Summer 2004

I've got to say, so far this has been the least impressive summer season for trance in my memory. No real anthems, no groundbreaking shifts in style. Ah well, you win some, you lose some. Opinions?

I agree, there hasnt been a release in the past 2 months that warranted me purchasing, my gf has started to buy breaks instead

So very true. It's been quantity over quality lately... there's so many tunes released every week that it's not even funny. And they all sound the same.

To look on the bright side, it's given my wallet a break.

If only... Lately my money has been going on the re-releases of tunes I never got the first time around... and no, I don't mean the useless 2004 updates.

It's been better than 2003, I know that, but down on 2002 and before.

I'm sure I remember loads of big trance tunes around this time last year. 2002 was the worst imho.

I wonder what the next breakthrough trance style will sound like.Hopefully it has nothing to do with tiesto.

I'm in agreeance with Mr.Mystery, all the new trance tracks are becomming pretty repetative.

Posted by isoterra on Aug-29-2004 17:19:

Saying that though, people have been saying 'trance is getting worse/boring/repetitive/formulaic/etc' since 1999. It's a dirge, it's nothing new.

I don't think its boring, and its definetly not worse. But it just fails to maintain the feeling that it did in earlier days. For me anyway.

Nah, 2003 was better than 2002. There was As The Rush Comes, Beautiful Things, Traffic, Crush, Right of Way, Holding On To Nothing, New Time New Place, Symbols, 3rd Earth, Time of our Lives, etc. It was a decent year.

Nowhere close to this year. 2002 had all the classic remixes that were, you know, actually good (Cafe del Mar, Janeiro), plus Solarcoaster, Southern Sun, Silverbath, Nothing, Summer Calling, Carrera 2, Mindcircus, etc.

What does this year have? The Age of Love remixes, Randy Kantana - In Silence (Txitxarro Remix), Phantom Manor, Adagio For Strings, a bunch of bland McProg, and some half-assed remakes of Synesthesia? Woo, great showing.

Oh, sorry, I forgot Search For Freedom, White Room, Satellite, and Sahara. Silly me.

I'll agree it hasn't been great so far, I was more defending 2003 since that's probably been my favourite year for trance overall, just topping '99.

Can't really comment on 2004 as a whole yet since there's still 4 months to go.

The fact is "classics" are going to be very few and far between. And when they are made because they are so rare it will get cained and everyone will be sick of it, e.g As The Rush Comes.

I dont think the quality of trance being produced is worse, theres nuthing that just stands out and hit u in the face like it used to

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Aug-29-2004 19:03:

I thought 2003 was terrible.

Posted by Floorfiller on Aug-29-2004 19:11:

funny this thread should come up hehehe...i was just thinking this the other day.

Posted by idoru on Aug-29-2004 19:16:

So far this year I haven't been impressed too much. So many tunes are over-rated to sin and so many come out that are just "meh."

Posted by tranceaholic on Aug-29-2004 19:28:

yes..i have been listening to way less trance..been listening to funky house ala lola's theme and some dark prog house not even prog trance...its all about house right now for me..

Posted by djshan on Aug-29-2004 21:06:

to be honest with everyone, i enjoy trance more in the winter and less in the summer, i dont knwo why. i guess its the weather.

Posted by Frase on Aug-29-2004 22:01:

I'm loving the trance out at the moment

Posted by A.J. on Aug-29-2004 23:16:

Well i have to agree with you that there haven't been too many stand-out songs released this year.

Leama & Moor, Probspot & Nu Nrg have had the standout tracks of the year for me.

Also a couple more:
Sarah Mclachlan - World On Fire (Junkie XL Mix)
BT - Force Of Gravity (Ferry Corsten Mix)
Flash Brothers - Amen
Mark Norman - Phantom Manor

Posted by Floorfiller on Aug-30-2004 00:03:

i think another thing is the timing of tracks being made public. i mean...

Filterheadz - Yimanya

had the potential to be a huge summer tune, but i think the filterheadz got it out there a little too soon. if they would have sat on it a little longer instead of having it being played out back in january it would've been better...

Posted by djshan on Aug-30-2004 00:21:

everyone just listen to "clear blue water" and i guarantee you will be bak into it.

Posted by pblyman on Aug-30-2004 00:54:

I disagree... i have found many good tunes.. but it is definitely a job... YOu just have to keep looking.. I am happy with this summer... and surprisingly.. I found some nice epic/uplifting shit too!!! You have to go to every forum you can find...
