I'm not sure what to think about this one, folks.
Disclaimer: This might freak a few of you out. I suggest that you refrain from reading this thread if you are easily spooked by the notion of aliens, monsters, etc. I experienced all of this first-hand just short of an hour ago. I do not know what to make of it at this point, and neither does the guy who was with me throughout the course of this evening's events. You have been warned.
I was out with a friend earlier tonight, driving around. No real aim. Just enjoying my new car stereo... listening to some trance, looking for something to do. We decided that it would be fun to head up to an old highway through the woods in the hills to the west of here. There is just short of nothing up there, except the road and trees. I've been there a few times, before, and it's always a fun place to drive.
So, we jumped on the freeway... took an exit... jumped on another road, and ten minutes later we had reached our destination. My friend thought it'd be a good idea to head north instead of south, because we always go south. (It leads back to the freeway, which takes us back home.) I thought this was a decent idea, too, so we were off like a shot into the darkness. (Not that it's pertinent, but we were listening to Paul Van Dyk @ Nature One 2004. Great set to listen to in the car.)
It turned out to be a lot curvier of a road to the north, not to mention the fact that there were just about zero sources of light in the area. Other than what was directly in front of my high-beams, we couldn't see shit. I was starting to think that this wasn't such a great idea, but the road is guardrailed in on either side, so you can't really turn around out there. I kept driving, hoping for a break in the rails that would give me enough room to pull a u-turn.
No such luck.
We went on for another ten to fifteen minutes, at which point we were pretty much out in the middle of nowhere. No houses. No side roads. No lights. Just woods. The moon wasn't even out. A few stars here and there, but otherwise, just my headlights. (I reiterate this point for a reason... keep reading.)
As tends to be the case out in the woods on summer nights around here, we soon found ourselves in the midst of a nasty bit of fog. I really wanted to turn around at this point, because it was 11:30 and I had no idea where this road was heading. I wanted to get home at a decent hour, and the combination of the fog and darkness was starting to creep me out a bit. (Mostly the thought of car troubles in a situation like this.)
Just as I was about to stop the car and do an inch by inch maneuver to get the car turned around, the fog started to clear, and we could see a bend in the road up ahead.
In retrospect, I cannot emphasize how much I wished we had turned back before this point.
I hit the curve a little fast, not realizing that this was actually the start of a series of s-curves in the road. I was pretty much driving down the middle of the road, because there were no other cars and I wanted to be sure to keep away from the sides of the road. (I have no idea where any ditches or drop-offs are out there. Better safe than sorry.)
After a minute or two of the s-curves, we were back on a straight road, heading in generally the same direction (north) as we had been. It was now that I first realized that we hadn't passed a single car, yet. Not one. I thought it a bit odd, but nothing unheard of.
I was just about to say something to my friend (who was riding shotgun) about this, when I saw something in the road up ahead of us. I dropped my speed down from 50MPH to about 30, hoping that it was just an animal or something and it would get out of the road when it saw my headlights. As we got closer, I saw that I was correct. It was an animal.
A deer.
A dead deer.
A dead deer that looked like something had taken an enormous bite out of its midsection.
I stopped the car. We both just sat there and stared for a second, not really knowing what to make of it.
It was laying right in the middle of the road. There was really no way around it. I was going to have to roll over it no matter what we did, so I decided now was as good a time as any to back up and start the slow process of turning the car around. There was something about this situation that just didn't seem right to me, and my friend felt the same way. There was NOTHING else wrong with this animal, other than the strange chunk missing from the middle.
"Dude... What the hell happened to that deer?" he asked me.
"Dunno," I said. "Looks like something ripped the shit out of it, though."
"Yeah. Could a bear do that?"
"That'd have to be a big fucking bear, man. Like, bigger than anyone has ever seen around here."
We kept talking for a minute as I tried to get the car turned around. It was just as we were pretty much sideways on the road that perhaps one of the freakiest things imagineable happened.

