What makes you get worse when mixing?

Was wondering what makes you get worse while DJin then, as in maybe drinking or smoking pot, feeling ill, tired, not in the mood???, post the top 3 or so things that make you get worse, I ain't talking about crap equipment or anything.

mine:
1. HEAT, My room is always hot and when I DJ it gets hotter from all the equipment, it really does mess me up, and I hate it.
2. TIRED, some people do seem to get abit better for some reason, but for me, I just can't get into the music, so my feeling of the set isn't great, but I have to be really tired.
3. MAD, if something has pissed me off, I just can't get into the set, when I'm really mad, I can listen to a good set for about 30 minutes then I'll be back into the music.

EDIT: just thought, the top 3 things that make me DJ my best is:
1. HAPPY, feeling good and if theres a crowd thats into it, I'm in heaven.
2. AWAKE, for obvious reasons.
3. COLD, not freezing cold, but if I'm at a pretty cool temperature, then I'm faster and can concentrate better.

There the complete opposite.

1 lol i have this HUGE ass fan exept i forget where i got it
2 get some sleep! didnt your mother always get you to bed when you get cranky
3 throw things ususally help to vent stress.. no dont do this i found that throwing a ps2 controller acrross the room never makes me a better gamer so throwing vinyl is just the same... meh i dunno

1 Stonedness
2 Tiredness
3 Something on my mind

really its anything that makes you less concentrated on what you are doing. this is why late sets are sometimes a pain in the ass

Posted by Inertia on Aug-04-2004 09:43:

heat gets to me, but it doesn't really affect my skills. for me it'd be:

1. tiredness
2. insecurity (when i'm on equipment i've never used before, or it's been a while since i've mixed a couple ch00ns, i feel slightly insecure when i get on the decks, even if it's only me and a friend there)
3. people trying to talk to me while i'm at it. for some reason, they start their sentences as soon as i start to cue up. never right after i pulled the mix off. it's not the added noise, just when someone talks to me, i hear words directed at me, i seem to involuntarily concentrate on them, and i lose focus on my beats.

If I need to pee... that's gotta put me off. It's a pain in the ass to do it during a set in a club too.

Getting a phone call when in the mix.

Can't mix properly without at least some kind of audience. If someone/something interrupts me. When I get really pissed from crappy mixing. When I'm drunk.

Posted by FirstBorn on Aug-04-2004 14:58:

Many of the above, plus overconfidence. If I start to mix when feeling *too* confident, I sometimes become complacent and errors creep in.

Tiredness - definitely! DJ'ing requires concentration and fatigue screws that right up. Alcohol's also a big no-no for me, as it always makes me feel tired and lose concentration.

I *used* to take a very small amount of a certain naughty substance before DJ'ing to help combat nerves but try not to such much now.

I have to disagree about the heat thing, sound travels better in warm air and makes everything sound alot better. If heat affects your mixing then your not going to get far as a club DJ..

Getting nutted can make my sets alot more interesting, your not thinking as much about each tune, more about the set as a whole. You can go alot deeper and more twisted when your nutted I think..

The one thing that totally ruins my mixing is Cocaine. It completly kills off your musical receptors. FACT.

I disagree. When I get frustrated while playing Tiger Woods (the only game I know or want to know how to play) on the PS2, breaking the controller gives me a certain satisfaction that really puts me back in the game. Same with records. Breaking stuff is always an answer. True, you may not have what you broke anymore, but if it was f*cking you up in the first place, who needs it anyways?

Posted by Max Thomson on Aug-04-2004 15:33:

1 smoking pot (can never concentrate, and it slows me down considerably)
2 stupid friends who keep talking even tho they want to hear me spin, shut up already and listen!
3 fatigue (i can usually get over it if i keep moving)

what helps me is

1 drinking, i concentrate more on the flow of a set and can pick up a vibe a lot easier even tho im not as precise i can still mix fine
2 red bull energy drinks heighten my concentration but i need to drink 2 or more b/c coming off that caffeine high is NOT fun
3 people letting me know they're into what im spinning always helps

He he, I hear you... but usually you find that getting nutted only makes ones sets more interesting to oneself.

More a case of overly nutted, but yes your right. When I do afterparties in my house I find myself palying Kylie Records and everything when it gets to that 8am messy stage!!

I think any drug, alcohol included, impairs your ability to mix well. I know for some people they can't mix without a drink or two, but as for others it probably does more harm than good to do anything while on the influence of alcohol.

I've mixed while rolling and on the influence of a couple other things (extreme case), and let me say I wasn't too accurate with beatmatching and transitioning.

Posted by progressivepey on Aug-04-2004 19:13:

getting a blow job..

don't you hate it when you're just getting ready to lay a fat transition down and your girl won't let you go?

Posted by Cheetah86 on Aug-04-2004 21:27:

1. Being tired
2. Being hungry from not eating in a while or all day
3. Records that skip a lot and environments that make your needles skip a lot can get really annoying and distracting

Sometimes it helps to have a little bit of caffeine, but too much can make you jittery, so don't drink 10 cups of coffee before you start spinning

Posted by Shudder on Aug-04-2004 22:20:

mostly not in the mood of feeling the vibe. i've only mixed to my wall and not to an audience so i can't say much. i 've tried mixing on an empty stomach, it was mediocre.

when the phone rings i ignore it and dont care who it is especially if i'm in the middle of a transition.

Funny you should say that, I've played in clubs many times, and I'm never bothered, but I'm not talking it just being hot, I'm talking super hot where your sweaty and sticky, it only happens in my room, I've never been bothered by it in a club, its like theres different types of heat, and the one in my room is the killer, it gets to around 34 celcius in here, but the weird thing about that is, I've been outside on hotter days than that and messed around DJin, and I was fine, it was actually really wicked, being outside and having the sun on your shoulders, and that day was around the mid 30s, sorry I ain't giving these in fahrenheit (SP?) but I got used to the canadian system here, but believe me it easly gets upto around 100 Degrees F here.

hunger. Trust me cheetos and mixing dont...mix (argh the pun)

The thing that bothers me most is having a headache. I can't hardly get into the mix and I can't concentrate at all. -- Ryan

Yeah anytime i get interupted when spinning it can take me right out of my "groove". also if i have one bad mix i sometimes will end up in a rut of neverending bad mixes. and then of course the usual, being too tired or too wasted.

Getting interupted.
A skill you will have to learn is to have wide eyed punters of their faces comming up to you and giving you a load of meaningless gibber... Club scenarios are interesting but challenging at the best of times.

Never been bothered by heat.

Cheers

1. Dirty/sweaty/sticky hands
2. Not wearing shoes (seriously)
3. One bad mix.... it has a snowball effect

Posted by Wraith on Aug-05-2004 21:07:

Well, interruptions and heat I can deal and have dealt with. If I'm in the middle of a mix I will ignore almost everything and anything unless it's life threatening. The things that get me the most are fatigue, mood (if I'm in a depressed mood I mix like shit), and alcohol. Once I mixed fairly drunk and recorded it and all the while I was mixing I thought I was doing awesomely, then when I listened to the recording it was complete and utter shite. So when I mix it's only a red bull or two, an occasional beer, and water until I'm done.
