Tiesto to spin at Olympic Opening Ceremony

Just got this e-mail sent from Tiesto's website:

Tisto, twice voted the #1 DJ in the world by DJ Magazine, will make Olympic history on Friday, August 13, when he becomes the first DJ ever to perform in an Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games.

Some four billion people will be watching the planet's premier sport event, when the 28th Olympiad of the modern era opens in Greece, the land where the Olympics were born, and the City where they were revived 108 years ago.

No DJ has ever performed at the Olympic Games.

The President of the ATHENS 2004 Organizing Committee, Mrs. Gianna Angelopoulos-Daskalaki, heralded the announcement of Tistos participation, saying: Our Ceremonies will include unique Greek artistic elements along with modern and international perspectives. While it is path-breaking, it is also natural, that a modern artist like Tisto will contribute to the celebration were planning on our opening night. We welcome him to Athens.

In October 2003, Tisto was approached by the Athens Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games (ATHOC) for a DJ-performance of 90 minutes during the parade of the athletes, a part of the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games.

During this parade, all participating nations introduce their athletes, over 10,000 in total. ATHOC has shown it values art and innovation by asking the most popular DJ on Earth to produce the music for the parade.

Tisto will perform his DJ-set live in the Olympic Stadium in Athens. This will include new tracks produced especially for the Opening Ceremony and songs that have been tailored to compliment the spirit of the Ceremony.

In connection with this announcement, Tisto said, I am honored to be to be part of the biggest sports event in the world. The fact that the Games are returning to their birthplace and to the city where they were revived makes Athens 2004 very special. The opportunity to perform my music for billions of people around the globe will be the greatest highlight of my life.

GREEK PRESS RELEASE WILL FOLLOW

Tiesto is going to do great.

He's not my favorite, but let me say that he's getting ready to make a mark like no other artist in this genre, and I hope that generations of artists prosper from his groundbreaking performance.

I'll be glued to the boob-tube, like never before...

Huh? no see this is going to generate him a lot of exposure and make him a lot of money... Tiesto isn't in the business of doing shit "for the scene"...

hence why i WON'T be watching or caring...

Either way, I've always followed the Olympics, especially the inaguration.. heh, this should be interesting though.

more tiesto hatin', why am i not surprised. but as far as just doing this to generate money, i dont think so, the man is already fabolously rich, but hey if you had the chance to do it wouldnt you? yeh, nuff said.

I saw a similar thread about this in the MD forum. People act like Tiesto contacted the Olympic Committee and begged them to be able to do this. Neil is right...if they contacted you and asked you to open the ceremony you are going to say that you wouldn't do it? Hell yes you would. It is an honor. Instead of hating on Tiesto try to be thankful for the exposure that he will bring to trance/EDM. Instead of talking shit about him try to wish him well because like it or not he is representing our scene at that moment.

Nice to see that the thread in MD is pretty much all positive posts.

There is no Tiesto hating here. It is safe to say we all wish Tiesto good luck in this tremendous honor and a major milestone in dance music. I hope he does his set perfect because he will be watched by over a billion people. No ego, no mistakes and give everyone a good show. Just keep the vodka away from him.

i agree, keep the grey goose away form him! but in all seriousness, there is nobody more capable(when sober) than tiesto of putting togethter a perfect set, his set history is a testament to that. i think tiesto is extremely honored to be performing in such a revered historical event and im sure that he will shine bright in the global stage that is the olympic games. as far as the ego thing, tiesto has always come across(and ive met him, and spoke to him personally) as humble and a geniuinly friendly person to me, very much like his dutch counterparts, ferry, armin, and sander, leave the ego thing to oakie! cheers and good luck to tiesto!

09-08-04 MUNICH - World-renowned DJ Tiesto has tested positive for illegal substances and has been banned for life from the Olympics.

Tiesto, expected to wreck as many as three times in the Opening Games has been replaced with Super Greg, who claims he is of Greek Descent. The 2004 Olympics begin Friday in Athens.

Tiesto, who has been mum on his ban released astatement through his publicist, " I am saddened by this ban but in some ways I am happy. The Olympics requested I play Village People and C & C Music Factory as well as a Backstreet Boys track so thank god I'm off the Hook."
