My bike was stolen!!

It's exactly 3 months to the day since I bought my mountain bike and it was stolen last night. I had it in the trunk of my car, which was parked in the driveway. Someone had picked the lock (no visible damage to the car), opened the trunk and made off with my bike. What's driving me insane is that I was sleeping no more than 10m away from this while it was happening.

Just got off the phone with a cop and he's like, "if we find a bad guy riding a bike at 1AM, we'll check the serial number against yours and get back to you if that's the case." YEAH, RIGHT!!!

You try to have an optimistic outlook on life and think that the world is essentially a good place but shit like this happens and then reality sets in. Oh well... that's life, ain't it? $700 bye bye!!! Sorry about another non music related thread but I just wanted to remind all of you to be mindful of your valuables. And don�t ever leave anything in your car especially when the alarm is broken. Thieves always strike when you least expect it.

dude that sux....im sorry to hear that! my bike is my transportaion around the city so i know how shitty it is to have it stolen from you...

Weirdest thing ever tho. Why would they bother to pick your trunk lock and steal your bike. I think they knew you had a nice one and they were staking out the place.

Yup, that's what i told him. I'm betting someone had spent some time checking it out and waited till last night to jack it. ..

hmm according to the other thread, d!abolic is the one that took it (or so hes pretending). Either way, we should take it like he did and find him and kick the crap out of him and beat him with the bike (without ruining it of course)

It would kill 2 birds with one stone! Get your bike back, and get rid of him and the lame useless threads!

That's a tough one to take Ben. Sorry about the bad luck. It seems bike theft is really spiking lately in the GTA. My co-worker just had his bike stolen as well....right in front of a busy theatre, locked and all.

One small not of consolation...a bit late for you but...I read in the star that the cops are launching a bike theft sweep with plain clothes officers setting "bike traps" where they stake out planted unlocked bikes and wait for the baddies to come.....hope they catch a few atleast.

stealing the unlocked ones is one thing. more than baddies are tempted that way. its the pros with the chair cutters and lock pickers that need to be stopped.

they have to plant those sorts of bikes around everywhere.

Ben! That sucks! Why do shitty things happen to good people? Doesn't seem fair does it?

Is there no insurance recourse for you here? I suppose your premium would go up a little, but you should still be able to claim the stolen goods... especially something like a bike, I mean some punks stealing change and CDs are on thing, but this is pretty expensive!

Either way, it sucks, and I'm willing to bet that Margs was right, they were probably watching and saw you put it in there. People suck.

I heard anything that is "in" the car but not "attached" comes
under House Insurance. So maybe check that...

I've had my $5 piece of crap for 5 years. Its faster than most bikes and it gets me to exactly where I want to. Being stolen? prob not, it looks like a hunk of rust.

As long as you maintain the breaks, and the chain it'll be just like new.

Damn, Ben that just sucks ass. Margie is right that we are the world's capital for most stolen bikes. I think everyone has a stolen bike story one time or another.
It just doesnt make sense to get a good bike anymore in this city, the only good choice is to get a cheap bike.
If you get another soon and decide to go riding again, PM as I just got back into mountain biking again.

Since the car was in your driveway, it could be covered under your home-owners/contents insurance.

This would be a better avenue to recover funds as it will have a lesser impact on the insurance premium (as opposed to claiming it on the auto insurance).

Look into it.

yeah but ben actually uses his bike for mountains and trails and stuff, you can't go on that stuff with a hunk of rust, you need a semi-good bike for that to be safe on it.

I have already looked into claiming under my homeowner�s insurance. Unfortunately, the deductible is $500 on the policy and I'm not about to let the premiums go up for claiming around $200. It's just not worth the trouble.

You're right Margs, I did use my bike for actual mountain biking trails. I don't think a $5 hunk of rust would have made it down steep inclines scattered with rocks the size of watermelons in one piece. My bike was actually $550 with about $150 worth of upgrades. But it pales in comparison to the $5000 bikes some of my friends have.

Anywayz, what's gone is gone. I know leaving the bike in my car wasn't a smart move even though I thought it was a safe neighborhood (not anymore.) I refuse to be a victim and I'll be back on those trails next year with an even better bike. A big thank you to everyone for the support. It's made the whole ordeal a lot more bearable.

I'd also like to know this. But owning a $5 000 bike in Toronto isn't exactly the best idea. Maybe if you like throwing $5 000 away.

More expensive bike usually means more features and decorations. I doubt its any "stronger" than a bike a fifth of the price.

My hunk of rust takes beatings everyday, and has been for 5 years since I've been using it to go to school for 5 years. Bikes are strong; shocks, extra 15 gears, pretty blue metallic colours are expensive.
