DJ's walking off stage in the middle of a set!? WTF
Has anyone experienced a DJ just walking off in the middle of a set? This past weekend I went to see Yoji Biomehanika spin at Tokyo's Velfarre for his CD release. Lab4 was there and worked a bangin set, then Yoji steps up. He plays for about an hour or so when all of a sudden he starts pointing angrily
to one of his monitor speakers. After a few minutes of this he just pushes the speaker over, flips off the record, and walks out. At first I thought this might have been an act but then i see a bunch of sound guys run on the stage to try and fix the problem. After about 10 minutes of NO MUSIC, Yoji comes back out, he goes for about another 30mins and again points to the speakers, and again he walks off for about 5mins. Finally, he comes back out and finshes the last hour and half, but you can visably tell he is pissed and just going thru the motions. At exactly the time the show was to finish, he puts on a loop and walks straight out.
Anybody have something similiar happen to them??
No
I havnt had the chance to see anything live (age reasons) But i have heard many similar cases to that.
These big name djs get way too stuck up. They are djs, dont they remember thier early days, when they had to spin on whatever crappy equipment the club had for them? Dont the understand that they are there to entertain?
I understand that sometimes technical difficulties can make it almost impossible to perform, but they should really try thier best. In yojis case it sounds like ONE of his moniters was acting up. Not a huge deal... use the other moniter, or mix all in the phones... You might not be able to perform AS well, but you should still be able to play tunes, and beatmatch them reasonably well until the problem is fixed.
If the mixer has split cue, he shouldnt have even bothered bitching.
tiesto once walked off stage for about ten minutes & left a really shit loop track on, during the time he was off there was loads of sound guys trying to fix whatever problem he had pointed out... he still never looked to0 happy & couldnt mix all the way through the rest of his really crap set... kept pointing to the monitors
but the djs before & after him had absolutely no problems
doesn't sasha do this often

he has a few times.
the only reason people think that is because when sasha 'walks off' there is an amusing story behind it...
there are two such instances - both are really weird freaky things that could never happen again
its pretty unfair to say that he 'always' does it.

Originally posted by trancebrat Paul Oakenfold was a huge disappointment. Granted, I really didn't expect him to go off because he didn't the last two times that I saw him, but I sure as hell didn't expect the man to walk off the stage in the middle of his set. WTF? Yes, he did have a good set, but honestly...I have heard better sets than that. He was all over the place. His mixes weren't clean and they didn't flow as well as you would expect from a big name. He spun trance, house, breaks, progressive. I understand that he was a little annoyed in the beginning because of the sound issue (feedback from the mic) but that got fixed and he had 2 1/2 hours after that to come back. He started to build once and it came back down. Then he did it again and after Naked Angel I really thought the man was just going to go off. We were all anticipating it. Nothing. He exited the stage. He was done. For those of you that don't think it was a big deal...would it help to know that he was brought in there to spin from 12am - 3am and gave no indication whatsoever that he was going to end early? He basically told the guys on the stage that he wasn't into it and that he was "done" spinning. What? That place was packed wall to wall...with every hand in the air...on a freakin Tuesday night. That place was a madhouse and the vibe was insane. Never mind that this is days before WMC and was right after two big shows (Sasha & DJ Santana). Is he crazy? He started to build up with phat ass trance and then excused himself to a side room to go hang out with some groupies. Sorry if I sound bitter, but I honestly feel like he disrespected the AMP and our town. He could have at least made up an excuse or said something to us. You don't just stop spinning at 2:15am when the club closes at 3am and let some breaks DJ from NY come on to finish your set. Liquid Todd seemed like a nice guy, but what was with the old school disco breaks? Horrible ending. He cleared the dance floor and killed the club. The vibe in the club diminished within 5 minutes. You could feel it and you could see it.

Originally posted by mrmorden He did a 2 hour set alright... came on at 12:15am and played until 2:15. Only problem, the club didn't close until 3, so he just up and quit after two hours and let K-Todd (or whatever the hell his name is - all I know is that he killed the crowd) close out. Unheard of! I have never been to a show where the headliner didn't close out. Tiesto, Ferry, PvD, Sasha - all of them have blown up the room right until they raised the house lights. The hell of it is, up til now I was a big Oakenfold fan. He was the first trance DJ I ever heard. I've enjoyed his music selection over the years, and it wasn't like he didn't have a good set at the Amp (anyone got a track list?). He spun some stuff that had the crowd going nuts. But to just say "ok, 2 hours, I'm done"...? Inexcusable. I lost a good bit of respect for him last night. And if I were the club owner, I doubt I'd ever invite him back. MrMorden
thankyou.

Originally posted by trancebrat I went to a gig once where Sasha refused to get off the decks. We were standing on the stage with him and he adamently refused to quit spinning. They argued that they didn't have extra money to pay for the time and he laughed at them. He said "look out there...do you see that?! Those people are going insane. I would have to be crazy to stop now. I'm not crazy." It was weird. They kept explaining about needing to close for the employees and the police and he said "then you tell all of those people that they need to leave...that you are making me stop". They stood and stared at least 1000 people screaming and dancing and said "it's your show man...spin as long as you want". Funny shit. Sasha completely took control of that situation. Some people might think he was being a dick, but I don't. He gave the people a show. He spun for almost 6 hours and to this day it is one of the sickest sets I have ever heard.
i imagine that a large dose of high grade cocaine got into sasha that night.