My headlights flickered, then died.
Immediately, I'm like, "Oh, FUCK THIS." I was NOT about to get out of my car to see what was wrong. No. Not in the middle of the woods in the middle of the night. Not happening.
I fumbled around for a second, and, thank God, there was a flashlight under the passenger seat from my roadside kit. (The kit is in the trunk, which we could have gotten to from inside the car via the back seats, anyway, so it wasn't a big deal.)
I clicked it on, turned off the car, and popped open the fuse box. I popped the fuse out for the headlights, snapped a replacement (also inside the fuse box, luckily) into place, and turned the car back on. The headlights kicked back on...
...and my friend and I found ourselves staring at something in the woods ahead of us. Something strange looking. A dark, strange something standing between some trees about twenty feet in front of us.
It didn't move at first. I couldn't make out what the hell it was, so I kicked the high beams on. For a second, it almost looked like a person. A very large person, hunched over in a position almost as though it was prepared to run.
We sat in silence for a moment, frozen. Eventually, I found words.
"Oh my God..."
"What the fuck IS that?" was my friend's reply.
There was so much racing through my head at the moment, I didn't really know what to do. I just stared... and whatever was in front of us seemed to be staring right back.
And then it fucking moved. Stood straight up and took a step or two toward us. On two legs. It had to be two legs. Otherwise, it would have been the biggest animal anyone has ever reported in this area.
It was at least six feet tall, probably more. The way the light was hitting it, I couldn't make out any features... and to tell the truth, I didn't really want to.
I hit the horn. Hard. It stopped for a minute, and sort of crouched down like it was trying to hide or something. I decided that I was going to make as much noise as possible. I hit the volume on the stereo, pumped up the bass, revved the engine, and even went so far as to hit the panic button on my car alarm's keychain remote.
Nothing phased the thing. It sat there, still seeming to be staring right at us.
"FUCKING FLOOR IT, MAN!"
The next minute or so are sort of a blur. I slammed down on the brake, pulled the e-brake up a bit, yanked the steering wheel to the left and gunned it as hard as I could. Peeled out, dropped the e-brake, gunned it again, and hauled ass in the opposite direction. (I hit the s-curves on the way back so fast, in fact, that we actually drifted around two of them.)
It took us about half the time to get back to the freeway that it did to get us out to where we saw... whatever the fuck it was we saw. All I know is that I think it killed that deer, wasn't afraid of us, and obviously wanted to get a much closer look at my car.
We stopped at a gas station once we got back into town, got the number for the police, and waited for them to show up. Neither of the officers who came to meet us seemed to think we were joking. I was shaking like a mofo, and my friend looked like he was going to cry. I'm 20 years old. He's 21. Neither of us is, by any means, a chicken.
It takes a lot to scare me. This shit scared me almost to the point where I was about to wet my pants out there in the woods.
We gave the officers the best directions we could manage, given the hour. Their first question, of course, was what we were doing out on the old highway in the middle of the night. We told them the truth; just out for a ride. We hung out and did our best to answer the rest of their questions, and then got back in my car and went home.
And now I'm sitting here posting this all for you to read. Wanted to get it down before I forgot any of the details. I'm really tired, confused, and still a bit freaked.
This was one of the worst nights of my life.
Jesus.
That's really weird, man.
dammit! i want to know what it was.

