I bought the BT single Flaming June, just for the slow, orchestral version. And what do I discover? It's not on this CD. The tracklist is:

Flaming June (BT&PvD)
Orbitus Teranium
Orbitus Teranium (Lenco shift mix)

OH well, at least I didn't pay more than 50 cents for it.

There's a CD single with the version you're looking for. You got CD1 I reckon... CD2 is this:

I don't get why they split up singles into 2 discs like this... sooo inefficient... I know it has to do with legal running time of 20 min. in some countries to chart, but bleh. Maxi all the way! LOL.

Flaming June got even 2 sets of 2 CD singles, the first set already mentioned and later on 2 singles including remixes by Chicane and BBE. The later set had longer CDs tho, both about 30mins.


We can blame mostly UK and the The Official UK Charts Company, previously known as Chart Information Network (CIN) for this stupidest rule of all stupid rules. Here's a longish description about the rules of singles:

Besides other things like packaging and minimum dealer price, the rules set a limit of how long a single has to be in maximum to be considered for the single charts.

.. ~1997
- Before 1998 it was allowed to include up to 4 different songs (with "B-sides") up to 25 minutes, and to put a maximum of 40 minutes playing time on one format if it only contained remixes of the title track.
- That's why for example The Orb released a single "Blue Room" which was exactly 39:59 long, or that's why The Pet Shop Boys and many many other artists used to release two-part CD-singles around this time, one with "B-sides" less than 20/25 minutes, and one with remixes up to 40 minutes.

~1998 .. ~2003
- Maximum of 20 minutes playing time for each single format (since spring 2001 multimedia content seems to count)
- Maximum of 3 different tracks for each single format (since spring 2001 it seems to be allowed to include more than 3 versions of the featured track)
- Each format must contain a version of the featured song
- A maximum of 3 different formats of each title are allowed
- A 'format' is for example 7", 10", 12", cassette, CD, Enhanced CD. If there are different editions of one media like CD#1/CD#2 or 12"-Part1/Part2, each edition is counted as one format
- So most dancefloor labels are releasing a 2-part 12" with usually 4 mixes and a CD single with 3 (mostly mutilated and shortened) mixes of a song including a radio edit.

~2004 ..
- Two new formats have been introduced
- The 2-track CD single:
>>> Two audio tracks only
>>> No more than 10 minutes in total
>>> Standardized singles jewel case packaging, no free gifts or extras, lower minimum dealer price
- The Maxi CD (also DVD):
>>> Current maximum of 3 tracks will in addition be able to feature remixes of those tracks so long as they remain within the currently-acknowledged time limit of 20 minutes
>>> Singles which solely feature a lead track plus multiple remixes of the same track will be able to run for up to 40 minutes
>>> The current limit of one video will increase to two
>>> Singles will, for the first time, be able to feature weblinks with an extension of the rule which currently allows them on albums
>>> Labels wishing to release a single that complies with the new rules should be aware that sales of a maximum of one 2-track CD, one Maxi CD and one DVD may be combined per release for Chart purposes.

You know what confuses me even more... different laws for charting in different countries... gah...

The minute limit works against dance music, esp. those extended club mixes.

One of the funniest things i've seen againts the "CIN rules" relate to Humate - 3.1 1998 CDM released on Platipus back in late '98. Humate and the Platipus crew together decided to put a message to the CIN authorities on the inlay of the CD which says:

"The Chart Information Network (C.I.N) have changed the rules so that 'You' the Punter, can no longer purchase a single with more than 3 mixes on it. That's why we have made this CD single with 7 mixes on it, the way it should be - 'Value for your money'. For anyone from C.I.N. that reads this, F**k your rules!"

The CDM was about 54mins instead of the poor 20.

HAHAHA. Great stuff. That's quite a tale, and I agree with that.

Common sense and a service to the fans rule above these dumb, impractical textbook laws! I have no common sense and even I can appreciate this. My gosh.

This reminds me obliquely of Autechre's Anti EP, which was designed to counter the Criminal Justice Bill of the time that was opposed to REPETITIVE BEATS. Guh! :P

As per an old AE FAQ:

2.09 What's the deal with their 'Anti EP'?

In 1994, Autechre released an ep which was meant as a protest against the 'Criminal Justice Bill' which outlawed gatherings of people were the music displayed repetitive beats. The first two tracks of this ep contain repetetive beats, while the last track contains non-repetetive beats.

Oh yes i remember the Anti EP. Another release against some stupid rules.
