:25:

im not really into psychedelic. i have like 6 new psy tracks and i listen to them rarely.
i LOVE trance and thats how it will always be...
(i also like dance, house and club but trance is the best)

If there were more hybrids between psy and other trance, the bridge would be made easier to cross. J00F has provided some good precedent.

Who do I like? Juno Reactor. Obviously not strictly goa/psy, but that's why I like them (him? Ben Watkins, anyhoo). "Pistolero" and "Beyond The Infinite" are nothing short of damn good masterpieces when it comes to taking goa-psy elements and infusing them with new life.

A lot of the good Psychedelic Trance and GOA is way too complicated to hit the main stream but that's the way I like it, things become corrupt, over-run with controversy and cheese etc. look what happened to trance

Posted by XeQtOr on Jul-14-2004 07:40:

I LOVE psytrance.. Some of my favorite producers are: Astral Projection, Infected Mushroom, Astrix, Hallucinogen, Electric Universe... And the list goes on..

Posted by JulesPLees on Jul-14-2004 07:42:

Damn Hippies

love the psy...probably not as big as the clubby stuff for the same reasons a gourmet reasturant isnt as big as McDonalds...

Posted by Zombie0915 on Jul-14-2004 09:05:

There is this like, 3 day long psy festival on the 23rd up in the mountains like 4 hours away from me that I was thinking about going to, its gonna be full of hippies and psy and all sortsa weird mountain people, it seems to be really big up there and Ive always wanted to go to one of their parties, but the thing costs like 75 bux so im not sure if i can go. Trance in general is sooo much different then psy, thats why I think it doesnt get attention in some areas, but it others it gets all the attention and trance gets none, it depends on the preferences of the people who are around you. Over here trance in any form is pretty rare, but trance as many people here know it is on the rise in a big way. Psy has a following west of here, and east it is still all house and DnB. Trance definately has more appeal in populated areas it seems.

Yet 90% of you proceed to do just that. Answer his question instead.

Posted by biznology on Jul-14-2004 09:30:

psy is something i dont care much about.

it is what it is...yet if i need to get freaked out there are other avenues.

crappy repeating sounds do not do that for me.

and i dont think that shpongle is psy, more like decent EDM jam band music that has been incorporated|
