noob dj

k lemme start out by saying I know absolutely nothing about DJing... So how hard is it to learn? Do you watch videos or do u get lessons or what? I barely even know any of the terms and im on a limited budget (im 16...).

I went to guitarcenter and looked at some of their stuff. The guy there suggested I get to Numark Axis 9's with a behringer vx700 for $975. Looked nice, but Thats really expensive. I know Guitarcenter also offers TT-200 (vinyl) for $199 which would be cheaper than $399 each for Axis 9's. I've heard Behringer VX300 is good to start off with.. So what is the best for starting off and on a budget Cd's, or vinyl? I know nothing And what is good equipment to get.

Oh yea forgot to add at a local music store they were selling a turntable that is new that they could sell.. I think it was American Audio TT-200MK I know it was american audio but can't remember the model #.

first whats your budget??
if you can save up for technics

used Technics mk2s or m3ds would be your best choice for starting on a budget
or
you can pricematch at Guitarcenter and get Mk5s

from there you need to choose cartridges, Shure Whitelabels, Ortofons etc

what kind of music are you gonna play ?
electronica you dont really need a quick crossfader
imo i'd get a pcv 275 about 500$ (i think)
or you could go on a major budget and get that behringer djx 700 about 250$

then you need good headphones... imo sennheiser hd 280 pros...

well thats my quick advice... if you wanna start with good equipment then you're looking at maybe 1200$ or more.. probably.

I second that. Got them on Amazon for 79 bux. Best bang for yer buck.

Posted by beats and beeps on Jul-28-2004 02:39:

the hd 280 pros are great phones, excellent phones, but if i were you i wouldnt worry about getting a pair quite yet.

Use all the money you get to go twords a mixer, and turntables, or digital turntables (cdjs).

Headphones are very important, but if you have a setup you CAN use crappy headphones (like the ones you get with cd players) to mix, until you have the money for better ones. However having a kickass pair of phones with no equipment is just wasting time...

Posted by yayo on Jul-28-2004 02:40:

i'd like to keep it under 500 bucks... I know I could upgrade if I got into it... but then again I dont want really shitty stuff. I just find it hard to spend 1,000 off the bat for something I don't even know if I will like/be good at/be able to learn you know?

Music will be trance/techno all that good stuff

could someone give me a good starting setup with prices.. I looked at turntables.com or something like that and they had some interesting stuff there. Would it be best to buy online or goto like guitarcenter?

wow your 16? im 14 and the day i turn 15 im getting a job an saving up (14 is a legal age to work but no one considers you untill your 15) but the thing is, is that i was considering cds instead of vinyl due to costs...

Posted by yayo on Jul-28-2004 03:33:

I have a job but im only making around 100 a week (which will be less once I start school on august 12) and half of that goes into my bank account for my car. rest Im going to save up for DJ equipment I have like 200 bucks atm.

Do yourself a favor, save up and get technics. I've been waiting to spin since before I was 16, but I was patient and waited until I had a lot of cash saved up for techs (I only just bought mine a few months ago, and I just turned 18).

If you're really serious about mixing, lower end decks simply wont cut it. You'll be wanting to upgrade bad, and since you can't really sell lower end turntables for anywhere close to their original price, you're going to be back on square 1.

If you do buy technics and decide you don't want to mix any more, you can sell them for very close to their original price, especially if you've taken good care of them. Be patient and save up.

Posted by trancintaiwan on Jul-28-2004 04:09:

ok, plain and simple. if your gonna get tables get technics, not because they're soooo much better than the numarks or stantons or whatever, its because the resale value is so fucking high. even if u drop 600 on 2 technics, u can still sell them for 600 in another year if you don't like spinning. heck i got 2 1200-m3d's for 550. add another 200-300 dollar mixer that's 800-900. remember, there's a special friend called ebay

Posted by Tenzospy on Jul-28-2004 04:09:

or not... his bandwith is maxed out... I didnt do that did I? havnt sent him a om yet but..

i was thinking that too because i have a huge cd/mp3 library and i was thinking i could start with cds because of that reson but laitly i have been thinking of vinyl...

Posted by yayo on Jul-28-2004 04:16:

I know I can get TT-200's for vinyl which would be cheaper to start off but then you have to buy vinyl and I know I can get any songs off the internet.. but idk.

how are you suppose to learn to DJ anyways

HomeMix DJ turntables... sounds like a cheap brand

Posted by Dzokayi on Jul-28-2004 04:31:

stop!!!

Put your wallet back in your pocket. Take a couple of CDs full of the type of music you're interested in spinning. Go back to Guitar Center and ask the salesperson to give you a quick overview of the basics. Spend lots of time there. Play with all of the equipment - from the most expensive to the entry level. Make notes of what features you like and dislike. Hit the manufacturer websites and read up on what you missed. Go back to Guitar Center and try those features. Spend lots of time playing with everything. Come back here and ask questions. Keep saving your $.

CD's are a steeper initial investment (good CD turntables like Pioneer CDJ-800's or CDJ-1000's) are pretty expensive (the 800's are $700-800 each, and the 1000's are about a grand each), but let me tell you, records are as addictive as crack and twice as expensive. If you get vinyl TT's be prepared to be spending every penny you earn on that wax. CD's are only about $1-2 each, as opposed to $10 a pop for records.

Posted by cryo on Jul-28-2004 04:34:

really just save up and get techs straight off the bat.
i just completed my setup
2x cdj 100s, vestax pmc170a, 2 mk5s w/ Whitelabels and hd 280s

ill probably upgrade my mixer after i get outta debt to my parents 400$ for one of the techs..

its taken me about 3yrs, worked only once last summer to get to my setup. my regrets was that i bought American DJ pro dj3 cdplayers when i should have bought cdj 100s off the bat.
for the cans i had sony mdr v500s which were o.k. until i got my hd 280s which own them.

just save up and get used off ebay, just shop carefully.

yup and thats why im hesitant...

Posted by cryo on Jul-28-2004 04:39:

you can pricematch cdj 800s at guitarcenter for 500$

use froogle

Posted by DannyO on Jul-28-2004 04:55:

For Decks, I HIGHLY recommend second hand Techs, you can sometimes get them at such a good price that you could use them for a year then sell them for abit more.

CDJ, I wouldn't go lower than the CDJ-100s, but if I could would go for the 800s.

Mixer, upto you, VMX300 would be good to start out with, until you got the money for a DJM or A&H or the like.

As for learning, the best thing is to look up similar threads on hear, plus watch some club videos of DJs, and even the turntablism vids, but if you want to learn it, then you will, I didn't have anyone teach me, never saw how it worked, and never read about anything, but I figured it out myself and am glad I learnt it the way I did.