Shit, man, I don't even know what to say. Now I'm all creeped out and keep thinking I'm going to look over my shoulder and see a big fucking beastie.
I doubt the cops even went to check it out.
The worst part about the whole experience was the fact that, on the way back toward home, we passed a pick-up truck heading north.
God... I don't even want to think about that.
wow... i actually got chills reading this. i totally believe there are other forms of life that we dont know about (or that are kept secret) but as interested as i am in them, i would not have wanted to be in your place. i would have no problem coming face to face with something supernatural... but something totally physically THERE and staring back at me... i dunno if my heart could handle that.
and dont you notice how light ALWAYS manage to go out at the WORST time? 2 years ago me and a bunch of people drove out on this dark road in the middle of nowhere for like 20 miles to get to a secluded lake i know of. there are no lights on the road whatsoever, no houses, just a lot of woods. and then you have to walk through about half a mile of woods to get there. but once you are there its beautiful, the water is usually warm, and its a fun place to party.
the night we went, it was like there was not even a moon or star visible in the sky. we had one single flashlight but it had brand new batteries. we went skinnydipping and had just gotten out to the middle of the lake...
when the flashlight that was sitting on the shore, the ONLY light we could see, suddenly went out. imagine being in complete pitch black in the middle of nowhere, standing naked in the middle of a lake, half a mile of forest separating you and your car. NOT FUN
that was definitely the most scared shitless i have ever been. so i empathize.
where do you live? i've always been curious about things like the lochness monster and stuff like that. do you think what you saw was an animal or some other kind of person (an alien for lack of a better word)?
its cool that the cops believed you and didnt lock u up for being nutty.
Finally something on here worth reading.
I live in Washington State. Olympia area. (The capitol.)
I have no clue what I think it was, to be honest.
I don't understand why my headlights went out, either. We checked everything over when we got home. Nothing is wrong with them. It was just the most untimely fluke imagineable, I guess.
It's all just a bit too weird for me to process at the moment. I do know that nothing has ever stricken so much fear in me, before, though. I might as well have been standing in that road. I wouldn't have felt safe even if I had a gun in my hand.
And I think the cops believed us mostly because we were both in hysterics. Had I been alone, they would've thought I was whacked. My friend knew one of them, though, so they seemed to think we had seen something legitimately and weren't just letting the woods get to us or something.
Regardless, I'm never going back out there. Ever.
ho-ly shit. What highway exactly was that? I used to live in bellingham and might know what you're talking about. and this is bigfoot country, so that's fuckin scary.
WOW.
I'm in Olympia for the summer... Bellingham during the year for school. (WWU) I can never remember what highway it is. It's the one heading out into Black Hills, near Shelton and the other po-dunk towns out that way.
off of 101, i've been on that road
What's really scary is i was contemplating taking a drive out there (to and around shelton's countryside) earlier tonight for a long road trip to think about stuff.

horrible feeling being that scared isnt it? I've been in horrible storms in-flight, offshore, you name it....
but there's something terrible about not being able to explain the situation to yourself......and being few in numbers (1 or 2 people) and secluded.
the feeling is unexplainable......
the feeling is so overwhelming, you either feel like curling up and dying, or running like youve never ran before (literally). Eitherway, the adrenaline is absolutely insane.
That's a pretty crazy story. Think you could draw a picture of what it looked like?

I can't freehand for shit, and it never came into clear view. I did notice, however, that it was about half as wide as it was tall. If it was a person or something... they were massive. Like, bodybuilder large.
God. I keep getting goosebumps on my arms thinking about everything. I'm going to bed... or at least going to try.

Now that you've seen it, I think it will probably come after you.
it knows your afraid, and it can smell your fear..
what kind of car were you in, and how safe is it against large animals? Think of how you would write out the insurance claim.
If you made it that far
man, thats an awesome story!!! ur gona have crazy nightmares.
i love this kinda thing. but if i were in ur situation i would have shat me pants for sure.
ah i wish u had a camera to get pics!
wat was the bite out of the deer like?? can u explain it? how big it was, how clean it was cut/shredded, was the chunk missing? did u see the texture/color of the thing, or was it too far away??
im very intrigued...
Im stoned right now (I live near a large wooded area), and Im peering out the window of my room expecting to see glaring red eyes right now
its kind of creepy.
but ya. I bet you saw bigfoot, or his cousin.
Great story. Maybe take a DAY TIME trip up there with a rifle some day soon?
I wouldnt go up there in the dark again.
