production laptop, specs ?

Hi, as stated before my old one died. I was limitted to one song loading in live per time, so I had to mix vinyl in between setting things up on my laptop since it was a bit on the slow (and cheap thanks) side.

What would you recommend I look for in a laptop that I would use in first place to play live, but maybe even replace my current pc, mainly for producing, so a laptop just for producing, I don't care about if I can play Doom3000 on it or not, as long as it kick's ass for audio processing

I figured I need loads of ram, but what's the max in a laptop you can get ? I know my way around computers, but not laptops, so help is appreciated.

ALso, I would pick a mobile chip, since they heat way less. But what kind of Ghz should I pick ? Because They are different then the normal cpu's in a pc. For example I have a 2.4 Ghz in my PC, but then you have a laptop with a mobile chip (damned I forgot the name, something like 'Intel tiburon') but it's not tiburon obviously), there having a 1.2 in it's kind is like having a super laptop or something, I don't quite get it.

What good soundcard would you say I'd have to get on the laptop ?

Oh and I don't care if this thread has been done in the past, when it comes down to computer, it's only the present and future that counts, the past is too slow already.

Cheers

Intel Centrino mobile technology

- Integrated wireless LAN capability
- Breakthrough mobile performance
- Extended battery life
- Thinner, lighter designs

Yes that's what i was talking about

Cheers

But anyone can give me some pointers I should keep in lmind ? Including the cpu power.

I think the CPU's change speed depending on the work load, rather than running at a constant speed, thrus uses less power and less heat.

Although the FSB is 400mhz rather than 800mhz from a P4, so how much difference that makes I'm not sure.

Also the biggest hard drive capacity is only 80GB at 5400rpm, or 60GB at 7200rpm. But most cheaper laptops come with 40GB, at 5400rpm I asume.

512MB of RAM seems to be about the standard with 64MB garphics, and then you will need a cardbus/usb/firewire sound card for producing.

So do you recommend me buying a firewire card, or are these generally worse then the normal pc version soundcards ? Otherwise I'll just get a really good one for my PC first, now that I finally upgrade my gear, I'm going to make some serious changes to make it better for mastering.

Not sure about sound cards, PCI would be better, but they don't go in laptops.

do get firewire or some pc-card system like RME multi-/digiface. usb sucks for professional audio.

and if you dont care about games and not really commited to windows, consider a apple powerbook. da bomb for (live) audio purposes i think. most models have firewire built-in
