What's the problem with Oakie ?

Huh, I must be living under a rock or something. I read a mixmag article, and they're dissing oakie because he's making music for the movies ?! What the hell is wrong with that ? Picture and audio togheter makes a wonderful experience no ? They state pretty much that he sold out by going to the USA ? Did I miss something or what ? I read similar things on this board now that I think of it. The man makes some good tunes for them movies, I loved what he did for swordfish lol. What's the problem with oakie ? Did he piss against the Queen's leg or something ? (I would cheer for him if he did that btw ! Royalty should have left the scene centuries ago :O)

Where and when did he actually become a man-whore as he has been called .. ?

like Tisto said, he's done everything in Dance music

I've never liked him that much, wasn't really interested in his music. A few nice remixes but that's it for me.

Oakie is awful. His last show in Detroit was a disgrace to trance music. The problem is he just doesn't care anymore about what he both produces or plays. In fact, he is not even worth me wasting any more time talking about him. Worst show I've ever seen!

Posted by MiamiTrance Man on Aug-15-2004 20:36:

People are always dissin' him nowadays, but in every, "how did you get into EDM" threads, over half the responses usually involve one of Oakie's classic Essential Mixes from the '99 World Tour. What he did for EDM and continues to do for it through video games and movie soundtracks can't be ignored. Plus, his new Creamfields CD looks great. I'm bettin' his star in the eyes of many EDM fans will raise again in the future...

no point of discussion this actually.. everyone with a brain can see that Oakenfold is great.. he`s productions are mindblowing.. his mix-compliations, consists of the best..

here is some of his outstanding work..

Swordfish - Soundtrack
Element Four - Element Four
Madonna - Hollywood (Oakenfold remix)

not to mention all his great mix-compilations

yup

his paul oakenfold present show on ETS global, made me sleep

I think Oakenfold's Swordfish soundtrack worked really well for the movie. Especially all the action bits, and that phat remix of "Planet Rock" in the club.

Some people who don't like Oakie mean the Paul of today, not "Oldkie".

I dont like it when people bash oakie, he sucks now, but he did so much for the music, that he deserves respect. Anyways i only joined this forum this summer, and i've seen this same type of thread 4 times...

Posted by Boomer187 on Aug-15-2004 21:45:

hes got a quick residency here in vegas for 6 weeks for a tv show.

plus he dropped some cool ass songs during gkgg. i oved them.

but he does trainwreck often, and his oakie presents show before gdjb is very boring.

Not really, Oakie has been also good lately for those who listened to Global Gathering, I remember I was in the thread of tracklisting that day and many agreed he was good and some said : Is he coming back or what?

meanwhile, Oakie is Oakie, he's much greater than any bunch of people saying he's not good, he doesn't need it as much as he doesn't care.

... Are you serious? I've tried listening to that set twice and can't get through it. Horrible mixing. Two examples off the top of my head:

- The World Doesn't Know in into Traffic. He mixed right over the melody, and it sounded absolutely horrible.

- Towards the end, when he queued up a track and started fading in, it was quite off-beat. He had to re-queue it.

His track selection for a recent Radio 1 set was almost exactly like his GKGG set. Granted, it was only about a week apart, but DJs still change-up the order of their sets.

You're right. He doesn't care, which ends up leading to either half-assed or no-assed sets. I don't care how much you've done for dance music, if you're still going to DJ and produce, at least put some Goddamned effort into it.

Oakenfold will always be a legend in my mind, 1999 EM World Tour = UNSTOPPABLE. He's gone crap now but always a legend

I agree. I'll always love the earlier years.

Posted by Torley Wong on Aug-15-2004 23:10:

Yeah, when people have that admiration for the past Paul, that's definitely the Oakenfold of Old. Oakenf-OLD?

Posted by Floorfiller on Aug-16-2004 00:14:

people just don't like oak because its become trendy not to like him...

Spot on, its irrelevant for me what he's like now, he's already done his bit. He was top of the pile when trance peaked and he really was brilliant.

Posted by torontotrance on Aug-16-2004 00:47:

He found some hip hop artists, led acid house, led goa trance, got a big ego and was why superstar deejays were hated. I mean he's done his bit, let him die of coke addiction.

Can I buck the trend of this forum, and everybody seems to be sheep, and say that I like Zoo York?

SURE.

I like to tell imaginary pets, just say what you really believe. And that's the best you can do. Hee hee.

I like Zoo York too. That three-note melody from "Requiem For A Dream" never sounded so... dreamy! Really, I like the way the beat lumbers and clunks underneath it like a pissed-off Ankylosaurus.

I liked most of Bunkka. Good pop songs. The meaning behind the video for "Ready Steady Go" still eludes me, however.

Posted by speedracer_mec on Aug-16-2004 05:31:

Oakenfold has been doing quite well recently

Worked on his new compilation which has gotten rave reviews.

I love his recent rework of Ready Steady Go which was done specifically for the movie Collateral. It featured some distorted Korean vocals.

His cream set was not good though......I really thought it lacked depth.

His set as GK was pretty good. He messed a bit several times...but his track selection was pretty good.
He played a remix of an old Goa tune late in the set...which i thought was an amazing tune...Tune is yet to be Ided....I believe it might be MWNN's work.

His mixing when he came to Houston was amazing...I guess he gets really fucked up during those massive parties.

He still has it in him when he tries
