Bigpond Cable sucks the big one!

Haven't had the internet at home since Thursday night and the Telstra techs that came on Thursday said "oh, we're not sure how we can fix this"...I said "yeah that's great...what do I do now?"....they respond "umm...try calling on Monday to speak with someone about it"...

Can't believe this crap! Anywayz, someone came out this morning and fixed the problem as a follow up to the Thursday blunder!

It's amazing how dependant of the internet we can become. You feel 'disconnected' when you don't have it!

looks like its time to churn over to IINET.


they are offering FREE setup to bigpond customers.

I'm with Iinet also... experience hardly any downtime at all. And they have just increased download limits yet again Always a nice surprise.

Edit: we had Optus cable when we lived in a house.. and I would still have it now but Optus suck and won't let me have it connected to my apartment

working for an ISP i deal with telstra everyday, what can i say, they are wankers with no clue

edit: oh and soups, he has telstra cable, unless you have worked out someway to churn from coaxial cable to an adsl phoneline he wont be able to churn ;D

i love my cable.. switching back to adsl would be like switching back to dialup from adsl.. aint no way thats gonna happen!

but depending on what your download sources are, it wouldnt necessarily be affected.. plus download limits are better


im on the 1.5mbit plan with IINET. and whilst its 109.95 a month, its worth every cent for how much i get and where i get my stuff from

so thats nearly double what i pay for cable... slower than cable.... and who said anything about limits? i've never been capped.

really sounds like its worth the switch over!!

I can't get cable where I live

So I'm stuck with Bigpond ADSL.
It's actually fkn reliable (in year and a half only been of for half a day once), and good speeds too, compared to other providers.

good speeds obviously because any other provider the traffic goes through telstra to their own network then off to the net, with telstra it goes straight off to the net from them cutting out the network in between. anywhoo given the option i would always always choose cable over ADSL, (i have 1.5 adsl and optus cable atm in my house) , i am 90% connected to cable, use adsl as redundancy

i'm with westnet myself (adsl), and while i experienced a slight down time on saturday morning, i reckon it's great.

it was removed after iinet decided they wanted to rollout their own DSLAMs.

people on iinet can still churn away from iinet to a new isp, but you can't choose to churn to iinet anymore. if you want to signup for iinet, with or without an existing ADSL connection, the cheapest possible option is $89, where you BYO adsl modem.

personally, i love my telstra cable and wouldn't trade it off for adsl for any reason!

500KB/s+ is awesome!

for anyone locked into a contract with telstra at the moment, you can now break that contract without having to pay out the rest of your contract. refer here and here.

update: It turns out the reason my connection was dropping out was due to a corroded connector in the main pit just on the footpath in the street. I'm glad it's all sorted and that's all it was....now back to 'hopefully' problem free cable.

Just to add, cable is way faster than adsl as most adsl providers have shocking contention ratios which means you have to fight for bandwidth with other users.

Thanks everyone for your concerns, cable all the way baby! (just hate having problems that last more than a day or so)

PS. Can't get ADSL at all due to exchange situated to far from the residence. Can't get Optus Cable due to no overhead power lines. Telstra cable is the only method of getting connected to the internet in my area. Bullshit I know!

hehe yeh my bad, $39 if you're churning to iinet. one day iinet is in with churn, next day they're out then back in again haha

roughly 5kms.....too many line errors when Telstra does the provisioning for the ADSL.

Who ever said they would swap Cable for ADSL? Because I dont think anyone did.
ADSL sucks compared to cable.

ANd no wonder Christos the Telstra guys had no idea. It was a corroded cable under the ground on your footpath! You know that's the first thing that comes to mind whenever my internet goes down!

So as much as i hate telstra, i dont think they can be blamed for that. I mean seriously.

there was a big fuckup at telstra recently. Somehow their system for checking distance from the exchange was goign haywire, people who were 6-7km's away from the exchange were getting accepted. Hence their was heaps of customers who couldnt work out what the problem with their line was (and us). We explored every option from new modems to different routes on our side of things only for telstra to turn around and say 'oops, our bad'

you guys realise that ADSL kicks the crap out of cable, but not in australia, thanks to the fucked up plans they give us.

ADSL is actually faster @ 10mbit speeds, because it's not shared with anyone else. cable is shared with all other users...

but as it stands, cable is still heaps better than adsl here

and that really shows how far behind we are in the swing of things
