I would veto that resolution
Posted by tathi on Aug-12-2004 02:58:
That would make America care about the UN as much as it cares about Australia
Posted by smokeape on Aug-12-2004 03:40:
Dang, I've said this about a hundred times. The UN needs to move to Paris, France!

Why won't the UN move? Gee...how many nations want thousands of corrupt career bureaucrats to show up on its doorstep?
And hey tathi, we've been paying attention lately! Bush Signs Australia-US Free Trade Agreement

We'd be happy to have it. Perhaps then we would be able stop our current government voting in favor of Israel all the time.

Are you seriously suggesting that the vast majority are corrupt? If you are, are you also leveling the same criticism at, say -- most members of the US congress?
Ugh, don't get me started -- why on earth we signed such a horrible deal is beyond me.

Talk about a no-brainer!

UN out of the US
US out of the UN
The UN is a conceptual nightmare that should be disbanded. It makes no sense to give dictatorships the world over a voice on par with the democracies of the world.
Somethings a tad awry when the UN's court (International Court of Justice), led by a judge from China accompanied by judges from shitholes like Egypt, tells a democracy like Israel that it can't build a wall (China?) to defend itself.
And dont EVEN get me started on the Oil-for-Food scam, UNRWA, the Durban conference, etc.

Screw the UN. Up with NATO.

I hope it leaves here too, gives the US an excuse to cut funding for it, i wish completely.

Ya. The economic impact will be staggering. You know how much the property value of the UN on prime real estate in Manhatten must be?
Billions!
I can't wait to see what Trump does with it when the UN leaves... (apprentaice 3?)

You mean Trump with his recent bankruptcy and his giant ego? He's such a cocksucker!
But yes, that real estate on the Avenue of the Americas is some hot property!

I was gonna buy the property when they leave and open the world largest starbucks. Can never have to many of those.

Well, considering that a specific democracy which I will not name here has shown itself to be equal if not greater threat to world security than many dictatorships, I don't see what's the problem here.

Maybe because the wall does not run exactly over the border but a large portion of it runs through Palestinian territory instead?

Hm, I don't see what's really the purpose of NATO in the post cold war era.

Sure, cause great masses of uninformed people with no access to a free press are never wrong

Legal context for this statement?

Oil-for-food? You mean where the UN let Saddam skim billions of oil sales to pay for his own palaces? And the Iraqi people still rotted? And the UN didnt care, cause hey, cheap oil, plus some pocket change to go along with it?
UNRWA? The organization that is responsible for keeping the Palestinians as perpetual refugees?
The Durban "anti-Racism" conference that turned into an anti-Semitic hate fest? With such gems as "we wont stop until the state of Israel is destroyed" followed by mass cheers from all in attendance? Please.
The UN is a morally bankrupt organization both in practice and in premise. The US should pull all funding and evict the organization from our land. If the rest of the world wants to feel self-important, do it on your own money!
I'll politely listen and disagree when France and Germany want to voice concerns over American policy. 75% of the worlds nations can really, as Dick Cheney might put it, go @#$& themselves.
There are few countries in the world that have any right whatsoever to lecture America about morality.

Hehe, in the first paragraph I was thinking of US, not Israel. But since there are only 5 or so Israel-Palestine threads on the first page, we certainly need a boost in those. Come on, don't pretend that you don't like it!

So how come it was that the majority of the US population who did have access to free press managed to get convinced that it was Saddam who was behind the WTC attack, as well as that Iraq had WMDs capable of attacking targets on US and British soil? Gee, I guess people with access to free press are sometimes wrong too, eh?

Care to explain that? How did they pose a threat to world security?
As for the US, they first supported Iranian revolutionaries hoping that the islamic revolution will spread through soviet owned muslim territories, then they supported the talibans against SSSR, then they supported Saddam against Iran, then they attacked Saddam after telling him that the US government will not interfere with their borderline dispute with Kuwait, then they ignored the taliban attrocities untill Bin Laden made the 9-11 attack, then they attacked the talibans, and finally, they wrongfully accused Iraq and occupied it.
In the meanwhile, during the US occupation of Iraq, there is a huge humanitarian crisis in the Darfur region of Sudan, with potential casualties of about a million people. And unlike the US, France has sent their peacekeeping troops there.

Legal context for this statement?
It's a bit difficult to do that since Palestine is not yet a country with established borders, but if we consider the real border as the one from Camp David agreement, we can see that the wall often ventures into Palestinian territory, while it never goes to the opposite side of the border.

Oil-for-food? You mean where the UN let Saddam skim billions of oil sales to pay for his own palaces? And the Iraqi people still rotted? And the UN didnt care, cause hey, cheap oil, plus some pocket change to go along with it?
The UN had no possible means at its disposal to enforce a rightful distribution of goods. It was obvious that a large portion of the UN money will go to Saddam's hands, yet it was a necessary evil, considering that otherwise there would be hundreds of thousands of starved Iraqis. Out of 31 billion $ of humanitarian aid allocated to Iraq, Saddam managed to steal about 4 billion. The rest of the 27 billion still managed to get into the hands of the Iraqi people. The whole program extracted Iraqi oil worth about 65 billion $, in other words, the oil was sold at half price. Besides, would you care to check which country was the primary buyer of the cheap oil? If my memory serves me correctly, it was the US.
quote:
UNRWA? The organization that is responsible for keeping the Palestinians as perpetual refugees?
How is UNRWA responsible for that? The palestinians themselves chose to be perpetual refugees until the land they claim as theirs is given to them. The UNRWA only gives those people humanitarian aid.
quote:
The Durban "anti-Racism" conference that turned into an anti-Semitic hate fest? With such gems as "we wont stop until the state of Israel is destroyed" followed by mass cheers from all in attendance? Please.
I hardly believe such a sentence made it into the final declaration. Besides, Israel is building a wall around a large portion of its population. Since the word apartheid literally means something like seperatedness, it's a pretty good description of the situation.
quote:
The UN is a morally bankrupt organization both in practice and in premise. The US should pull all funding and evict the organization from our land. If the rest of the world wants to feel self-important, do it on your own money!
Funny since it was the US who proposed forming such an organization in the first place. Besides, all the UN members are funding the organization, and I really do believe that the US is much better of being a member of the UN than being outside of it. If the US were to exit the UN, that would reinstate the cold war situation of a bipolar world with US+Israel on one side and the UN (probably led by EU, Russia and China) on the other.

Lucky for the US that you are not their chief of diplomacy.

I can say that the same goes vice-versa. Let's just remember the native americans and african slaves.

1. yeah right US is the ONLY democracy in the world, the rest of the contries are just a bunch of communists.
2. Democracys can never be wrong.
3. Non-democracys are always wrong.
4. If a great majority of the world resist you, they are wrong you are right, cause you can do whatever you want.
etc

i can agree that the UN need reform, but to say that it is not a needed organization is just soooo stupid and ignorant.
