mixer headphone output as amplifier??

greetings all.... will the headphone output of a DJ mixer work as a headphone amplifier???? i currently own a djm300..and not sure whether to splurge on headroom's total bithead?? anyone can help here??? i'm a blooming headfi-er

im not sure i understand what you mean.. the cue signal which comes out of your headfone socket on the mixer is a signal from the channel, which is pre-amped already.

so yes, if you wanted to use a mixer as a headfone amp, then you could plug any input in, switch the cue to that channel and amplify the signal to your headfones with either the gain, or the headfone level knobs... but why you would want to do that is beyond me..

Well, for the purposes of a recording-quality or an audiophile-quality headphone amplifier... no, your mixer probably won't work. It should make your headphones LOUD enough, but if you want to drive headphones for a non-mixing situation where you will be listening to the *sound* of the things more than you would in a DJ situation... I'd suggest you get a real headphone amplifier. If you just wanna DJ mix, use your mixer like it was meant to be used!

gluegun,do you think headroom's total bithead would make a
significant audible jump from a creative audigy livedrive's headphone output?? my cans are the sr80,hdj1000 and hd212...i have heard goodthings about the sr80 with an amplifier... currently i use my mixer as the amp...but i'm not too sure whether the jump to the TBH is warranted as it costs US270!! but if the jump is significant i really don't mind starving myself for the next coupla months

You have an Audigy 1, yes? The Total Bithead, since it bypasses your sound card, would be a significant upgrade. Just make sure you ARE playing original CD's, and not mp3's, if you want this upgrade to really be worth it...

yeah thats right..i'm using an audigy 1 external drive...oh yeah btw i'm a REAL BASSHEAD....apparently the sr80s will start to exhibit punchy bass after amping it..is this true??? when powered thru my mixer, the sr80's bass was boosted..i'm hoping after purchasing the TBH, the bass becoms EVEN better!! ah well..us270..guess i'm gonna whore myself

Well, I would suggest NOT equalizing the bass... leaving it flat.. check on head-fi for info on replacing the pads on the sr-80's to give you the impact you crave... remember, impact is not just from the bass, it is the bass mixing with certain parts of the MIDRANGE. That's why the SR-80's are such great rock headphones, because of the drums which naturally give bass & impact in rock.. however, not every trance artist uses samples that have that impact, so the sr-80's might not give you what isnt there in the first place. Be wary.. and start looking for trance recordings that are well recorded and uses samples with lots of impact. I also suggest you get Exact Audio Copy and copy your cd's bit for bit, and compress them in a lossless way, and also use foobar to play them back... and upgrade your sound card to at least an a2zs!

yeah i read about the sr80 flats from todd's....costing US 30?!?!?! absurd for a piece of foam!!!!!! hahah i think i should stop scourging around at headfi...its costing me an arm and a leg!!!!!!!!!!

Well, it should be possible to modify other pairs of pads... ask the people at head-fi, whats a cheap way to augment the bass with some pads on the sr-80's...
