Question about this gig

I'm going to be playing at my college coming up. My school has this after hours club on campus that goes until 2ish. This place normally has various things going on like comedy, hip hop djs, and other bands. They have yet to have any house/trance djs play yet.

I spoke with the manager and she is open to having djs of other genres come and play. They are having this welcoming party for the new freshmen during their first week. I have the impression that I'm going to want to play more housey and vocaly stuff so that it would reach out to more people as opposed to playing hardcore trance which some might not like and leave.

This could become a regular thing at this club so I want to keep as many people there as possible. I don't want to play cheesy mainstream tracks but I want to keep it interesting and keep people there. What would you guys recommend for this kind of situation?

Thanks for your advice!

Commercial vocally/funky house, R&B/hip hop, and party
or a name Dj (thats known outside of the underground- ) the equivalent of judge jules or something in the uk)

That is from experience in the uk. As the us is even worse for acceptance to dancey stuff keep it straight down the line happy girly commercial or it will die on its ass
the only genre you can get away with more and unknown stuff is house.
If you want to spin trancey stuff- promote it well in advance ao people know what to expect. That way you can get the right people in for that genre

Students can be very fickle and picky, and the music isnt the primary reason they will be there if you catch my drift...

They only trance that I'd recommend playing is classic oakenfold/van dyk bangers from 98-99. Honestly trance has been wack since then so you don't have anything to worry about.

Stick to house... I'm going to try spinning prog house, tech house, and a touch of trance/ prog trance at my school's local bars/clubs in the fall... I feel that as long as the records are hot and the alcohol is flowing (the most important part) than people will have a great time.

Above all, your job is to be the DJ first, and House/Trance Evangelist second. But you must not forget to wear the promoter's hat also. So, you'll need to get every friend you can find that is into House and Trance to show up. Every friend needs to reach out and find other friends that like the music also. Do Flyers, emails, smoke signals, anything and everything to promote your gigs.

If you have a crowd of people that like the music, their energy will be contageous. Then, just relax and do what you love.

Cheers...
