futureshop and warranty ?

last year i bought a digital camera Canon Powershot A70 , i also bought the extra warranty they give (the one of 3 years).

tonight i wanted to take some pics and miserably i dropped the camera. when i try to turn it on it shows the canon screen then nothing happens and it gives me a "E18" error. the lens isn't broken but the stuff supposed to cover it when it's turned off is broken

my question is : is futureshop going to repair it or replace it ? knowing that i accidentally dropped it , and on their website it says even when you have the extra warranty such things aren't covered

i wanted to know if any of you experienced a similar situation with futureshop

extra warranties anywhere are a scam!!!

sorry, you'll have to send it to Canon or cover up the accident

Posted by fastmp3 on Aug-15-2004 03:30:

front part is broken , i have no way to mask it

how much would canon charge for a repair ?

Posted by striptease4me on Aug-15-2004 03:43:

Sorry to tell you this but those *extended* warranty things they sell you at places like furture shop and best buy are a huge SCAM. There should be a warranty provided by the manufacturer anyway so the extra 60 bux or whatever it is you paid was a complete waste. Every extended warranty you give them is pretty much just helping their profit margin.

Because you dropped it and it has been a year ( cannon warranty lasts only one year and doesn't include when you drop it.) Unless you are a really good liar and can figure out a way to convince either futureshop or canon that you are not at fault, looks like you will just have to suck it up and have it repaired at your own expense.

Those warranties arent a scam when you know how to milk it. As long as there is no physical damage to the product, you are ok. Bring back the item more than three times for warranty and they have to replace it with the current years model.

If the lens cover is still attached, i suggest you try to move it back into place manually and go to futureshit. If you can't, dont let them know that you accidently dropped it. Tell them you are getting that error and all the while trying to keep the lens away from prying eyes.

There is no harm in trying that first as the worst thing they can say is no.

exactly don't tell them that you dropped it, just tell them it doesn't work. has always worked for me in similair situations!

I have returned my DJ headphones 4 times now (Sony500's) to Futureshop. If they say no, I go to the next one or come in the next day and just be like it just broke, I didn't do anything. They have always taken it. Not like it is their money. Honestly, go right before closing, they will be like FINE take it!

basically i can return it to any futureshop outlet ?

can someone else return it for me ? i'm not in Canada currently ...

warranty is definately good to get, ESPECIALLY at a place like futureshop..

you tell them 2 1/2 years into your warranty whatever you bought doesn't work as well as when it first did.... and they'll replace it with something new... and since it'll probably be too expensive to replace your (old) model, they'll give you the newer model of which you paid (the amount)..

so if you bought that canon camera 3 years ago for 500$ and took it in today, they'd give you a $500 camera..

another thing.. NEVER EVER EVER EVER buy electronics at futureshop/bestbuy.

NEVER

That's the exact reason people buy the extended warranty. They get a new model for 'free'. What's the problem with that? That is the readon I buy the extended warranty. It has worked for me before.

yes buy the warranty but remember, 90% of stuff from futureshop/bestbuy is refurbished.... which is why i don't buy major electronics from them

did you just contradict yourself in that post?

Posted by Kris on Aug-16-2004 16:01:

yes i did kind of... but doesn't matter.. anything you buy it doesn't hurt to get the extended warranty, whether it's at futureshop or somewhere else...

and yes i can backup the claims.. i used to work at the distrobution centre & the first thing my supervisor told me was

"don't buy any major appliances from futureshop, becuase right behind this wall (he pointed towards the wall in front of me) is where we fix up 90% of the items that are broken & sell them as brand new..."

Posted by ShadoWolf on Aug-16-2004 16:21:

if you took that to the press it'd be a huge story

of course, you'd probably get hit with a defamation suit...

Posted by malek on Aug-16-2004 17:30:

well fixing 90% of whats broken and selling them is not the same as 90% of the things sold at Futureshop are refurbished.

This is illegal. Refurbs or remanufactured items must be clearly marked as such.

I doubt FutureShop/BestBuy sells refurbs or remanufactured items as new.

I've worked retail/sales most of my life, and if it can be fixed in store then they can get away with not advertising it as refurbished... Items sent away to be fix by said professional then becomes a refurbed item... When fixed in store it must be sold at a discounted price, but reasons don't have to be stated... Of course I don't agree with pretty much anything stores de behind their walls...
As long as there are no extremly loose pices, and nothing looks broken you can always lie and say it has stopped working... Unless they can prove without a doubt that you yourself broke they are required by you warranty to fix it, unless the broken item/piece isn't covered under warranty... Which all that info should be stated somewhere in the warranted contract...
Now did you take it in and tell them your dropped it? If you did there are also ways around that...
Let me know if you want some more advice, I know most loop holes, mainly because I am retched with electronics, and they always want me to pay...lol

Posted by Crazy Serb on Aug-17-2004 01:28:

you can get away with almost anything at FutureShop, as long as you don't admit it's your fault for the item not working. As long as they can't prove it that it's your fault, they are required to fix it for you or give you a new one... if you have the extended warranty.

But since I will never buy stuff at FS again (and haven't for the last couple of years), let alone get extended warranty, I'm not the best person to give advice here. Or am I?

Posted by djdustx on Aug-17-2004 01:48:

CBC did a report on this of some kid who baught a 400 dollar mp3 player...They pulled some hidden camera shit and caught Managers and employees stating that the warranty will cover accidents...which is not true

The conclusion was...that u just bring it there and say it broke in ur hands. That u didnt drop it/misuse it...but it simply broke. Its ur word against theirs and well they should apply by the rule of "The customer is always right"

So just tell them it broke and u dont know how

Sebastiano

Good luck man...there pure con-artists

P.S. On another note...i have an eerie feeling about FutureShop...especially the one on Dundas East...Everyone is the same Color...and everyone uses the same language...Not being English...Wtf is up with that.

Posted by Kris on Aug-17-2004 01:54:

I didn't work at a store, i worked at the best buy distrobution centre. That's where all of hte items went back when they were returned to the stores with problems.

It's not illegal actually (the way they did it) but it was hinted that the Parent (best buy america) didn't know what was going on.

I'm sure if they did management here would get a really big overhall...

i really appreciate your advises , thanks everyone

LAYLA-KEKET any more advises please ? shoot me something in a PM or here if you prefer , thank you so much !!

Taha

Since Ive been "social engineering" Futureshop employees for a long time , I'm 99% sure it's possible to get your cam's warranty applicable.

Write me email or pm and we'll arrange something.

Btw, Futureshop's extended warranty is SOOOO useful when you know how to use them.
Buy the cheapest item with x-warranty, toast it after few months, bring it back and go back home with a new updated item.
I did it with harddrives. CD burners. DVD burners. Cellphones. Digital cams. MP3 players.

But how-to ..?
Hehehe... *cough* One way is to connect a BBQ starter to the firmware pins of the item and light it up. *cough*
