FUNK LEGEND RICK JAMES: 1948-2004

The creator of the hit "Super Freak" RICK JAMES has died, a Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson confirmed to ET. No details regarding his death were immediately available and the investigation is ongoing. The 56-year-old funk star was best known for his 1981 hit "Super Freak." He later fell victim to a crack cocaine addiction that led to a conviction for assaulting and holding a woman against her will. In 1998, James suffered a stroke. Just two months ago, James took the stage to receive a special ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Music Awards in Beverly Hills.

I don't think it was fully "natural causes" though.

The drugs took a heavy toll on him.

When I was skated 10 yrs ago, every skate video would use an oldie tune for each skaters part.

Rick Howard had a Rick James tune ... I think it's was called give it to me baby.

Never knew who made that tune, until recently. The tune was fitted so wickedly for his part.

OMG...i'm not sure how to react to this news yet. I still can't believe another legend is gone.

Not that I think his drug life style was a positive example for an artist...IMO it was a cry for help
....I was just a kid when I heard his stuff and thought wow....those were the days when artists actually came up with their own lyrics rather than the recyled stuff of today.

RIP Rick James. May you finally find what you've been searching for.
