JL - Wicked Storm (original mix)

Just something for you to enjoy (hopefully)

Made in about 3 weeks, using FLStudio 4.0, Spectrasonic Atmosphere, Superwave, Triangle II, Z3ta +, and Waves mastering plugins.

Mixing and mastering mainly done on my Sennheiser 280 PRO headphones...

Basically, imagine sitting on your porch and watching a storm pass by and destroying everything in its path while listening

i love the composition in the beginning.. but once the kick comes in i dont like it much at all.. i would of made the entire track classical since that intro was so cool.. but that's just me

the main lead sounds pretty good for software.. but the general mastering is really weird.. the kick and bass is pretty flat and I dont care much for the hi-hat with (what seems like) a turned up attack

curious.. none of the programs you meantioned are capable of such a nice piano.. so what did you use for that?

Yummy production... I really really like this track a lot. It seems a bit lost early in the track (until about 4 minutes that is), and I wasn't a huge fan of the soft melody with the hard bass, but after reaching the massive energy driving melody later in the track... I'M IN LOVE!!! I love the driving melody... it reminds me a lot of a Flutlicht production (whom I miss dearly).

i love the main part of the tune, with that plucky sound with that amazing pitch lfo on it (or whatever it is) i dont like the break much, its nice, but the notes are a bit to scattered for my taste, its hard to know whats going on, perhaps a bassline here would help. the section between 3:09 and about 4:30 is flawless in my eyes, i love it. but i would love to hear the whole track based around that. i think the rest of the track lets it down, but that part is just gorgeous. i would love to remix just that part on its own, could you send me a wav of the main riff with that oscilation plucky synth? and maybe a simple midi? would love to have a go at remixing just that part.

Posted by Mike_Foyle on Jul-25-2004 12:20:

the piano sounds exactly like the wilton piano, with some reverb and delay, and treble, am i right?

Posted by J.L. on Jul-25-2004 12:49:

thanks alanzo for the detailed critique

I also forgot to mention what I used for the piano... which is nothing more than a simple freebie synth called mda Piano along with some reverb and EQing

Glad it sounds like some good ole Flutlicht to you Stories... I always loved their productions...

Mike, the plucky sound is just a plucked sample with some added LFO, pitch tuning, and detune...

PM me with what parts you want (MIDI, samples, etc...) and I'll send it t you.. Oh.. and sorry you are wrong with the piano

thanks for the feedback

i really like the classical intro... but after the kick come's in i don't really like it.. to tired to give any further comments...

Posted by DJ_LOOPer on Jul-25-2004 20:48:

I don't know what to say! Melody is nice, but construction of track is wrong! I don't know how to explain this! And quality is not so good as it can be!!! Whatever, good work!!!

I think the problem with this is that you simply have too many ideas. I like the opening (even with the kick I still dig it). I think there is simply too much stuff going on for this to be your normal trance track, you have to simplify. Maybe you could take some of these ideas and make 2 or 3 songs (or call them remixes of this one track if you think they are too similar to be called different songs). You have some really great sounds going on but it is all over the map.

Posted by sooper on Jul-25-2004 21:39:

Hi.. this is a pretty good song..

I like the pads & piano a lot. I think it could use a different kick, one that is a little less punchy, and I'm not sure I like the oscillation on the main melody.. it makes it sound a little out of tune.

There is a lot of intensity and drive in your song - good stuff!

Yeah!! This is that, what i was talking about..

thanks all you guys for your opinions... dbl, looper, auujay, sooper

I can see and agree withy our points about too many ideas being put into one song... and I think that is a valid point...

One thing I am trying to do is innovate from the typical trance sound and I usually want to try a lot of different things and put them in a track...

I have a question however... Do you think that if the arrangement and flow of the track was better, would the track not sound as much "all over the place?" Is the only solution to this to not have so many elements?? ... I do want to make some different trance from the typical one-liner lead synth into something more evolving, and is there a way to do this and still have everything flow?

Thanks again for all your comments

Like others said, definalty expand on that intro. Its a great start and I know that once you're in that creative vibe you can keep going and going.

I actually like the kicks and how they come in and especially all those sfx percusions in the bg, but the track doesnt really do it for me. It sounds cheesy at times, then sometimes sounds pretty good. Don't get me wrong, its pro, but doesnt live up to the amazing intro.

Posted by TOR on Jul-26-2004 11:44:

wow, what an amazing melody and synth about 5 minutes into the track..

that said, the mix needs some work.. sounds overcompressed to me, which reduces the power of the track, even though the kick is banging.

for the rest i agree with auujay.. plenty of good ideas, but too much for one track.

would like to have a midi though, some great melodies in there i'd like to play around with

Posted by Tilo on Jul-26-2004 12:17:

really like the intro just the beat comes to "early"
if you know what I mean.
The Synth in the background at around 2:00 is really driving(I like it!) and the main Melody is just awesome.

sorry for bumping my own thread heh...

but thanks for those Euler, TOR, and Tilo for your comments

and also if anyone wants to play around with any of the melodies... you can use these midis

thanks!

Wow. I like this track a lot. Nice work.

Posted by Sunquest on Jul-30-2004 02:16:

Wink

beautifal intro
all good quality sounds
song is very summer at first, relaxing melody, then its pumping
i think only thing u gotta fix is the compression on the kick and beats, it goes in too deep i cant explain :S
but its great stuff,
keep it up mm8
peace out

Really nice tune! The mastering is slightly weird, I love the deep bass sound but if was just a little more present then that would totally rock.

I don't agree with the others about there being too many elements, I just really enjoyed listening to all the parts come in. The hi hat sounds cool! I like the way it anticipates the kick.

Cool wobbly synth. Excellent melody at 5:00. If the mixing was fixed up then I reckon at 5:40 you've got yourself a killer dancefloor moment.

Oh yeah, and I'm glad that kick drum isn't too loud; I'm really hungover and a massive kick wouldn't have been too good for me today...

Great work!

my remix of this track is done.. I didn't use the main lead/melody becuase I didn't really like it much.. however, I did expand on the intro of the original becuase that was my favorite part

It's a bit short and is definitly not "dance-able" but is mixable..

JL - Wicked Storm (Armana Remix)
Length: 4min 3sec
Bitrate: 192Kbps
Production Time: about 8 hours stretched over 2 days

Posted by J.L. on Aug-09-2004 16:40:

wow, this is sounding quite cool heh. I like how you decided to focus on one part of the track and develop it and add your own ideas...

However, my main complaint is that it's too short!!!

Anyways, i think you should post a new thread about it and i'll close this thread

I tried to put in the main lead after the piano part but it just didn't sound right.. If I had put the piano part first like you did it may of been a bit easier to bring in the main lead... but I couldn't get your lead to "in my own way".. meaning it would of just been the same rythem/melody as the original.. which would of been a little lame..

but like I said.. I didn't really like the main lead much anyway and that the piano part was my favorite..

I'll post a thread for this track, if you like
