Best Shooter Ever...
I'm not talking like Socom or Half-Life or anything. I mean vertical or side-scrolling, balls to the wall style shooters. X-Multiply's sig got me thinking about it.
My favorite all time has to be Raidiant Silvergun on the Saturn. That shit was badass. I played it so much. It was the only game I ever mastered. I was able to get through the first few levels without dying once. And those of you who've played it know how huge of a feat that is! There was so much shit going on at one time... man. I wish I wasn't strapped for cash back in the day cause I sold it. (It goes for over $100 on Ebay regularly). This is the prequel to Ikaruga, for those that played that.
As of right now though, I whipped out my DC and have been playing GigaWing 2. Another badass shooter. Not as crazy as RS, but damn near close. And those insanely high scores make you feel like the master of the world! (As you can tell by my choices, I favor the vertical ones over the side scrollers.)
Well, what is your favorite?
Original Contra for NES.

Nemesis 2 (aka Gradius) and Salamander (aka Life Force) on the MSX. Those two arcade games were ported on most systems at that time, but the MSX got unique versions that didn't ressemble the arcade (new options, unique levels, difficulty notched up a lot). I know there was a remake of Nemesis 2 MSX on the Sharp X68000 (Nemesis '90 Kai) with better graphics, but I never had the chance to play it. For most of you guys that grew up with great graphics, those games won't probably appeal to you.
Difficulty was really high, but it was fun.
Nemesis : you had to fight your way through 8 way hard levels, and then when you defeat the "final" boss, you get a message that your home planet is attacked. So you had to fight your way backwards through all those levels again, finally to reach level 0 and end the game (of course with lot's more ennemies than the first pass).
Salamander : unlike the arcade/console versions, you had to choose a flight path after some levels. When viewing the info of the different levels, you could see the ennemy occupation amount of that level. If you chose to fight a level, the ennemy occupation of the other levels would rise for the next choice. You were pretty much forced to take on the most occupied levels first, otherwise they were almost impossible later on. Most Salamander MSX players agree that you need to finish the game in one pass. If you happen to die once, you cannot level up enough anymore to carry on succesfully. To make it even more annoying, once you "finished" the game, you were treated to a bad ending. You were told that you could only see the real ending if you had Nemesis 2 inserted in the second cartridge slot (really, it pisses you off to see that after you battled so hard the first time!).
Salamander was also one of the first shooters I know where simultaneous two player games where possible. And if you were good enough, there were special 2-player bonusses (one weapon where the two ships combined, with player one controlling the ship, the second player controlling the shooting).
One of the most memorable levels : navigating through a mechanical stage, frantically avoiding to crash on the scenery. Suddenly all the light goes out, and you're forced to look at where your bullets stop to find out where there is scenery.
For me, this is a tough call since shooters are a huge part of my life and have been for many, many years. Just the other day actually, I asked myself if I had to spend eternity and had only one single choice of a shooter to play, what would it be? My answer is
Gradius Gaiden Only released in Japan on the Playstation, it is a masterpiece. Now this is not to say Gradius V will not dethrone my choice! As you can tell by my sig, I can't wait to get my hands on my copy that is due out in September here in the US.
Other shooters that come very, very close as being my top favorite are, like Shamez214 said, Radiant Silvergun and also its sequel, Ikaruga. Both are amazing IMO.
I could go on for pages about shooters so I'll just stop now.
A great site for shooters or "shmups" as they are called is

Their forums are very active and you can find a lot of info on any shooters both old and new.

Hey Shamez214 since you have a Dreamcast and like shooters, there have been some new Japanese ones that have come out in recent months. The Dreamcast is still going strong in this department. Check these out:
Border Down
PsyVariar 2
Castle of Shikigami 2
Also an oldie but one of the best shooters on the Dreamcast if you haven't checked out is Zero Gunner 2

FPS games ARE 'shooters' aswell, but from a different perspective to vertical or horizontal scrolling. They also work in three dimensions instead of two. |
