Cool Cartridges

Do you think I should get stanton groovemasters or orfoton concordes. I think there's nothing between them and they look virtually identical, and have similar specs.
Opinions please

Thanx
Luke

<-------------------Ortofon's

Cool

which orfotons, the blue 1s?

Posted by Evoke on Sep-28-2001 16:52:

Not the blue they dont worth the price. Take the scratch (red) or Nightclub-S (Black/Yellow). I have these for 6 years now and no problems, never changed. These are the best.

Buy the Ortofon Concorde Pro's, ya know the black ones, and just upgrade the tips. All Ortofons are the same, the only difference are the quality of the tips and the paintjob ortofon gives the carts. No point in buying the expensive ones off hand. But you cant beat the sound quality of Ortofons. Fu@king love 'em!!

Looks like the consensus is to get the ortofons.

An alternative to the concordes would be getting the OM version, it's the exact same thing except it attaches to the headshell, they are also cheaper.

How many times has dj liquid pointed to his orfotons!!! but yea i like the stanton ones, but i don't think i could go for them when the quality and sound of the orfotons are there

I'm currently using the needles that came with my Technics set and been using them for a few months now. These are Stanton 500AL II. Someone I spoke to recommend me to save up my money and upgrade them to ortonfon ASAP as these needles actually burn rcords.. Is that true? If yes I've got my eyes set on the Ortofon pro Silver .. they're real beauty. costs almost 90 quids for a pair. What do you all reckon?

just get them, they are gr8

Posted by DJTJ on Oct-16-2001 13:48:

Don't get them, they're not gr8.

They are identical in every way to the standard Concorde Pro (i.e. the black ones), they've just been given a nicer paint job, and hence they can get away with charging twice as much for them.

My advice would be to buy the black version, and buy replacement styli for Nighclub E or something high-end like that. All ortofon carts are identical apart from colour, it's the styli that are different.

apparently the stylus specs are right like the blue ones, but a better lower frequency pickup, i think they are okay if you are just starting or upgrading to orfotons, as all the sound quality is good, spherical ones wear out vinyl quicker than elliptical ones though.

Posted by DJTJ on Oct-17-2001 10:07:

But like I said, all the carts (not the stys) are identical, so why not just buy the black pro carts (cheapest) and buy some Nightclub E (top of the range, elliptical) styli?

Posted by Narcissus on Oct-17-2001 11:34:

Well,
I just checked the prices at HTFR. The concorde pro cartridges costs 45 quids each and the silver costs 50 quids each. Both of these comes with their stylus. Apparently you can get the pair of silver ones for 89 quids! I don't understand why you said the black ones cost half the pice? I might be looking up the wrong one as I'm not at all experienced with this stuffs. More guide into this will be appreciated. Cheers.

ps:- what are the nightclub E stylus anyway? Can't find any in the page.. and how long would these styli last for? I'm willing to pay a little higher as if it would be a one time investment but doesn't neccessary have t be some luxury needles... just something for the bedroom that will be good to my records..

Posted by DJTJ on Oct-18-2001 09:48:

Well, maybe not twice as much, but you know what I mean

But seriously though, the silver ones and the black ones are identical apart from the colour.

The Nightclub E are available from www.directdistributionsales.com and are priced at 143.24 per pair. This is compared to the 90 for two Pro versions. However, you can pay your 90 for the pro's, and then buy your Nightclub E replacement styli from the above site for 81.78 equalling 171.78. This means you have a spare set of pro styli that only cost you 28 that you can use for maybe practising at home, or learning to scratch with so you don't destroy your Nightclubs for when you play out or something.

And to boy_luke_2k, I have the black pro's, and on the spec sheet inside the box it gives you the specs for both the black pro's and the silver pro's, and they are identical. Check the ortofon website ( www.ortofon.com ) and it gives you all the specs for their styli on there.

Thumbs up

I go along with DJTJ, about buying the more inexpensive carts and hittin up the nightclub stylii. I personally have trackmasterII's and they do just fine for what i do (frat/houseparties) but if your lookin' for top of the line shizzle...do the cheaper carts, and more expensive stylii.

Smiley DJ DIFFERENT TYPES OF BLACK ORTOFONS

Hey Narcissus
There are different *3 i believe* types of the black concorde cartridges. There are pro's...pro S ...and pro SS i believe...dont hold me to it, but check around!

Posted by DJTJ on Oct-19-2001 16:57:

I would be very surprised if there are 3 types. The "S" just stands for spherical, and obviously "E" stands for elliptical, and as far as I'm aware the pro's only come in spherical anyway. I think the full title of them is Pro S, some people don't bother putting the S on because they're all spherical anyway. Perhaps there is a Pro SS or something, denoting the Silver edition, but that's a guess.
