Yes, some people are this pathetic!!

So some woman calls today and complains about a sub. She said it "didnt taste right" so i told her to bring it back and wed make a new one. So she brings it in and then asks for an entirly different sub. Ok fine, ill do that. But when i asked what was wrong with it she said "i guess i dont really like steak"... so should i be paying for her indecision? I gave her the sub anyways but ive instituted a new rule that if we replace a sub, we either refund the money or make the same sub again. (i think thats fair).

But here is the kicker.

One of my staff swore she saw her take a cookie without paying. So i checked the camera and sure enough shes on film stealing a cookie and walking out. The dumb biatch was stupid enough to call from her house and leave her number on call display when she complained the first time and then steal a cookie in full view of the camera. She doesnt know it yet but shes been banned from my store and if she ever answers the phone i'll be asking for my $1,29 or threaten to call the police. The nerve of some people!

I say why not just stone her like in the old days
BUt you should have called the police theft is theft she should learn her leson she didn't only take you for a cookie she took you for a whole sub as well

Posted by Jayx1 on Aug-01-2004 20:22:

yes but the sub was willfully replaced. However the cookie was clearly theft. We have decided that if we cant get a hold of her to allow her the chance to come and pay for the cookie we will call the police. I am willing to spend money on customers if they have a valid complaint which is why i will not tolerate ANY theft.

Posted by DeE420 on Aug-01-2004 21:55:

that sucks man. some people just have NO integrity. i work in a friggin DOLLAR store (yes, everything is a dollar) and i see people stealing from the place all the time!! i also get people complaining about the prices......EVERYTHING IS A FRIGGIN DOLLAR! like, what the hell?! people are just dumb and ignorant..... if it were me, i'd just leave her alone till she came back into the store, and then kick her out. But i totally understand your actions.

I've been in the same situation...and I think your being more than fare.
Customers.....shish...you can't live with them...but sometimes you can certainly live without them.

Do what you gotta do...it's your business and you gotta protect it. Bad enough you gotta pay the hst and other stuff which you practically never benefit from at all. Not to mention the quarterly trips to the accountants...that just bites

Jayx1, I know exactly how you feel. When I was in high school I was a manager at this sub place. People would always come in and do the same exact shit. We also had people who ordered thier food to go, and they'd call us when they got home saying that either their order was wrong or that sandwiches were missing. But when we asked them to bring the sandwiches in for exchange, they had convieniently forgotten them but were in a "real big hurry" to get home.

Dishonest people can all go to hell if you ask me What goes around comes around.

Ive set out new rules now to avoid this. If they dont like it too bad.

Rule: You must bring your sub back and exchange it for either the same type of sub or a refund. You cannot exchange for another type of sub. Failure to bring the sub back will result in not getting a replacement.

I think thats more than fair.

this should have been set out in the very beginning!

I would defently report it to the police, who knows, perhaps she would learn a lesson.

So you'll give em their money back or make the same sub, but not a different sub? You DO realize that they can just use that money to BUY a different sub?

I did but at that point theres nothing i can do. If they want to be so cheeky then theres only so far you can go really short of throwing them out of your store. (which i wouldnt unless they stole)

As for the rule... my place is 2 weeks old so its a learning experience which is why ive just instituted this rule now.

Not only that, but from a financial standpoint, it's not the best policy. How about "no refunds, exchange" (for same or less $$$, or they make up the difference on a more expensive sub).

Presumably (lol) he's turning a profit on those subs, right? So isn't it better to give someone another sub worth the same $$$ or less than to give them a refund? ie. if the sub costs $3 to make and it's sold it for $5, why not give them another $3 sub instead of a $5 refund

forget "sticking it" to dumb customers...they're not worth the effort...just think about your bottom line

Posted by Jayx1 on Aug-03-2004 12:07:

No because this means that they think that they can get away with it next time.

Yesterday for example i had a guy come in and complained about everything all the way through the order and was giving everyone a hard time. (nothing was wrong btw) At the end he asked for a 50% off card, the kind we give to people when we truely do screw up. The very fact that he knew about this card and asked for one told me that he was a professional complainer and thus he got nothing.

Im all for correcting a mistake but im not going to get taken by scam artists. And it seems that i have at least one in my store per day.

Posted by MarkT on Aug-04-2004 22:41:

but what are they "getting away with"? If you have repeat abusers...just don't serve them. Seriously, it must happen seldom enough that you'd get to know the person if they kept doing it.

You're under no legal obligation to serve anyone and have the right to refuse anyone's business (so long as there is no evidence of discrimination based on Charter protected freedoms).

The guy asking for the discount card is a seperate matter entirely...he stands to personally gain something by saving money. I see your frustration with someone exchanging a sub simply because they don't like it...but they really aren't *gaining* anything (other than pissing you off). So give them a sub instead of their money and cut your losses...they try to do it again, say no. They'll threaten to never come back. Good, because those type of customers cost you money. At least cut that loss the first or second time around before you ban them.
