Why rock sucks (and trance doesn't)!!
Just been lying in bed this morning flicking through some of my old 'Kerrang' magazines and had a total insight into what a complete wanker I used to be 
Looking at some of those people and with the benefit of a bit of reflection, I think what used to piss me off the most about the skate punk / metal scene and why I love trance so much now, is the total contrast with the aggression and the ego's of individual people.
I'm just looking at these pictures and laughing, it's totally like you go to your average rock club and all the people there are a bunch of assholes standing around with their thumbs in their belt loops on their jeans, all these black t shirts, uniform beer can in hand and scowl on face, desperately trying to look cool and moody and more staunch than their mates. Even the girls look bloody intensely miserable.
And if you try and dance at a rock or metal gig there's aggro there too, there's so many people trying to get to the front of the mosh pit (what a stupid concept!) and it ends up just like being on the bottom of a rugby scrum against the All Blacks for 3 hours. And if you start actually trying to move any part of your body other than just jumping straight up and down and banging your head a little bit in time to the beat, you always seem to collide into some wanker who gets all uppity and kidney punches you back or just starts crowd surfing on your head and trying to kick you with their Doc Martens.
So by comparison, for me it was a fuckin blinding ray of light the first time I got suckered into going along to a trance club, I was just blown away that these people had obviously gone out with the sole intention of just getting lost in the music and having a brilliant time, not posing or trying to pull some unfortunate chick, guys and girls actually mixing together without all the dumb ass aggro and testosterone tension, everyone actually happy and smiling, not caring about anything except dancing to the music the way they felt like, not trying to act like they're the man or the cool girl (although of course it's that very lack of posing and self consciousness that makes trance chicks so goddam sexy 
)
Anyway that was a wicked night out and still one of my best memories ever, we went home at about 6 o'clock that morning and I was just utterly gob smacked by how cool a time I'd had (by the way that club was in London, 'Fahrenhite', in the Soundshaft in Charing Cross, and it's a bloody top recommendation ) I went and bought the original 'Trance Nation' MoS compilation later on that day and that was pretty much it, trance addict ever since
Anyway that's about all I can think of saying for now except I'm so glad I got out of that bullshit rock scene. If any of you people have got sulky heavy metal non trancing mates, do them a favour one day, get them to a decent uplifting club even if you have to tie them up with gaffer tape and drag them in on their hands and knees, it's for their own good and they'll thank you for it one day 
I was into the rock shit too...how stupid I was. Anyway, I heard trance and did a complete 180 and have been listening to trance and other types of electronica ever since. I found I was seriously more happy when I started listening to trance. The problem with most rock music is that its all so depressing...trance is so happy and thats why its better, plus it has more substance, melody, everything.

personally, i hate rock (in fact, i like country better ...but i agree its wrong to just get on the people who listen to it. i shold kinda be thankful for rock though, the first trak to get me into trance was a rmx of a rock song (ya, apoptygma berserk- kathys song (f. corsten rmx)).

i think he made valid points.
he's not being a knob like electronic haters, who bash the scene because they've never experienced it and they don't understand it.
he's not making blind generalisations, he's saying what he hated about a scene he used to be a part of.
that's different.
and i agree. to find a scene where people are there for the music, for their own experience, instead of just to belong to some group, is great.
but there are exceptions to every rule.
i have friends who live for rock, hardcore punk, all sorts of things - they get as much satisfaction out of it as i get out of electronic music. i'm not about to tell them their scene and their music sucks.
rock music never moved me in any way - then i heard electronic music, and suddenly i found emotions in music.

I agree his points were totally valid, he didnt have to go into a long tuturial on what he likes about Trance. He just pointed out what he disliked in the scene that he used to love, and why this is so much better. Cheers to you. I agree

I used to be soooooo much into punk and hardcore metal and I loved it.
I still do love it but I also love trance. I have noticed that when I started listening to Trance my collection of cd's grew larger and more diverse with every day. I started listening to oldies, country, alternative and many more types of music. I haven't changed my attitude towards my pre-Trance music like some of you have because I am a musician. I play the saxaphone. And I feel that every type of music has emotion in it, You just gotta look in the right places to find it. Look at all those songs that u find depressing. Now think about the story behind those songs and if u try and tell me there are no emotions in it than u seriously need to re-evaluate your view on life. Music Stems from Emotions and Morals, and you just gotta listen to it to figure it out.

great point electric_hybrid... I tend to agree with you even though I am no musician. Electronic and rock are two very different kinds of music. Both do contain emotion. Rock may get depressing but that is a reflection in the feelings of the artist at the time. Sometimes I wish I could just pick up an instrument and play my sorrows away. My problem with rock is that it is a stagnant art. It doesnt change and hasnt since elvis and hendrix. Where is the innovation and creativity? Anyway point being its all a matter of taste.

I used to be a headbanger myself, I loved punk and metal, then I switched to electronica, techno was first (waaay back in 1994) and then moved to now when my preference goes to dark progressive but I love all electronica. The attitude of the rock scene is completely opposite to the electronica; yes I agree, that the music and the mosh pit and stuff IMHO suck? yes, but I wouldn't say that rock sucks, It's just another thing, another attitude, we cannot judge, we just changed to another line that's it.

I'm sorry, I didn't take the effort to read this whole thread. Just wanted to say: rock doesn't suck, neither does trance. It's just music, only a little bit different...
a couple of years ago(i think it was 1995), there was this compilation in Australia called "Techno sucks," it was advertised on TV and the cd involved heavy metal/rock and all that jimbo jumbo, though it didnt take offence to me, coz i was too young too like techno or trance back then. The narrator repetively kept on saying "techno sucks." I can't believe the code of conduct for adevertising/commericials allowed to insult a genre like that...
Techno or whatever electronica hasnt made any insult like that...
I just wish someday there's gonna be a compilation called "Heavy Metal sucks" filled with heaps of Gabber and hard trance.....or whatever......

Remembering this cd now, I feel anger towards rock,I just wanna find the narrator and shove a glow stick up his ass...lol
I've totally lost my respect for rock, it doesnt deserve to be a genre, if it uses these fucked up advertising techniques which disses are other genres.

personally i am 1 of the few ppl here who still enjoys a bit of rock..i view bands like silverchair as quality. nothing on trance..dont get me wrong but i like some rock..some is dreadful 2 tho..but i am getting a fairly large taste in music recently..i even like classical
