Of all the ways to go

Three killed in septic tank mishap
Three men overcome by fumes

ST-JEAN-BAPTISTE-DE-ROUVILLE, Que. (CP) Three people are dead and one person is in critical condition after falling into a septic tank at a campground early Saturday morning.

Around midnight, the 56-year-old owner of the Lac du Repos campground entered a hole in the ground with his son-in-law, 27, in order to clear a blocked drain, said Quebec provincial police.

However, the owner and his son-in-law were overcome by fumes and fell 4 metres into the septic tank below.

A 38-year-old camper tried to save them but was also overpowered by the fumes and died.

A fourth man was injured trying to save them and is in critical condition

St-Jean-Baptiste-de-Rouville is about 30 kilometres east of Montreal.

I almost want to vomit reading that.

i guess people don't realize that there is no oxygen there. the methane pushes out all the air.

StereoPrincess is right, the bacteria that causes the decomposition of this sort needs oxygen. The byproduct of course is methane which if in high enough concentrations, can be poisonous. These people obviously suffocated...

On a side note, this is growing problem of landfill sites. Since more garbage is piled on, the waste at the bottom receives no oxygen and can't decompose. There have been reports that they've found newspapers from the 1920's in relatively good shape despite being found in a dump.

Yea =\. Though, human natural selection (the stupid people that decide to go in a septic tank... And of course the Darwin awards) does have a way of working itself out. (mean by true)
