Daft Punk Pump sound

Does anyone know how to achieve the pumping sound the drums make on most daft punk records (thomas bangalter always does the same with his other productions). I know its to do with heavy compression, but no matter how much i try i can't seem to find the right setting on the right drum sample. Please help!!

Thanks,
Andy

my bet goes on a sidechain compressor

I think I know what you're talking about. Just basically take the kick of your choice and cut all frequencies above ~150Hz. Then, you're right, heavy compression for everything else.

that's pretty funny

I have a question that might have been answered already by Vizay a couple of posts above.

I bet quite a bunch of you have heard Eric Prydz' remix of Daft Punk's "Call on Me" (hopefully that's the title). It sounds like the whole track is sucked into some kind of vacuum while the kick drum is on. My own guess was that it was made with some kind of sidechaining, that gated away all the other instruments while the kick was on. Perhaps that's also the effect used by Daft Punk in their original tracks, although I haven't ever heard any.

Posted by phreneticangel on Jul-29-2004 14:13:

That was the track i most what to produce the sound from, the Eric Pryde remix of Call On Me by DJ Falcon & Thomas Bangalter (one half of Daft Punk)

Posted by BetaFactory on Jul-29-2004 16:23:

Right, then I think almost for sure that it is sidechained compression, which cuts out all other sounds while the kick is heard. In my own ears it sounds well on normal speakers, but when I listen to that track using headphones it almost makes my brain explode. Weird. Perhaps my brain is sidechained as well...

It's not because you don't like them that it's necessarily bad.

It think Daft Punk could easily teach you a thing or... hundred when it comes to production skills.

well obviously they might be able to teach us all a few things.. they are "pro".. but they're not even trance and I stand by my "daft punk sux" comment

anyone who disagrees can just eat me and/or move on with your life

what about 'cosmos - take me with you', this tune is also by thomas bangalter and you cannot deny its hot.

I ok first off side chaining only reduces the sound of one source when a master source is set and playing...its also used in radio and tv boradcasting...like on the radio when the annoucer talks on the mic and the music gets lower, but then when they stop it gets louder.
So you guys are talking about about sidechaining like it does some sort of filter trick..all it does it play with volumes. i'm pretty sure but haven't listen to that version you are talking about very well, but if it includes daft punk then you are sure to know that it's got to be filter. also you said something about sucking like a vaccume..could be phaser effect.

around the world owns alot of ASOT trance tunes from these days.

just because something has no supersaw does not mean that it sucks, it's all about creativity and how you use and combine fresh sounds.

The composer of the remix was Eric Prydz. Personally I wouldn't say it is a phaser effect, and I still stick to it being nothing more than some kind of volume gate. But that's only a guess, of course. The vacuum feeling that I got I also get when a central element of a track I listen to with headphones (e.g. a dominant open hihat) pans 100% left and 100% right without any mercy.

Posted by Limit on Jul-31-2004 17:38:

well I don't know cause I really didn't hear the track..but it sounded like a phaser to me...but I could and probably am wrong until I listen to the track.

Posted by Thomas Nobones on Jul-31-2004 20:36:

Just my two cents: I hate this technique, it gives me a headache. It just sounds to me like people who don't know how to use compression, even though I know people like daft punk know exactly how to use it.

Posted by Limit on Jul-31-2004 21:37:

ok now from that comment i understand what is goign on in the track. It that really heavy pumping sound.

Posted by wrzonance on Aug-01-2004 06:38:

just work your filter, make it harder then compress it better than mix it stronger?

that advice enough?

daft punk was great when I was 14 and went to crap highschool dances...

Cool, then we're at least two. In some way it has its charm, but listening to it for too long might end you up all dizzy in the head.
