sennheiser hd25 vs hd280 pro

it looks like lots of people on the headphones thread want to know

Posted by nrjizer on Aug-16-2004 21:12:

I haven't used either but from what I can gather from others' experience, the 280's are more about the sound quality, and the 25's are more about the demanding DJ use in clubs/big systems. The 280's are a lot bigger and bulkier and also sound a bit better. The 25's are light and pretty flexible, and have a punchier sound (for better beatmatching on a big system).

Of course I could be wrong.

Posted by benoitfan on Aug-17-2004 02:31:

I only have the 280s, but from what I've read in the forums (and you'll surely find the difference if you read the hundreds of headphones threads :P) I think the 25s are better for DJs, better bass, while the 280s are more oriented for producing, better sound I guess, although many people such as myself use it for DJing purposes...

Posted by venomdx on Aug-17-2004 07:13:

I use the HD25, and the sound is fantastic... but the thing i really love about them is how much of the outside noise they block out. The sounds is really fantastic, but I haven't used the HD280 so I can't compare them directly. They are a dream to beatmatch in though.

Posted by tu_face on Aug-17-2004 09:39:

to be honest, i thought the sound quality was fantastic in both, but i thought the 25's had the better sound

i own hd280's tho, and they are the best headfones ive ever used. they block out tonnes of ambient noise, and i would guess probably more than the 25's due to the bigger closed cups that go round your ears more as opposed to on them... i hate the small cups of the 25's.

and never get the hd25sp. they are poo on a stick. well, i'll rephrase that, they are good headfones on a stick. very rigid and annoying headband and cups that spin 360 degrees :/

Are they that bad?

The -25 are about $400, so I was looking at the 25SP as an option, they stack up equally price wise against Technics RPDJ1210 and Pioneer hdj-1000s, dunno about features tho........

another headphone thread

Hd 25s- excellent, but tiring on your ears after a while. one of the best pairs available. They WILL break
HD 25SP- same sound, but stupid swivelling headband cup type design which is retarded. They will break
Hd280- look cheap, sound cheap, are cheap. Utter wank- mentioning them in the same sentence as HD25s is an insult to them. Ridiculously big. They will break.

*forgive this post- im in a foul mood today, but i stand by what ive said

Bang on the money and blunt with it... this is why we like our Freak.

From my own experience I have found the HD25 to be the best I have used. They will break though but you can get replacement parts for them unlike a lot of other headphones.

Don't like the HD25SPs for all the above reasons.

HD280s... why are we talking about them again?

Cheers
Nem

because they are excellent headfones

i have to disagree with freak, in that they are not utter wank they might not be pretty, but they definitely do the job very well for me. they sound fantastic, and as mentioned parts are replaceable. they are also very comfortable to wear.

i have seen a lot of people saying something about how the hd280s break, but i have noticed how much ware i am giving mine and they seem to be withstanding even sunday sessions fucked out of our minds! and have been doing for quite some time now.

Gotta add that my HD280 cans broke (the headband as most of you will have probably guessed). Love em - they sound great, love the flat frequency response and their isolation. I'm interested in the HD25 though, particularly interested in how they are better than the HD280... but this is the first time I've heard that people have had trouble with the HD25 breaking, because everything I have read, mostly on head-fi, says they are built extremely well, unlike the HD280. I'm also interested in how well they isolate as compared to the HD280, of course taking into consideration that the HD280 is circumaurel (encompasses your ears) while the HD25 is supraaural (sits tightly up against your ears, not around them).

This is another part I like about them.

Also I have to add one more thing, when I bought my HD25's the cord which came with them was only 1.5m and that was a bit of a drawback, I don't find that cord long enough a lot of the time, but you can replace this cord easily as with most of the other parts on the HD25.

this is the reason i'd NEVER get the hd25s. never! i can't understand why someone would get supra-aural rather than circumaural! i hate supra-aural headphones so bad! they feel the worst of all types of headphones and just simply suck! and this is all IMO then!

