Chicane News

Hey everyone,

Just thought i would let you know what is happening with Chicane.
He is going to have a new album out very soon!

News from the Official Chicane website:

june '04 update

unfortunately, the long awaited new single & 3rd album from chicane has had to be postponed until the autumn of this year... we will post the full track listings for both of these releases as soon as they are confirmed from chicane central.

Great news!

So what can we expect from Chicane's new album?

"I'd like to do even more song-based material, less instrumental stuff. I'd love to work with Trevor Horn or Brian Eno. And vocally, I'd go for someone folky like Tori Amos or Suzanne Vega."

- Nick Bracegirdle (Chicane)

Nick hasn't been doing too many shows lately, so i guess he has been busy with the album. I hope there are some more Chicane fans out there who are looking forward to this as much as me!

Is the album going to be downtempo or chill trance? Anyone know?

Posted by A.J. on Jul-23-2004 15:30:

Expect chilled, melodic trance, with a fair few vocal tracks.

I doubt it will be downtempo.

Posted by CortexBomb on Jul-23-2004 15:33:

Nick is reworking the album for release, but based on the promo copy it's very poppy with some of his chill elements, and even a Finished Symphony inspired 'Empires' as the final cut.

Overall, most Chicane fans will find something to like in it, but reactions were pretty down on it across the board; most say that it is decent, but significantly below the precedents set by FFTMC and BTS.

hmmmmm, that's not what i wanted to hear

Can you give me any links to reviews?????

the next single will be the UK release of 'locking down'

I got a remix he did of Enigma fairly recently that is fantastic, kind of a pain to mix, but doable for sure.

that sucks

Posted by CortexBomb on Jul-23-2004 15:53:

I admit being disappointed by the album as well.

Chicane was the first Trance style artist that I really got into, and I love almost all of his older BTS and prior material. His style is distinctive, yet still has that Chilled Trance aspect to it that makes it enjoyable.

I think the new album still sounds like it has aspects of the old Chicane, but he's clearly going in a different direction, and taking the next step toward pop that BTS already represented to diehard fans of FFTMC.

The new album is almost all vocal tracks, most of them are quite short, and they sound very radio friendly. There are hints of ambience along the way: Arizona Part 2, Empires, In Praise of the Sun, but unfortunately most of the album sounds more like his Cher productions than the old Chicane sound.

I don't think there's anything wrong with new directions for artists, but I have to say that judging by the initial reactions from most people on the boards, and my own, that Nick is going to lose many of his old fans with the new record.

Of course, a lot of this could be saved if he would do some Disco Citizens reworks, but so far he hasn't indicated that he has any desire to do that, and in interviews seems intent on distancing himself from his old dance music oriented image.

The remixes that came out for Locking Down and Love on the Run were both so-so for my tastes, but I do think that with the proper remixing (and removing of vocals in some cases) they could become much better tracks.

Chicane and Eno would be awesome.

There's been so much of a time lag, hasn't there? Must be frustrating for Nick

every one of his albums has been about 4yrs apart, this is no different. Behind the Sun was released in 2000 and this will be in 2004, he's been in the business forever, he knows how it is i'm sure.

I thought Easy to Assemble was released earlier this year. Odd.

I do agree that it's subpar for Chicane - I fell in love with Behind the Sun, and Far From the Maddening Crowds was great as well.

However, I agree there is a lot of ... crap, I guess, on this one. Empires is a great track, and I do like a few of the others. For the first time ever though, I'll be hitting "next track" on a Chicane CD. Sad.

Hopefully the next one that comes out will be more classic Chicane.

Yes, true, and I was also referring to the time between the "promo" release and the official release of the album. This didn't happen with Behind the Sun did it? Yah I guess it's just his comfy pace of working...

Why does (almost) everyone who talks about "Empires" compare it to Hybrid's "Finished Symphony"? Oooh I have an idea

Posted by A.J. on Jul-24-2004 12:42:

Dammit, i was too lazy to search, so i didn't realise there was another thread already. It's HERE in case you missed it like me.

I have only heard Love On The Run and In Praise Of The Sun, but i like both of them.

Love On The Run is so-so (Is it Bryan Adams on vocals again? souns like him)

In Praise Of The Sun is great! Really nice music to chill to.

From reading reviews, it appears that there are plenty of vocal tracks, as Nick moves towards more "songs" rather than dance tracks,

Some remixes from Disco Citizens, Solar Stone and Thrillseekers please Nick!

Posted by CortexBomb on Jul-25-2004 03:42:

In Praise of the Sun is a very nice track indeed, it's surprising that it's on this album though since it was originally released at least 2-3 years ago as "Mr. Jonathan presents Espiritu - In Praise of the Sun" and had a large number of remixes then including a French language vocal version.

It doesn't really seem to fit overly well with the shorter vocal tracks that dominate the album, but who am I to complain? A good track is a good track, regardless of age or companions

Chicane is a great DJ, but normally i really wouldn't think of going to one his sets...it just seems to mello. BUT ever since i heard this: Chicane-Live_From_Palladium-(01-22-00.mp3 a long time ago that all changed. I have to say this has to be one of my top 10 live sets i heard ever!

Posted by PulseFusion on Jul-25-2004 07:47:

to say the least, chicane was what brought me to trance in the first place and his older stuff is definitely classic material. to be honest, his recent stuff on the whole is pure pop shit. to think that such a talented artist as chicane has sold out disappoints me. to go from having FFTMC & BTS locked into my discman for months at a time with never any 'next track's to me not even listening to whtever his latest album was for much more that one listen through skipping every other track is in my eyes appalling...

bring back the old chicane dammit!!

That's just the promo release which got out with a limited number of copies and got leaked to the mp3 scene ages before it should have. Most likely the official release will be slightly different with some tracks reworked and 2 new productions as well.. but nothing is sure until it has come out.