Have you tried the hd25s yet?

They block out an enormous amount of outside noise, and they don't feel bad at all.

I think you should try something first, rather than just saying it sucks because you think it sucks.

I've had both the 280s and the hd25s on, and i prefer he hd25 over all of the headphones i have listened to. That includes the infamous Sony (ahum...), Pioneer HDJ-1000, Sennheiser 280s, and the hd25s...

nope, i haven't tried either ones, but i'm thinking of trying and buying the 280s because so far i've hated every supra-aural headphones i've tried on and loved the feeling of circumaural phones. just what i prefer. and i've read many times that the 25s can be quite annoying after long times because they put so much pressure on your ears. and i have a big head too!
and don't the 280s block out more noise than the 25s though?!
anyway i'd never consider buying the 25s really as i don't think they're what i'm looking for or something that i'd be comfortable with!

both side of the band are broke...i had them for almost 2.5 yrs now

I still prefer the HDJ-1000.......HD-25s are good too but too expensive IMO

My HD280s have now cracked more after this picture was taken, pieces have been breaking off the right side up to one inch from the end. They are still useable but very soon will break completely.

Maybe it's because I have a tall head, I need to extend the headphones about 7/8 of an inch out of the band (they can extend 1.5 inches). I tried putting the headband on the back of my head but that does not work, they slide off.

I am about to try to get a gig at some local places so this is a very bad time for them to break (again), although they are still under warranty it takes 3 weeks to get them fixed.

So I need a second set of phones, maybe HD-25 or other. Definitely do not want to worry about them breaking. I guess I could get the 280s fixed and then sell them since they don't work for a domehead like me.

Proud owner of HD-280. Excellent headphones. Sound awesome. Been using them for quite a while and not a single crack.

Both fine phones, but i would choose the hd25's

I don't think you'd have a problem selling them. In fact, I recently sent my HD280s to Sennheiser here in the states to get repaired, it took them just over 2 weeks (meanwhile I had to play gigs with those horrendous sony 700's) but I got a brand new pair in the mail. It was weird, there was no mention of a brand new pair, but everything was new, the earpads, the cable, the headband, and it was obvious when I used them because they sounded brand new, as opposed to burned in.

Why? Could you go into more detail, cos personally I'm not going to buy HD25s just because of the general consensus, I'd like to know the details.

Why?

Posted by Dj Thy on Aug-20-2004 18:57:

I use the HD25's regularly for work, and they are rock solid. Sound is crisp and detailed. Some might like the sound of the HD280's better, but I find there is more detail in the 25's, and the low end is more controlled.

About rock solid, my HD25's have been mistreated in any possible way you can imagine, people stepping on it, pulling the cable, falling from pretty high, even went underwater once (not voluntarily I must admit) and they still work like new. Only thing I had to change was the cable.

The HD25SP's don't use the same drivers though. They don't sound the same as regular 25's (a little more muffled), the cable wires differently (in the regular 25, one side gets stuffed in the headband) and you don't get the split headband. But they are cheaper, and still pretty solid.

Be aware there are several 25 models. If you want to dj/produce with them, it's better to take the HD25-1. It's impedance is 70 Ohm, and is more suited for this use. The cable is 1.5m long, and it features a standard minijack, with a 1/4" adaptor included. You can find HD25-13's also, which are 600 Ohm. Generally more suited for hifi, and recording monitoring functions, where several phones are used together, 600 Ohm will provide more margin for excessive impedance drop. The cable here is 3m, and it features a standard 1/4" jack. Although I must warn you that in some countries I've seen they switched the cables between the versions.

If you are from the UK, beware for the so called British Airways batch. Some malintentioned people sold HD-25 headbands, with lower spec'd SP drivers, for the price of the HD-25.

Oh and finally, besided they being rock solid, if you ever break something, everything is replaceable. You can even get velvet earpads if you wanna pimp it
